India beat West Indies by 105 runs in Women’s World Cup 2013 #wwc13 #IndvsWI

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 09:02 AM PST

India beat West Indies by 105 runs in Women's World Cup 2013India rode on opener Thirush Kamini Murugesan’s maiden century to thrash West Indies by 105 runs in their opening Group A match of the ICC Women’s World Cup here on Thursday.

Kamini scored 100 off 146 balls to become the first Indian eve to notch up a century in 50-over World Cup as the hosts piled up a commendable 284 for six after being sent into bat.

Defending the total, Nagarajan Niranjana (3/52), Jhulan Goswami (2/13) and left-arm spinner Gouher Sultana (2/38) starred with the ball to help India bundle out the Caribbean side for 179 runs with 5.3 overs to spare.

West Indies run chase never really got off as they lost wickets at regular intervals. Opener Kycia Knight, one of the twin sister in the team, was dismissed in the second ball of the innings after she was run out by a direct hit from Harmanpreet Kaur.

West Indies then other opener Stafanie Taylor in the first ball of the sixth over after she edged one to wicket-keeper Karuna Jain off Amita Sharma’s bowling.

Niranjana then castled the timbers of Shemaine Campbelle with an in swinger to reduce the West Indies to 38 for three.

Deandra Dottin then took the attack to the opposition with a 16-ball 39-run blitzkrieg which was studded with four sixes and three fours.

The 21-year old West Indian clobbered Niranjana for two sixes and a four in the 19th over before the pacer took her revenge by trapping Dottin plumb in front of the wicket in the same over.

Kyshona Knight (11) was then bowled by Sultana in the next over as West Indies lost half of the side back with just 84 runs on the board.

West Indies skipper Merissa Aguilleira shared a 49-run stand for the sixth wicket with Shanel Daley before she was caught at covers by Indian skipper Mithali Raj off Nilanjana.

From there on, victory was just a formality for India and Goswami ensured a quick end to the match by picking up two wickets in the later stages of West Indies’ innings.

Earlier, Kamini etched her name record books and together with Poonam Raut (72) shared 175 runs for the opening wicket to lay the foundation for India’s total.

Before Kamini, the previous best by an Indian eve in a World Cup was by skipper Mithali Raj who socred 91 against the Netherlands in the 2005 edition, while this was the highest team total posted by the side.

India surpssed their previous highest score of 275 against the Netherlands in the 2000 World Cup in New Zealand.

Left-hander Kamini, who made a comeback into the side, scored 100 in 146 balls was finally run-out. She struck 11 fours and a six and batted till the 43rd over and spent 156 minutes at the crease.

Put into bat, Kamini and Poonam Raut (72) made best use of the flat track at Brabourne Stadium here.

Raut’s 72 runs came off 94 balls and she struck seven fours during her 144-minute stay at the crease.

Raut was finally out leg before trying a sweep shot off spinner Shanel Daley. India tried to accelerate and made best use of the Powerplay as 45 runs came off those five overs.

She was joined by former Indian skipper Jhulan Goswami, who was promoted as a pinch hitter and Goswami made a quickfire 36 in 21 balls.

India started losing wickets towards the end in their bid to step up the ante.

For the visitors, seamer Deandra Dottin picked up three wickets in her four overs while giving away 32 runs, and Daley picked up one.

India will whitewash Australia 4-0, says Harbhajan Singh #IndvsAus

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 07:30 AM PST

India will whitewash Australia 4-0, says Harbhajan SinghSenior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh, who has had some memorable performances against Australia in the past, on Thursday started the game of one-upmanship by declaring that India will thrash Michael Clarke’s men 4-0 in the upcoming Test series, starting February 22.

“This is a young Australian team. They are even getting beaten on their home grounds consistenly. We should defeat them easily and 4-0 whitewash is a real possibility,” Harbhajan said on the sidelines of a promotional event on Thursday.

Bhajji, who has been selected to play for the Rest of India squad in the Irani trophy is optimistic about his chances of selection in the upcoming Australian series.

“I have bowled a number of overs in the Ranji series and am feeling good about my rhythm. I am trying to utilise whatever opportunities of match practice that I am able to get. I am hopeful that I will make the cut for the Australia Test series.”

Comparing with the past Australian teams with the present batch, Harbhajan opined that Steve Waugh and Ricky Ponting’s units had players who were matchwinners in their own rights.

“They had 11 champion players. Right from Justin Langer, Matthew Hayden to Adam Gilchrist, Shane Warne, McGrath, they were unbeatable as a unit.”

Harbhajan feels that the recently-retired Ricky Ponting, with whom he had been involved in numerous on-field battles in the past, will be missed by the current inexperienced Aussies.

“Ponting was a class act. It will be difficult for Australians to replace him,” he said.

Talking about the recently concluded India-England series where England thumped India with a 2-1 margin in the Tests, the offie feels that blaming the pitches for team’s poor performance is not the correct way to move forward.

“We should not always blame the pitch for our bad perormance. The England team played better cricket overall, they played our spinners better, their spinners bowled better than us,” he said.

