Pakistan thrash India in 2nd ODI to clinch series 2-0 #IndvsPak

Pakistan thrash India in 2nd ODI to clinch series 2-0An insipid India slumped to yet another series defeat with a pathetic display as arch-rivals Pakistan spanked the hosts by 85 runs in the second one-dayer to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Thursday.

Scorecard | Highlights 2nd ODI Ind vs Pak

Riding on Nasir Jamshed’s second consecutive century, the visitors posted 250 all out and then shot out the Indians for a paltry 165 to record a convincing victory with two overs to spare at the Eden Gardens.

It was yet another woeful display by the famed Indian batting line-up, which has been struggling for sometime now and has been largely responsible for the team’s forgettable results in recent times.

The huge defeat to the arch-rivals will now raise questions on the future of some of India’s under-performing batting stars, who have let the team down more often than not.

Jamshed (106) notched up his third ODI century, all three coming against India, but Pakistan suffered a dramatic collapse after being at a healthy 141 for no loss at the mid-way stage. Mohammed Hafeez was the other contributor with a rollicking 76 off 74 balls.

The floodgates opened up after the dismissal of Hafeez as none of the other batsmen could hang around for long on a slow Eden Garden track, which made stroke-making difficult after the ball became older.

The Indians needed a good start from their struggling openers — Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag — but it did not materialise yet again, putting pressure on the jittery middle-order.

Sehwag (31), Gambhir (11), Virat Kohli (6), Yuvraj Singh (9) and Suresh Raina (18) perished in quick succession to give the visitors the upper hand in what eventually turned out to be a lop-sided contest.

Skipper Dhoni, who scored a heroic unbeaten 113 in the first ODI in Chennai, again provided some resistance with a cautious and unbeaten 54 but wickets kept tumbling at the other end to nullify his efforts.

The series defeat against Pakistan marks another low for the struggling team which suffered an embarrassing Test series debacle against England at home and levelled a T20 series 1-1.

Thursday’s defeat has also rendered the third and final ODI at Ferozeshah Kotla in Delhi on Sunday inconsequential.

India lost to Pakistan last time around at home in 2004-05 when they lost the six-match series 2-4.

And now India have lost all the four matches they have played against Pakistan at Eden Gardens.

Chasing a modest 251, the under-fire opening duo of Gambhir and Sehwag had a sedate start. Sehwag scored a few boundaries but just when the partnership looked like building, Junaid provided the breakthrough in the form of Gambhir.

The left-hander chased a widish delivery and the ball hit his stump after taking an inside edge of his blade.

It was a familiar story from there on as the failing middle-order found the going tough against some disciplined fast bowling of Umar Gul and Junaid.

India were reduced to 70 for four as promising Kohli continued and Yuvraj could not get to double digit score, both being dismissed caught behind taking thin edges.

As India stuttered, Gul almost dismissed Raina running into the non-striking end but his throw missed the stumps with the Indian left-hander diving forward.

Raina also started his walk back when he was stumped off Hafeez.

Promoted ahead of Jadeja, Ashwin (3) did not last long going down to the guile of Shoaib Malik for yet another stumping.

Jadeja (13) could not give the support Dhoni needed in the middle when he was caught at mid-on as it was just a matter of time for the visitors to seal the series.

Earlier, under overcast conditions, Jamshed scored a fluent 106 from 126 balls and along with Hafeez put up a handsome 141-run opening partnership.

But India made a dramatic comeback riding on left-arm spinner Ravindra Jadeja’s 3 for 41 as Pakistan were bundled out in 48.3 overs.

After giving the first breakthrough, Jadeja took two wickets — Jamshed and Kamran Akmal — in one over to trigger a collapse and Ishant Sharma (3/34) polished off the tail.

From 141 for no loss, Pakistan lost 10 wickets in 25 overs as India made a spectacular comeback.

At the start, the inexperienced Indian attack of Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar Kumar could not make use of the overcast conditions.

In his ‘home’ debut, Dinda was wayward with his bouncers, conceding three wides — two in his second over — while Bhuvneshwar too lacked the bite as the Pakistani duo went scotfree.

The 23-year-old Jamshed continued from where he had left in Chennai, while Hafeez made up for his duck with a sensible batting display and rotating the strike.

The duo never panicked and such clinical was their approach that they put on 100 runs in exactly 100 balls — incidentally, Pakistan’s first century stand by any opening pair at the Eden.

Part-time spinner Jadeja finally gave the breakthrough almost at the midway stage when Hafeez missed the ball trying to break free.

Azhar Ali (2) continued his poor run when he was run out after being sent back by Jamshed as Pakistan lost their second wicket in four runs.

They quickly lost third wicket as Younis Khan (10) was adjudged leg before despite a bat-pad. Jamshed, however, kept his cool to bring up his second consecutive century.

Jamshed clobbered Jadeja over his head for a straight boundary to move to 96. He straight drove one uppishly in the mid-off boundary region to bring up his hundred.

But he could not carry his innings through as he became Jadeja’s second victim. Jadeja claimed Kamran Akmal (0), his third, in the same over to trigger Pakistani middle order collapse.

