Shikhar Dhawan, Milind Kumar power Delhi to six wicket win over England XI

Posted: 08 Jan 2013 08:40 AM PST

Shikhar Dhawan, Milind Kumar power Delhi to six wicket win over England XIShikhar Dhawan served a timely reminder to the national selectors with a brilliant century as Delhi defeated England by six wickets to hand the visitors their second successive defeat in warm-up games here on Tuesday. Chasing a difficult 294 for five set by England, Delhi rode on skipper Dhawan’s 110 and Milind Kumar’s unbeaten 78 to overhaul the target with nine balls to spare.

Left-hander Dhawan, who last played for India in the West Indies, cracked his 110 off only 109 balls to set up a chase which initially looked difficult. He hit 13 boundaries and three huge sixes — one each off Jade Dernbach, James Tredwell and Stuart Meaker. Continue reading below

If Dhawan and Unmukt Chand (37) started the chase well, adding 98 for the opening stand, unheralded youngster Milind and veteran Rajat Bhatia (45 not out) finished off the run chase with a flourish as they smashed 103 runs off 72 balls. The day, however, belonged to Dhawan who hogged the limelight with brilliant authorative display. Time and again, he drove the pace quartet of Steven Finn, Dernbach, Meaker and Chris Woakes through the covers. The moment, the pacers dug it in short, he was quickly in a position to play the pull shot.

Dhawan completed his century off 98 balls with a big six off Tredwell over deep mid-wicket. Credit should also be given to young Milind, who showed a lot of maturity and paced his innings to perfection. Whether it was playing the slash over deep third man or driving on the up, Milind had an answer to everything that was thrown at him.

Milind hit seven fours and three sixes in his 85-ball knock. The shot that stood out was a six over extra cover off Meaker. Earlier, Ian Bell scored a fine century as England posted a challenging score of 294 for five after being put into bat. Having scored 91 in the first match against India A, Bell was again in fine form as he batted with lot of responsibility scoring 108 runs with the help of 10 fours and two huge sixes.

Earlier, Bell hit 10 boundaries and two sixes in 125 balls while Morgan hit five fours and two sixes. Craig Kieswetter also thrashed the Delhi bowlers to finish with 41 off 27 balls which included three sixes. The main feature of the England innings was Bell’s 113-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Eoin Morgan, who smashed 52 off 55 balls.

Morgan-Bell duo got their runs in only 93 balls as the Delhi attack led by India discard Ashish Nehra looked pedestrian. While Parvinder Awana bowled a good first spell, it was certainly not enough as England got off to a good start with skipper Alastair Cook (44) and Bell adding 70 runs for the opening wicket.

Cook, who opted out of the first practice match, decided to rest Kevin Pietersen on Tuesday. The left-hander hit some lovely strokes during his 57-ball stay. The best of his seven boundaries was a cover drive off Awana. While Cook was batting, Bell decided to play the role of second fiddle as he let his captain take bulk of the strike.

It was seamer Sumit Narwal, who gave Delhi their first breakthrough when he bowled Cook. Young Joe Root tried to play a sweep shot off left-arm spinner Varun Sood and the resultant skier was taken by Punit Bisht. Samit Patel (13) was then bowled by an arm ball from Sood that kept very low.
Once Morgan joined Bell, the duo started taking on the Delhi bowlers. Bell hit Rajat Bhatia for a hige six into the middle tier of the deep mid-wicket stands. Bell’s second six was straight into the sightscreen. For Delhi, young spinner Sood was the best bowler with figures of three for 45 as Nehra went for 48 in nine wicketless overs.

Ian Bell's century guides England to 294 for 5 in practice match against DelhiIan Bell scored a fine century as England posted a challenging 294 for five against Delhi in the second and final warm-up match at the Feroz Shah Kotla ground on Tuesday.

Having scored 91 in the first match against India A, Bell continued his fine form as he batted with lot of responsibility, hitting 125-ball 108 with the help of 10 fours and two huge sixes.

The main feature of the England innings was 113-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Bell and Eoin Morgan, who smashed 52 off 55 balls laced with five boundaries and two sixes.

Craig Kieswetter also thrashed the Delhi bowlers to finish with an unbeaten 41 off 27 balls which included three sixes.