Harbhajan, who was the captain of the Punjab team which made it to the Ranji Trophy semi-finals this year feels that although the pitches were better for seamers this season, yet they wasn’t much help for the spinners.

“Seamers on first day tracks got wickets but as the matches progressed, even on day three and four, due to green-tops, the ball wasn’t gripping onto the surface. Such pitches do not give the spinners any advantage and even on the last day, they struggled to get wickets. In the end, it became easier for batsmen only,” he said.

Harbhajan, who recently relinquished the captainship of the Mumbai Indians franchisee in the Indian Premier League, felt that being a captain was taking a lot out of him and he was not able to give his very best for the team.

“Being a captain is an added responsibility and it took a lot out of me. At present, I just wanted to focus on my game, and hence I decided to give someone else a chance. I wish all the luck to the next skipper,” he said.

Preview Australia vs West Indies, 1st ODI, Perth, 2013Australia will be looking to put a run of indifferent limited-overs performances against Sri Lanka behind them when their five-match ODI series against West Indies begins in Perth on Friday.

West Indies are coming in the series after a break of almost two months following the tour of Bangladesh. After a 2-2 ODI series and being blanked in the two Twenty20 internationals against Sri Lanka, Australia will be hoping to salvage something from what has been a largely disappointing summer.

Skipper Michael Clarke is expected to return after recovering from the ankle sprain. He looked in fine form against Sri Lanka until the injury. With David Warner out of the squad after suffering a minor thumb fracture in the nets this week, Aaron Finch will partner Phil Hughes at the top of the order.

Australia will be aiming to dominate the West Indies in the upcoming five-match one-day series.

Usman Khawaja has once again been drafted into the squad and will likely bat at No. 3 while allrounder James Faulkner looks primed to make his ODI debut after replacing the injured Moises Henriques in the squad. Matthew Wade and George Bailey will be looking to play crucial roles in the middle order. In the bowling department, Mitchell Johnson will lead the pace attack and be accompanied by Clint McKay and Mitchell Starc with Faulkner also relied on to bowl.

On the other hand, West Indies’ campaign has not been helped by injury to Marlon Samuels and Chris Gayle’s lack of form. The former captain Ramnaresh Sarwan returns after a lengthy absence and is set to play his first international match since June 2011. Gayle and Kieron Pollard’s participation in the Big Bash League has also increased the team’s chances of success in Australia, and coach Ottis Gibson and skipper Darren Sammy will heavily rely on their top order.

Tino Best and Andre Russell will share the new ball for the visitors followed by Sammy and Dwayne Bravo. As always, ace spinner Sunil Narine will surely be key for West Indies.

Probable XIs
Australia: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 Phillip Hughes, 3 Usman Khawaja, 4 Michael Clarke (capt), 5 George Bailey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 James Faulkner, 9 Mitchell Johnson, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Mitchell Starc.

West Indies: 1 1 Chris Gayle, 2 Kieron Powell, 3 Ramnaresh Sarwan, 4 Darren Bravo, 5 Dwayne Bravo, 6 Kieron Pollard, 7 Andre Russell, 8 Darren Sammy (capt), 9 Devon Thomas (wk), 10 Tino Best, 11 Sunil Narine.

Preview Pakistan vs Australia, 3rd Match, Women's World Cup 2013Forced out of their original base due to security concerns, Pakistan will have to keep off-field issues in the backburner to put up an inspired performance against formidable Australia in their opening Group B match of the ICC Women’s World Cup at Cuttack on Friday.

Pakistan had to deal with unwarranted tensions even before their arrival here after some political parties asked the organisers not to allow them to participate in the event in the wake of the recent tensions at the Line of Control.

The entire squad is staying in the club house of the Barabati stadium here after right-wing groups reportedly threatened hoteliers in the twin cities of Bhubaneswar and Cuttack not to house the Pakistani players.

Cuttack was added as a last-minute venue after the Shiv Sena threatened to disrupt Pakistan’s matches in Mumbai, where the entire eight-nation tournament was originally scheduled to be played.

But keeping the off-field matters behind, the Sana Mir-led Pakistani side would be hoping the sub-continental conditions would suit her team of talented bowlers, including spinner Nida Dar and uncapped medium-pacer Diana Baig.

The all-round skills of vice-captain Bismah Maroof will also prove important for the side if the team is to remain in the competition past the group stage.

But it won’t be easy for the Pakistanis against the 2012 Women’s World Twenty20 champions and five-time World Cup winners Australia, who are favourites to qualify for the Super Six stage from Group B.

Besides Australia, New Zealand, who lifted the trophy back in 2000 and were runner-up in the last Women’s World Cup in 2009, will also be front-runners to qualify for the Super Six stage of the event from this group.

Pakistan and South Africa qualified for the event after finishing second and fourth in the qualifiers staged in Dhaka last year.

Pakistan made the final of that event, losing to the West Indies in the final by 130 runs.

Of the Australia squad heading to India, led by Jodie Fields, two — Lisa Sthalekar and Alex Blackwell — have tasted World Cup glory, having featured in the 2005 team that lifted the trophy.

Besides Blackwell and Sthalekar, another member of the 2005 winning team is also with the side, Cathryn Fitzpatrick, who is now the head coach.

