Philander: ‘I would just like to take this wicket away with me wherever I go. I love it. Teams always analyse me. The more you change your tactics, the more they play into my hands. I’ve changed slightly from what I started off. I now take off a lot closer from the stumps. I think my garage is getting a lot smaller now with all these trophies.’

Vernon Philander is the Man of the Match for his splendid spell of 5/7 in the first innings.

Graeme Smith: ‘We had such a terrific morning session, to bowl them out for 45. We were always ahead after that. We need to carry on in PE. Vernon knows his game really well. If there is something in the wicket he picks it up very quickly. It’s nice to have him with his intensity. Alviro batted well. His 100 was key. It was not an easy time to bat on. Out catching has been excellent throughout over the last few years. This has been a little disappointing but we need to get back to that high standards. Both Kallis and Steyn are high class performers. I have lost words to describe them. They are huge assets to the side.’

Brendon McCullum: ‘We were outplayed in all facets of the game. Vernon bowled exceptionally well. We were not quite up to the challenge. I’m pleased with yesterday’s fightback. Had we put in a good first innings effort after surviving the first few hours as we did in the 2nd, the cracks might have come into play and helped us. Brownlie played a fantastic innings under trying circumstances. He can take a lot of heart from that. Overall though it’s a very disappointed dressing room. We need to take the lessons and smooth out the rough edges in the next game. I think the bowling was patchy on the first day. I thought yesterday was really good. We managed to take 5/90.’

Misbah-ul-Haq slams Pakistan’s middle order batsman despite win over India #IndvsPak

Misbah-ul-Haq slams middle order batsman despite win over IndiaPakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq Thursday credited a team effort with a special mention for his bowlers after his team won the crucial second onedayer at the Eden Gardens here to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series against India.

“Our opening batsmen gave us a fantastic start and our bowlers bowled really well to take quick wickets at crucial intervals, which allowed us this victory. Victory against India is always big and surely this is a big victory for us,” Misbah said in the post match press conference.

He was, however, critical of his middle order for their failure to capitalise on the 141-run opening partnership and conceded that Pakistan target of 250 runs was chaseable.

“After the opening partnership, 290-300 was always on the cards. The pitch was good but our middle order failed to capitalise. The target of 250 was not a winning total. The middle order did not play the way it should have.”

“We knew we will have to fight and our bowlers performed well to get quick wickets. The bowlers not only took quick wickets at crucial intervals but also were able to contain the Indian batsmen which put them under pressure,” said Misbah.

He was all praise for his young pacers Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan and also credited seasoned performers Saeed Ajmal and Umar Gul, who as bowling unit performed “exceptionally well”.

Special mention, however, was reserved for opening batsman and Man of the Match Nasir Jamshed, who scored a classy 106 and, of course, the Eden Gardens.

“Fantastic crowd, I enjoy playing here, it’s something you don’t have in any other ground in the world,” were Misbah’s words about the venue where Pakistan are yet to lose an ODI against India.

Legendary Glenn McGrath inducted to ICC Hall of Fame

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 01:25 AM PST

Legendary Glenn McGrath inducted to ICC Hall of FameAustralian pace legend Glenn McGrath was on Friday inducted into the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame, making him its 68th male member.

McGrath was formally inducted during the lunch interval of the ongoing third Test between Australia and Sri Lanka here.

McGrath joins fellow 2012-13 inductees West Indian Brian Lara and England’s Enid Bakewell in being recognised by the ICC and the living members of the Hall of Fame.

While Lara and Bakewell were inducted in September at the ICC Awards, McGrath was inducted at his home ground of the SCG by ICC President Alan Isaac, along with Cricket Australia chairman Wally Edwards in front of a large and appreciative crowd.

“I am delighted to be inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame and to be considered among the greats of the game. To be honoured alongside the likes of Don Bradman, Dennis Lillee and Michael Holding who were all my heroes when I was growing up is something I could never have dreamed of when I first started playing cricket,” McGrath said.

“I have to thank my family, my team-mates, my coaches and all those who have supported me throughout the years to help mold me into the cricketer that I became. I took great pride every time I donned the Baggy Green and I now take great pride in being inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame,” he added.

A fourth and final inductee of 2012-13 will be announced later this year.

McGrath, who was born in in Dubbo, New South Wales in 1970, represented Australia in 124 Test matches between 1993 and 2007 claiming 563 Test wickets at an average of 21.64. He has taken more Test wickets than any other seam bowler currently in the game or retired.

Australia won 22 of the 30 Ashes Test matches that he played, with the side losing just four matches when McGrath was part of the bowling attack.

McGrath was part of the Australian side that won three successive World Cups — 1999, 2003 and 2007. He still holds the record for most wickets in World Cup competitions with 71 scalps and his figures of 7-15 against Namibia are the best in the competition’s history.

When McGrath retired from the game in 2007 he had represented Australia in 250 ODIs, claiming 381 wickets at an average of 22.02 while he took over 800 first-class wickets in his career.