India will take on Pakistan in the second and a must win ODI of the three match ODI series at Eden gardens, Kolkata. Pakistan have a superb record at the ground. Pakistan haven’t lost any game against India at Eden Gardens and will definitely look to maintain that. Pakistan with 1-0 lead will look to carry the momentum and seal the series at Eden Gardens. Pakistan have been brilliant in every department. For Indian teams they have lot to work in the do-or-die match of the series. Indian batsman have led down the team a lot and now if they don’t perform India will loose yet another series at home. The only positive for Indian team is there bowling have been good and Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been exceptional right through the series. India have to decide whether to go in with same 4 bowling options or with 5 as well. Other than that the big question will be on Rohit Sharma inclusion in the team. He hasn’t performed from quite some time and with Indian team in a situation where they can’t loose will he be included or not? Watch the highlights India-Pakistan 2nd ODI game below:

Jamshed: ‘I just looked to enjoy my batting. I missed the Man of the Match award last time but I’m happy to get it today. I just wanted to play my normal game. Hafeez played a superb knock with me, it made it easier. The pitch was a bit slow and difficult at the start. But once I got set, it was easier to play. I like batting against India, everyone follows these games so it was great to perform.’

Nasir Jamshed is the Man of the Match

Misbah: ‘The team really played well. The openers gave us the initiative and the bowlers did a great job as well. The way the wicket was playing, 300 was on the cards. It wasn’t going to be easy for a new batsman to walk in and score runs, so our openers did a great job. Our bowling unit is doing a great job, especially Junaid Khan. Irfan has the height and he is using it well. Jamshed is in great form, he is a good player and he is getting matured now. Eden Gardens is a lucky ground for us. I always enjoy playing in Kolkata.’

Dhoni: ‘The bowlers brought us back into the game. The spinners bowled well and the fast bowlers also contributed. We lost too many wickets with the bat. We could get 80 or 90 runs in the last 10 overs but we needed wickets in hand. That didn’t happen so it was too difficult. If one of the top 3 play with the middle order, it becomes easy. It’s not like they’re not trying though. We’ve got the experience in the batting line up but it’s about the form. We’ll have to adapt to the new rules as well. We’re a very good fielding side, we have to bowl well and score runs as well. There was something on the pitch for the fast bowlers and the spinners. Overall, there was plenty for each and everyone (talking about the pitch).’

Thirimanne misses ton, Sri Lanka 294 all out on Day 1 of 3rd Test #AusvsSL

Posted: 03 Jan 2013 04:16 AM PST

Thirimanne misses ton, Sri Lanka 294 all out on Day 1 of 3rd TestStand-in Lahiru Thirimanne and skipper Mahela Jayawardene missed centuries as injury-hit Sri Lanka slumped to 294 all out after a strong start to the third Sydney Test against Australia on Thursday.

Scorecard | Day 1 Highlights SL vs Aus 3rd Test

Thirimanne, who only arrived in Australia this week to cover for the injured Kumar Sangakkara, threw away a chance of a first Test hundred.

Jayawardene scored his first away Test 50 in more than three years but was caught at slip on 72.

The tourists, demoralised after last week’s innings and 201-run defeat in Melbourne to lose the series, showed greater resolve in the dead-rubber final Test as they chased their first ever Test win Down Under at the 13th attempt.

They were all out shortly before stumps on the opening day with paceman Jackson Bird taking four for 41 off 19.4 overs.

Thirimanne reached his highest Test score after he was given out leg before wicket to Bird for no score before the dismissal was overturned on review.

Thirimanne also had a life on 65 when put down by wicketkeeper Matthew Wade off spinner Nathan Lyon, but with a century in sight off 151 balls, he tossed away his wicket on 91.

His flashing miscue off Lyon was brilliantly caught by David Warner diving full length at cover point.

Thirimanne trudged from the wicket shaking his head as he watched his dismissal on the large screen.

Jayawardene earlier steadied the tourists after the loss of both openers before lunch.

The last time Jayawardene had passed 50 in an away Test was way back in November 2009 in India, although he has continued to score heavily at home. He went 26 innings outside Sri Lanka without a half-century.

It was a more confident Jayawardene than seen in the Hobart and Melbourne Tests and he faced 110 balls in 154 minutes before he was snapped up by Michael Clarke at slip off Mitchell Starc in the 43rd over.

Starc had a few anxious moments when New Zealand umpire Tony Hill checked for an overstepping no-ball. But replays showed that Starc’s heel was just behind the popping crease before he dragged it forward and the dismissal was confirmed.

Bird snared the wicket of Dimuth Karunaratne in the eighth over but Australia had to wait until 20 minutes before lunch for a second, with the dismissal of Tillakaratne Dilshan.

Karunaratne was out to a poor shot, attempting to pull Bird but only getting a top edge that was safely caught by Mike Hussey, playing in his 79th and last Test match. Dilshan was caught behind off Bird for 34.

Thilan Samaraweera went leg before wicket to Peter Siddle for 12. Angelo Mathews put on 55 runs for the fifth wicket with Thirimanne before he edged Starc to Hussey at second slip for 15.

Left-armer Starc yorked Dinesh Chandimal with the first ball of the second new ball for 24 late in the day.

Skipper Clarke had looked for a quick return on a bold toss decision to bowl on a green-tinged pitch, after going into a Test with four quicks for the first time since the third Test against India in Perth a year ago.

The Sydney Test had a poignant opening, with both teams paying their respects to Tony Greig in a moving farewell to the former England captain.

Players and fans observed a minute’s silence in honour of Greig, who died at the weekend aged 66 from a heart attack while battling lung cancer.