The youngest member of the team is 17-year-old Holly Ferling, while all-rounder Ellyse Perry and batting duo of Alyssa Healy and Jess Cameron were members of the recent ICC Women’s World Twenty20 winning side.

One player to watch out for is in-form batter, Meg Lanning, who recently scored the fastest century by an Australian player in an ODI. She smashed her way to a 45-ball 100 in 55 minutes against New Zealand in December last year.

Meanwhile, in another Group B match last year’s runners-up New Zealand will take on South Africa at the DRIEMS Ground in Cuttack.

Pakistan players ignored again ahead of IPL Season 6 auction #IPL6

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 05:44 AM PST

Pakistan players ignored again ahead of IPL Season 6 auctionConsidered pariahs by the Indian Premier League (IPL) since 2008, Pakistani cricketers were once again left out of the list of players to be auctioned for the event’s sixth edition in April-May.

The 101-strong list of players, to be auctioned on Sunday, does not feature a single Pakistani player despite the resumption of bilateral cricket ties between the two neighbours in December last year.

Pakistani players have been ignored by IPL since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Even though the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has been pushing for their inclusion, the efforts have not paid off even this year.

And it has got nothing to do with the recent tension that gripped the Line of Control earlier this month after an Indian soldier was beheaded during a violation of the ceasefire.

The move to keep Pakistani players out was initiated in December last year even though Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had hinted about having them for the auction at least.

The BCCI’s apprehension stemmed from the fear of controversies given that having sportspersons from across the border remains a sensitive matter in India.

“It is for the franchises to decide their teams. The franchises invest a lot of money and they do not want to take risk by including Pakistani players. The idea is to play it safe”, a top IPL official said.

Recently, Pakistani hockey players were sent back from the Hockey India League while the women cricketers from the country, who are here for the World Cup, were shifted from Mumbai to Cuttack following protests by the Shiv Sena.

Women’s World Cup 2013 : England vs Sri Lanka, 2nd Match – Preview #wwc13 #EngvsSL

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

England vs Sri Lanka, preview, women's world cup Mumbai 2013Firm favourites for the title, defending champions England have an easy opener to deal with when they take on tournament minnows Sri Lanka in a Group A match of the Women’s Cricket World Cup here tomorrow.

The three-time winners of the tournament, since its inception in 1973, and the World T20 runners-up are led by Charlotte Edwards, who is set to appear in her fifth successive Cup.

She led England to a four-wicket victory over Australia in the 2009 tournament final at Sydney.

England have a 100 per cent record against their rivals, considered outsiders in the race to the Super Six stage.

The two teams have met on eight occasions, including one washed-out match, and England have come out trumps seven times, making them clear front-runners.

The England squad features familiar faces. There are eight players from the original winning squad of 2009 including the in-form ICC Women’s Twenty20 Player of the Year Sarah Taylor, who will once again lead the side’s batting line-up.

Apart from Edwards, the most capped woman’s player in ODIs with 160 appearances including 86 as captain, England have a top wicket-keeper batter in Taylor.

Pacer Katherine Brunt, the number one bowler in the ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings with 76 scalps to her name, along with the talented slow left-armer Holly Colvin will be top bowlers for England.

They also have three other spinners in the squad — Danielle Hazel, Laura Marsh and Danni Wyatt.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, are looked upon as the team most likely to make an exit at the preliminary stage from this group that also has hosts India and the West Indies.

Captained by middle-order batter and off-spinner Sashikala Siriwardene, Sri Lanka have a mountain to climb against England — winners in 1973, 1993 and 2009 and runners-up in 1978, 1981 and 1988.

Lanka, who look upon former captain and all rounder Chamani Seneviratna to play a key role, had finished eighth in the last edition. They had ended up sixth in 2000, their best finish, and made the quarters three years earlier.

They won the right to compete in the tournament by finishing in the top four of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers held in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in November 2011.

Australia and South Africa players barred from Pakistan Super League #PSL #Pak

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 03:15 AM PST

Australia and South Africa players barred from Pakistan Super LeaguePakistan Super League has suffered a setback after Cricket Australia (CA) and Cricket South Africa (CSA) decided not to issue NOCs to their contracted players for the twenty20 tournament scheduled to be held in Lahore from March 26.

Geo News channel reported that Cricket Australia had made it clear with reference to a query that they wouldn’t be sending their contracted players to Pakistan because of the security situation.

“Due to the ongoing security concerns in Pakistan, Cricket Australia and the Australian Cricketers’ Association would not be supportive of any international or state contracted player participating in the Pakistan Super League,” a spokesman of Cricket Australia told the channel.

Australia is the only team not to have toured Pakistan since 1998 because of security situation. They last toured Pakistan when Mark Taylor was captain for a full series but in 2002 they backed out of a tour to Pakistan expressing security concerns because of the 9/11 incident.

Australia has subsequently compelled the Pakistan board to play its “home” series against the Aussies at neutral venues.

To make matters worse, a cricket website, Pakpassion.com also reported that it had received a statement from Cricket South Africa that it would not issue NOC’s to its players for the PSL.