Morgan-Bell duo got their runs in only 93 balls as the Delhi attack led by India discard Ashish Nehra looked pedestrian.

For the hosts, young Delhi U-25 spinner Sood was the best bowler with figures of three for 45 from 10 overs.

Nehra went for 48 in nine wicketless overs and Awana also got a bit of stick during his second and third spells as he had ended with poor figures of 8-053-0.

Brief Scores: England Xl 294 for 5 in 50 overs (Ian Bell 108, Eoin Morgan 52, Alastair Cook 44; Varun Sood 3 for 45) vs Delhi

Umar Akmal slammed for irresponsible performance in 3rd ODI #IndvsPak

Umar Akmal slammed for irresponsible performancePakistan’s young batsman Umar Akmal has drawn flak from former players and critics for his below-par performance during the just-concluded tour of India.

Even Pakistan’s former captain Wasim Akram singled out Umar for criticism after the third and final one-dayer in Delhi on Sunday.

“When will Umar learn to play responsibly? He has been around in international cricket now for a considerable time. He really needs to think about his game now,” Wasim said.

Umar, the younger brother of wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, got out at a crucial time in the match with Pakistan chasing a low total of 167 set by India.

Pakistan’s former captain Rashid Latif was more forthright in his views about Umar and the match.

“I think it is about time Umar is told by the selectors he is not needed in the national team until he changes his approach and attitude towards the game,” Latif said.

“Umar has to be sent back to domestic cricket until the selectors see a visible change in his approach and attitude. He has got too many opportunities to realise his talent. But he is not finishing games,” Latif said.

Umar was also in the eye of the storm before the Indian tour when his department, Sui Gas, which includes Mohammad Hafeez and Misbah-ul-Haq, sidelined him after he missed some games in the President’s Trophy tournament due to the wedding of his brother Adnan.

Former Pakistan captain Moin Khan also felt that Umar was not doing justice to his enormous talent.

“He is talented no doubt about it but he needs to learn that all this talent is useless until it results in good results for his team. He is just not showing the approach of a finisher which is sad,” Moin said.

Umar, who played in three matches on the Indian tour, is expected to be axed for the forthcoming South African tour as the selectors have more confidence in upcoming batsman Haris Sohail.

‘We have to avenge Test losses in ODIs’, Yuvraj Singh #IndvsEng

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 11:30 PM PST

We have to avenge Test losses in ODIs, Yuvraj SinghIndia cricketer Yuvraj Singh on Monday said that the upcoming ODI series against England will provide the hosts with an opportunity to avenge the reverses they suffered in Tests late last year.

“England defeated us in the Test series recently. They are a good unit. We have to play well to defeat them in the upcoming ODI series and avenge our loss,” said the all-rounder at the launch of an event.

Yuvraj is satisfied with his form and hoped to be able to play bigger innings in the five-match series.

“I am hitting the ball well and playing well in patches at the moment. I have been in good form in the T20s, hope to carry it forward and play longer innings in the series,” he said.

England batsman Kevin Pietersen felt Yuvraj is the dangerman in the Indian line-up and needs to be dismissed early.

“He is the most destructive batsman in the Indian line-up. We get to get him early else he can take away the match from us,” said Pieterson.

Commenting on his tumultuous relation with the Indian ace whom he once referred to as ‘pie chucker’ in the past, Pietersen said, “We are rivals on the field, but away from it we are all good friends. But on the field he will be looking to dismiss me, and I will also try to do the same.”

India will take on England in the 1st ODI of the series on January 11 at Rajkot.

I went too far, admits Shane Warne #BBL

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 10:30 PM PST

I went too far, admits Shane WarneAustralian spin legend Shane Warne on Monday accepted the one-match ban and $4,700 fine imposed on him for an ugly confrontation with West Indian Marlon Samuels during a Big Bash Twenty20 clash, conceding that he went too far.

Warne and Samuels had to be separated by the umpires after a bust-up that involved an angry exchange of words. After a hearing on Monday, Warne, who is leading the Melbourne Stars, was slapped with a one-match ban.