The statement said that the security assessments did not provide the required level of comfort.

“The independent security reports will at this stage not allow CSA to provide a NOC for any player. CSA’s current agreement with SACA, our cricketers association, is that we will not send players to the PSL based on the security reports,” said.

The PCB already aware of the problems it will face in convincing other boards to send their players for the PSL has even offered a life insurance worth USD 2 million for players coming to Pakistan and tax free incomes from the league.

Few days back the International Federation of Cricketers, FICA had also advised its member players to stay away from the PSL.

An official of the board when asked about the development said so far they had received nothing from any board about not sending their players for the PSL.

“We are making strong efforts to convince boards that it is safe to play in Pakistan. Haroon Lorgat is also working in this area. Hopefully we will see positive results soon. For the moment we can’t comment on this situation,” he said.

Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting got top base price ahead of IPL 6 auctions #IPL6

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 02:30 AM PST

Michael Clarke and Ricky Ponting got top base price ahead of IPL 6 auctionsThey are not exactly Twenty20 stars but retired Australian skipper Ricky Ponting and his successor Michael Clarke have attracted the highest base price of USD 400,000 (approx Rs 2.1 crore) among the 101 names who will go under the hammer in the IPL players’ auction to be held on Sunday.

There are four marquee players in the list, the other two being South African all-rounder Johan Botha and out-of-favour Indian pacer RP Singh, whose base price has been pegged at USD 100,000 (Rs 53.3 lakh).

Singh was bought by Mumbai Indians last year for USD 600,000, but, after a dismal show of 10 wickets from 11 matches, he was released by the franchise.

While Clarke was previously with Pune Warriors India, Ponting played for Kolkata Knight Riders last season. Botha, on the other hand, has attracted a base price of USD 300,000 (Rs 1.6 crore).

The list includes seven Indians, two Englishmen and Irish all-rounder Kevin O’Brien.

Even though Clarke and Ponting have attracted the highest base price but their T20 credentials are not exactly exciting.

Clarke retired from the format a couple of years ago, while the 38-year-old Ponting did not quite click with his initial franchise Kolkata Knight Riders.

Darren Sammy, who captained the West Indies in their World Twenty20 Championships triumph last year, will be among the first-timers up for sale. His base price has been set at USD 100,000.

Among other international players, England’s Matt Prior and Ravi Bopara, both of whom went unsold last season, have a base price of USD 100,000 and USD 200,000 (Rs 1.06 crore).

The auction is expected to be a low-key affair owing to lack of star players in the list.

“Apart from filling in certain small gaps, I do not see any big action happening this time around. Also with the player contracts expiring after the 2013 season, it would be difficult to place your bets on any big buys,” a franchise official was quoted as saying by ESPNcricinfo.

No team will tour Pakistan under present circumstances : Shahid Afridi

Posted: 31 Jan 2013 02:05 AM PST

No team will tour Pakistan under present circumstances - Shahid AfridiFormer captain Shahid Afridi feels under current situation no international team will tour Pakistan and advised the PCB to stop trying to convince weak teams such as Bangladesh to play in their country.

Afridi said on Geo News TV that while he understood the honest efforts made by the board to somehow revive international cricket in Pakistan but felt running after teams like Bangladesh would serve no purpose.

“I don’t think teams will tour Pakistan in present circumstances. It is better if the board waits for the situation to improve in our country. When things improve all the teams will want to play in Pakistan it is a matter of time,” Afridi said.

The flamboyant all-rounder, who rejected a lucrative offer of around Rs 40 million to play in the Bangladesh Premier League, said he was not in favour of the board trying to convince teams like Bangladesh or other weaker sides to come to Pakistan.

“It is unfortunate the way Bangladesh reacted. But it is serving us no purpose. It only creates negativity. It is better if we just focus on our domestic cricket and the Super League is a step in the right direction,” he said.

He pointed out that Pakistan was one of the leading teams of the world and had shown that it can do well anywhere in the world, despite not playing at home since 2009.

“Our cricket is doing well and our team is performing well. So we shouldn’t be too worried about when teams will come to Pakistan it will happen eventually we just have wait patiently,” he said. .

Afridi said he would be playing against Afghanistan for the Pakistan A side next month.

“I might also play a four day match to get more practice to get back into proper form,” he said.

Indications are that the board will appoint Afridi to lead the Pakistan A side against Afghanistan with senior wicketkeeper, Kamran Akmal also getting a chance to play after being sidelined for the Test series in South Africa.

Afridi also said that the Test series that starts in South Africa would be a real test for the players.

“But I think it will be an engrossing and tough series because our test team is well balanced and capable of surprising anyone anywhere. But we have to play to our best against the world’s number one team,” he said.

Preview Pakistan vs South Africa, 1st Test, Johannesburg, 2013Pakistan will face top-ranked South Africa in the first Test at the Wanderers from Friday destabilised by the loss of rock-solid opener Taufeeq Umar.

The 31-year-old Umar, who has played 43 Tests and scored 2,943 runs, was pulled out of the tour after suffering a muscle injury in his shin.

Umar and regular partner Mohammad Hafeez had opened together in 18 consecutive Tests, a record for Pakistan, and the tourists were keen for the sequence to continue against South Africa’s formidable fast bowling attack on a pitch likely to offer pace and bounce.

With Umar out, Nasir Jamshed is expected to make his Test debut after scoring half-centuries in the warm-up game against a South African Invitation XI which ended in a draw at East London on Monday.

Pakistan’s batting could be the key to the three-match series after South Africa’s bowlers swept aside the challenge of New Zealand in two Test matches earlier this month.

In Dale Steyn and Veron Philander, South Africa have the two leading bowlers on the International Cricket Council rankings, while fellow fast bowler Morne Morkel is ranked eighth.

Off-spinner Saeed Ajmal, at number three, is the only Pakistan bowler in the top 10.

The middle order failed against the Invitation XI, with only captain Misbah-ul-Haq joining the openers in notching a half-century.

But if Pakistan can post respectable totals, they will be confident they have the bowling weaponry to test a strong South African batting line-up.

While Ajmal will be able to bowl long spells of spin, the experienced Umar Gul and the left-arm swing bowler Junaid Khan, together with the unknown factor of the 2.1 metre Mohammad Irfan, will provide a varied pace attack.

The teams last met in two high-scoring drawn matches in the United Arab Emirates in 2010.

Since then Pakistan have won nine of their 16 Test matches and lost only two — against the West Indies in Guyana in May 2011 and against Sri Lanka in Galle in June 2012.

South Africa, meanwhile, have built a formidable record as they have climbed to the number one place in the rankings, winning their most recent five series, including away encounters against England and Australia.

Philander and batsman Hashim Amla were both passed fit after missing recent matches but left-arm spinner Robin Peterson remained a doubtful starter after splitting the webbing between fingers on his right hand.

South Africa captain Graeme Smith will become the first man to lead in 100 Test matches, an event which has dominated the build-up to the match.

Teams:

South Africa (likely): Graeme Smith (Capt.), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers, Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Robin Peterson or Imran Tahir, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel.

Pakistan (from): Misbah-ul-Haq (Capt.), Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed, Azhar Ali, Younis Khan, Asad Shafiq, Sarfraz Ahmed, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan, Ehsan Adil, Adbur Rehman, Haris Sohail, Faisal Iqbal, Tanvir Ahmed, Rahat Ali, Imran Farhat.

“We have put in a lot of effort in the last four years,” says Jhulan Goswami. “We will try our best to do what our men’s team did two years ago.”

Pitch: The pitch has a smattering of grass, which may aid the seamers through the game. The boundaries have been pulled in a bit, but at 67 metres straight-on, it is comparable to some of the grounds used in certain T20 leagues. The team that wins the toss could be inclined to bowl first, says Sanjay Manjrekar.

Teams
India Women (Playing XI): Poonam Raut, Thirush Kamini, Mithali Raj(c), Harmanpreet Kaur, Reema Malhotra, Karu Jain(w), Nagarajan Niranjana, Amita Sharma, Jhulan Goswami, Gouher Sultana, Rasanara Parwin

South Africa need to draw Pakistan series to retain no. 1 spot in tests #PakvsSA

South Africa need to draw Pakistan series to retain no. 1 spot in testsIf the South Africa-Pakistan Test series is drawn level at 0-0, it would be enough for the Proteas to guarantee themselves the No 1 spot at the April 1 cut-off date for retaining the ICC Test Championship mace and prize money for the top-ranked team.

South Africa is currently placed at the top of the table with 124 ratings points, six ratings ahead of England.

South Africa would thus have an opportunity to not only become richer by USD 450,000 but also to retain the Reliance ICC Test Championship mace, irrespective of how the other series before the cut-off date pan out.

There are three more series lined up before the April 1 cut-off date. India hosts Australia for a four-match series from February 22, New Zealand plays the first of a three-match series against England on March 6 in Dunedin, and West Indies plays Zimbabwe in the first of a two-match series on March 16.

Only a 3-0 series win for Pakistan could see South Africa slip to third position with 117 ratings points, pushing England to the top with Australia in second place.

India are placed fifth in the table with 105 rating points behind arch-rivals Pakistan (109 points).

A total of USD 3.8 million in prize money will be shared among the top four sides on April 1, 2013, 2014 and 2015, after the ICC Board approved a proposal earlier this year to substantially increase incentives in the form of prize money to promote Test cricket in the period leading up to the ICC Test Championship event in 2017.

Previously, the top team in the ICC Test rankings received a cheque for USD 175,000, but, from 2013, it will receive a minimum of USD 450,000, rising to USD 500,000 in 2015.

Meanwhile, South Africa batsman Hashim Amla has an opportunity to claim the No.1 ranking on the ICC Player Rankings for Test batsmen for the first time in his career when he takes to the field against Pakistan in the first Test of the three-match series in Johannesburg from February 1.

The bowlers’ table is headed by South Africa spearhead Dale Steyn, who is currently just five ratings points away from breaking the 900 ratings points barrier for the second time in his career.