Samuels’ hearing, meanwhile, would be conducted later as he is nursing an eye injury picked up during the match. The Caribbean player is competing for Melbourne Renegade in the T20 event.

“I have decided to accept my penalty of a 1 match ban! Let’s hope the boys can win tomorrow & we can make the semi finals…” Warne tweeted.

“Thanks for support guys, sport can be an emotional & at times very passionate too. I went to(o) far in trying to stand up for the team !!!” he added.

In an earlier tweet, Warne had stated that he considered the punishment harsh.

“I’m disappointed at some of my actions last night as captain & as a player, but I’m also very disappointed at the severe penalty I received!” he said.

The mercurial spin legend had thrown the ball at Samuels’ chest during the match. In reaction, the Jamaican tossed his bat towards the Australian. Both the players then confronted each other before being separated by the umpires.

Cricket Australia charged both players with multiple breaches of code of behaviour. Warne was found guilty of three of four offences.

The veteran leg-spinner was punished for showing dissent at an umpire’s decision, using obscene language and deliberate physical contact.

But the charge of throwing the ball at or near the West Indian in an “inappropriate and/or dangerous manner” was dropped.

Warne said he was disappointed with his behaviour but maintained that the punishment was harsh.

“Yes I went a bit too far with my emotions and passion, but was standing up for my teammate & trying to get us back in the game…

“Lastly, will take my penalty on the chin, as I was disappointed with some of my actions, in my opinion though the penalty is very harsh..” he tweeted.

Marlon Samuels ruled out of Big Bash due to injury

Marlon Samuels ruled out of Big Bash due to injuryWest Indies all-rounder Marlon Samuels, awaiting punishment for his involvement in a bat and ball throwing incident with spinner Shane Warne, will miss the remainder of Australia’s domestic Twenty20 competition through injury.

The Melbourne Renegades player has a suspected fracture of the eye socket suffered on Sunday when he top-edged a bouncer from Melbourne Stars’ Lasith Malinga into his face.

He will be replaced by Englishman Alex Hales, Big Bash organisers said on Tuesday.

The Renegades beat Warne’s Melbourne Stars to guarantee a home semi-final but the match will be remembered for the heated argument between the former Australian spinner and Samuels.

Warne was banned for one game and fined A$4,500 ($4,700) after being found guilty of three offences, including showing dissent to the umpire, engaging in physical contact with other players and using offensive language.

Samuels, who threw his bat in the direction of Warne after the Stars’ captain hit him with the ball when throwing it to the wicketkeeper, was charged with two offences with his case yet to be heard because of his injury.

India-Pakistan third ODI at Kotla was fixed, says Paul Nixon

Posted: 07 Jan 2013 09:39 PM PST

India-Pakistan third ODI at Kotal fixed, says Paul NixonThe third One-Day International (ODI) between India and Pakistan played at the Feroz Shah Kotla on January 6 was fixed, if former England wicketkeeper Paul Nixon is to be believed.

According to a report by NDTVCricket, Nixon, who played 19 ODIs and one T20 International for England implied on social networking site Twitter that the dead rubber between the arch-rivals was fixed.

His tweets during the last few overs of the match read, “Pakistan throwing this game away eh ! #thereisasurprise 24 from 24…Strangely my money is on India $$$$ from here … Watch this space.” (sic)

Another tweet read, “Pakistan will just loose last few balls … #usualstory #dodgey.” (sic)

When one of Nixon’s followers on Twitter asked him directly whether he was implying the game was fixed, the 42-year-old said, “r u watching the game???” (sic)

Nixon also retweeted other tweets which suggested the game was fixed, such as: “This game is a joke especially when u see hafeez play a lap sweep with a leg slip in place” (sic) and “It must be India’s 12th Man…..the Bookmaker!”

India registered a nail-biting victory in the low-scoring match after putting up 167 on the board. Pakistan were then bowled out for 157 after being 113 for three at one stage. Pakistan had beaten India comprehensively in the first two ODIs.

This wasn’t the first time Nixon flirted with the match-fixing angle. In June last year, he had revealed in his book “Keeping Quiet – Paul Nixon: The Autobiography” that he was offered US$ 5 million by an Indian bookie to throw a domestic T20 match.

Nixon has since deleted the tweets in question.