David Warner ruled out of first two ODIs against West IndiesExplosive opener David Warner has fractured his left thumb and been withdrawn from Australia’s first two one-day internationals against the West Indies on Friday and Sunday.

Warner will be re-assessed next week ahead of the four-Test tour of India starting February 22, Cricket Australia said.

Usman Khawaja has been brought into the one-day squad to replace Warner who could still play in the final three ODIs.

“David Warner was struck on the left thumb by Mitchell Johnson in the nets,” said CA physiotherapist Kevin Sims.

“While the fracture is very minor, it is not worth taking any risks. The injury will keep him out of at least the next two … matches against West Indies.”

Australia skipper Michael Clarke, who missed the final ODI against Sri Lanka last week due to an ankle injury, is expected to play on Friday.

Warner, averaging 44.5 from 15 Tests, was still expected to be in the squad for India due to be announced later Thursday, but a batsman might be put on standby.

Fit-again all-rounder Shane Watson would be favourite to return to his favoured opening slot if Warner fails to recover in time.

Australia announce 17-man squad for India tourAustralia will take four spin-bowling options to India for their four-Test tour, with Glenn Maxwell and Steve Smith named in a 17-man squad alongside Nathan Lyon and Xavier Doherty.

The first Test starts on February 22 in Chennai and national selector John Inverarity said they would be ready for all conditions, with five pace bowlers also included.

“This squad has the flexibility that will be required for the varying conditions expected in India, and it will provide valuable experience to a number of young players,” he said.

“The squad includes a spin bowling all-rounder in Maxwell and a medium-fast all-rounder in Moises Henriques.

“In aiming for more depth in a bowling attack, the squad would allow for three pace bowlers, a leading spinner and Maxwell, or two pace bowlers, the two spinners and Henriques. These are two of the options.”

The pace attack is led by Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle, Mitchell Starc, James Pattinson and Jackson Bird.
Doherty’s recent form also saw him selected.

“We certainly feel he is much improved in the longer format of the game since he made his Test debut in 2010-11 against England,” said Inverarity.

“He adds further flexibility to the squad, depending on the conditions.”

Explosive opener David Warner was also included, despite a fracture of his left thumb which has forced him out of Australia’s first two one-day internationals against the West Indies on Friday and Sunday.

Pakistan opener Taufeeq Umar ruled out of South Africa tour #PakvsSA

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 09:53 PM PST

Pakistan opener Taufeeq Umar ruled out of South Africa tourPakistan on Wednesday suffered a crucial blow when experienced opener Taufeeq Umar was ruled out of the tour of South Africa just two days before the first Test starts in Johannesburg.

The 31-year-old suffered a muscle injury in his shin and the team management decided to call for a replacement.

“The team management has informed us that after MRI reports on his injury doctors have advised him four to five weeks rest, so Umar will return and a replacement will be sent,” Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) spokesman Nadeem Sarwar told AFP.

Umar has played 43 Tests since making his debut in 2001 and has so far scored 2,943 runs.

He missed Pakistan’s four-day side-match in East London and was expected to be fit before the first of three Tests in South Africa.

Umar’s injury will allow Nasir Jamshed to make his Test debut after scoring half-centuries in the side-game against South African Invitation XI which ended in a draw on Monday.

The PCB also announced that another experienced opener, Imran Farhat, will fill in for Umar during the Test series.

Pakistan will also play two Twenty20 internationals and five one-day matches on the tour, for which a squad will be announced next month.

England not taking New Zealand lightly : Stuart Broad #EngvsNZ

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 04:00 AM PST

England not taking New Zealand lightly Stuart BroadEngland will not allow New Zealand’s recent woes to lull them into a false sense of security, the tourists’ Twenty 20 captain Stuart Broad insisted on Wednesday.

England head into the tour as firm favourites over the Black Caps, who lost two recent Test matches in South Africa by an innings and have been destabilised by Ross Taylor’s axeing as captain in favour of Brendon McCullum.

But Broad pointed to New Zealand’s face-saving one-day series win over the Proteas after their Test losses as proof the Black Caps will still pose a threat on the tour, particularly as they will be playing on home soil.

“We know New Zealand have just beaten South Africa in the one-day format and having played a lot of Twenty20 cricket against them, we know they’re very dangerous,” Broad told reporters.

“We’ll have to prepare for that and get used to the conditions as much as we can. We know New Zealand have some fantastic Twenty20 players and that’s who we’ll concentrate on… we’ll have to be at the top of our game.”

England arrived Tuesday night in New Zealand after winning their recent four-Test series in India 2-1 but losing the subsequent one-day series 3-2.

The tour begins with three T20s, followed by three one-dayers then three Tests.

Broad was reluctant to comment on New Zealand’s Test prospects, a format in which the hosts are ranked eighth in the world and England second, saying his side would approach each section of the tour separately.

“If we focus on New Zealand cricket and what is going to happen ahead we’ll lose sight of what we need to do,” he said.

The Blacks Caps appear set to be without veteran spinner Daniel Vettori in the Test series as he continues to struggle with an Achilles injury.

“The Test matches against England may be a stretch for me,” he told Fairfax Media, saying he hoped to be back for New Zealand’s tour of England in May.

The first T20 international will be at Auckland’s Eden Park on February 9.

Daniel Vettori likely to miss England series due to injury

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 03:00 AM PST

Daniel Vettori likely to miss England series due to injuryDaniel Vettori is unlikely to recover from his Achilles injury in time to be fit for the home series against England, the New Zealand allrounder told local media.

Although aiming to play domestic one-day cricket at the end of February, Vettori said he would be unable to play any longer-form games in the leadup to the three-Test series, which starts with the first match in Dunedin on March 6.

“I’m hoping to be available for selection for Northern Districts’ one-day campaign, and then whatever happens from there happens,” Vettori said in comments published by Fairfax Media on Wednesday, referring to his domestic side.

Northern Districts play their first match in New Zealand’s local one-day competition on Feb. 26.

“I won’t be able to play any four-day cricket, so the Test matches against England may be a stretch for me.”

Vettori, New Zealand’s most experienced international, said the return tour to England starting in May was a more realistic goal.

“But Achilles are funny things, they come and go with the pain and I need to prove to not only the selectors, but myself, that I can manage back-to-back days of cricket. That’s the plan, but I’ll just see how I go,” the 34-year-old added.

Former captain Vettori hurt his foot at the World Twenty20 tournament in September and missed New Zealand’s subsequent tours to Sri Lanka and South Africa.

New Zealand head into their home series against England a lowly eighth in the Test rankings and after a demoralising 2-0 series loss away to the Proteas.

ICC Women’s World Cup 2013 : India vs West Indies, 1st ODI, Preview #IndvsWI

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 02:00 AM PST

ICC Women's World Cup 2013 - India vs West Indies, 1st ODI, PreviewUntouched by the hype and hoopla that follows their male counterparts, India Women are all set to start their World Cup campaign when they take on the West Indies in a Group A match in Mumbai on Thursday.

The day-night clash would set the ball rolling for the event, which will also be held in Cuttack where the Pakistan team (placed in Group B) is based due to security concerns in Mumbai.

Group A matches are to be held in Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium, MIG Club at Bandra and the Bandra-Kurla Complex ground of the Mumbai Cricket Association.

Group B matches, involving strong contenders Australia, New Zealand, South Africa and Pakistan, would be held in two grounds in Cuttack.

The remaining Group fixtures for India, who finished third in the last championship, are against three-time winners (1973, 1993 and 2009) England at the Brabourne on February 3, and qualifiers Sri Lanka at the same ground on February 6.

Prior to that England will take on Sri Lanka on February 1 at the Brabourne.

Sri Lanka would lock horns with the West Indies side on February 4 at the MIG ground in Bandra while the England-Windies clash on February 6 is scheduled at the BKC.

Apart from Mithali, India would bank on former captain Jhulan Goswami, diminutive batter Poonam Raut, wicketkeeper Sulakshana Naik. The bowling attack would be spearheaded by Gouher Sultana and Niranjana Nagarajan.

“We have senior players like Jhulan Goswami, Amita Sharma, vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who has been among runs. We have two comeback players (Murugesan) Thirush Kamini, Karuna Jain, who have played the last World Cup. I am hoping that with this kind of combination, we will do very well,” said world number one batter and Indian captain Mithali Raj.

England, led by Charlotte Edwards who is playing her fifth successive World Cup, are tipped to top the group and commence their bid to win the crown for the fourth time with a game against Sri Lanka on February 1 at CCI. The second and third place in the group would be a hard fought contest, with the West Indies a vastly improved side from four years ago.

If recent form is anything to go by, it will probably be Sri Lanka, led by Shashikala Siriwardena, who are expected to miss the Super Six stage, starting on February 8.

Sri Lanka won the right to compete in the tournament when it finished in the top four of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifiers held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in November 2011.

The England squad features familiar faces, including captain Edwards, while there are eight players from the original winning squad of 2009 including the in-form ICC Women’s Twenty20 Player of the Year 2012, Sarah Taylor, who will once again lead the side’s batting line-up.

England captain Edwards requires a mere 61 more ODI runs to usurp Belinda Clark of Australia to become the most successful run-scorer in women’s cricket. Clark’s record of 4,844 ODI runs has stood since 2005.

England’s bowling attack features the number one ODI bowler in the Reliance ICC Women’s ODI Player Rankings, Katherine Brunt, who currently has 76 ODI scalps to her name, along with the talented slow left-armer Holly Colvin, who happened to also hit the winning runs in 2009 when the team defeated Australia in the final of the event.

West Indies feature a mixture of youth and experience, including the only twins in the event, Kycia and Kyshona Knight of Barbados. The side is led by Trinidadian Merissa Aguilleira while ICC Women’s ODI Player of the Year 2012, Stafanie Taylor, is her deputy.

In-form spinner Anisa Mohammed will be the one to watch after the 24-year-old claimed 7-14 in the final of the ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier in 2011 against Pakistan. She will be hoping the sub-continent conditions will suit her style of play.

The 2012 Women’s World Twenty20 champions and five-time World Cup winners Australia begin as favourites to qualify for the Super Six stage from Group B.

Alongside Australia and New Zealand, which lifted the trophy back in 2000 and were runner-up in the last Women’s World Cup in 2009, will also be front-runners to qualify for the Super Six stage of the event from this group.

Pakistan and South Africa qualified for the event after finishing second and fourth in the qualifiers staged in Dhaka last year.

Pakistan made the final of that event, losing to West Indies in the final by 130 runs while South Africa played Sri Lanka in the 3-4 play-off and lost that match by three wickets.

The Group B teams will be in action on the second day of the tournament on February 1 when Australia play Pakistan at Barabati Stadium, while New Zealand will take on South Africa at DRIEMS Cricket Ground in Cuttack.

On February 3, New Zealand will take on Pakistan at Barabati Stadium while Australia will go up against South Africa at DRIEMS Cricket Ground but the final day of Group B fixtures on February 5 could prove to be the most exciting.

The last set of fixtures in Group B will see old rivals Australia and New Zealand go head-to-head at the DRIEMS Cricket Ground, while Pakistan will take on the ever-improving South Africa in a bid to ensure qualification for the Super Six stage of the event.

Australia and New Zealand have met 115 times. Australia have won 84 matches and New Zealand have been winners 29 times with two ending in a no-result.

Of the Australia squad heading to India, led by Jodie Fields, two — Lisa Sthalekar and Alex Blackwell — have tasted World Cup glory, having featured in the 2005 team that lifted the trophy.

Besides Blackwell and Sthalekar, another member of the 2005 winning team is also with the side, Cathryn Fitzpatrick is now the head coach. Fitzpatrick’s assistant is former Canada men’s team opening batsman John Davison.

The youngest member of the team is 17-year-old Holly Ferling, while all-rounder Ellyse Perry and batting duo of Alyssa Healy and Jess Cameron were members of the recent ICC Women’s World Twenty20 winning side.

One player to watch out for is in-form batter, Meg Lanning, who recently scored the fastest century by an Australian male or female player in an ODI.

The right-handed batter, born in Singapore, smashed her way to a 45-ball 100 in 55 minutes against New Zealand in December last year during the Rose Bowl Series and will be hoping for a repeat performance here in India.

New Zealand will be led by the Suzie Bates, who will have a wealth of experience in her side including the likes of Lucy Doolan, Nicola Browne, Sophie Devine, Sara McGlashan, Rachael Priest and Sian Ruck.

Two faces to watch out for will be 22-year-old Morna Nielsen, a spinner from Tauranga along with medium-pacer Lea Tahuhu from Christchurch.

Pakistan will be led by Sana Mir who will be hoping the sub-continental conditions suit her team of talented bowlers including spinner Nida Dar and uncapped medium-pacer Diana Baig.

The all-round skills of vice-captain Bismah Maroof will also prove important for the side if the team is to remain in the competition past the group stage.

South Africa are led by batter Mignon du Preez, while the side has welcomed back former captain Cri-Zelda Brits who temporarily took a step back from international cricket. The team is currently eighth in the world rankings.

If previous results are any guide, then South Africa may knock Pakistan out of the group. The two sides have met nine times in ODIs, with South Africa have been victorious on seven occasions, Pakistan have won once with one no result.

Indian team without Sachin Tendulkar difficult to imagine : Virat Kohli

Posted: 30 Jan 2013 01:00 AM PST

Indian team without Sachin Tendulkar difficult to imagine - Virat KohliGrowing up in the era of Sachin Tendulkar, star India batsman Virat Kohli said he found it difficult to imagine an Indian team without the senior batsman.

“For 23 years, he has taught us how to perform with so many people expecting you to score a century everyday. It is unbelievable. Growing up, I could never imagine a team without Tendulkar but someday, one needs to take that (retirement) decision,” the 23-year-old batsman told NDTV.

In a lighter vein though, he said that Tendulkar insisted that a self proclaimed ‘hip hop’ and R&B lover like him had to listen to old english songs.

“He loved a selected few songs. He is a great fan of Kishore Kumar but he made me listen to old english songs with meaningful melody. As far as I am concerned, I am listening to Swedish House Mafia a lot these days apart from popular Punjabi numbers.”

Kohli feels that one quality that he wishes to imbibe from his skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni is the art of “staying calm” in pressure situations.

“One thing I like about him (Dhoni) is his calmness. I wish I could have some of it. He is someone who doesn’t disclose too much which would let opposition know about what’s going on in his mind. Wish I could get some of it,” Kohli said.

He termed Yuvraj Singh as “an elder brother” whose courageous comeback to international cricket after fighting a rare germ cell cancer was an “inspiration.”

“Courage and mental strength are two things one can learn from Yuvraj. The challenges that he has faced in life and career is something that one can learn from.”

Sunil Gavaskar has compared him with Nawab Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi stating that the youngster has the same “flair and panache”.

“You feel humbled when you are compared with a legend like Nawab of Pataudi by another legend Sunil Gavaskar.”

Although there weren’t too many questions on the team’s performance in recent tournaments, Kohli felt that the new ODI rules will be “helpful for batsmen in the sub-continent” while “bowlers will find it beneficial outside the sub-continent.”
