James Tredwell stars as England beat India by 9 runs in 1st ODI #IndvsEng

James Tredwell stars as England beat India by 9 runs in 1st ODIIndia’s woeful run of losses continued after a struggling top-order failed to convert good starts even on a placid track as England drew first blood with a thrilling nine-run victory in the first cricket one dayer here on Friday.

Chasing a stiff target of 326, India lacked the batting firepower and were restricted to a 316 for nine in a high-scoring contest to concede a 1-0 lead to visitors in the five-match series.

Opting to bat first, England rode on a record 158-run opening stand between captain Alastair Cook (75) and in-form Ian Bell (85) to post an imposing 325 for four on a batting paradise at the newly built Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium.

The Indians conceded as many as 38 runs in the final two overs with Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar giving away 20 and 18 runs respectively. The late flourish by England proved costly for the hosts.

India began the run chase in right earnest with Ajinkya Rahane (47) and an out-of form Gautam Gambhir (52) adding 96 runs for the opening stand but both were guilty of frittering away a good start.

Yuvraj Singh (61), Suresh Raina (50) and skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (32) were other notable scorers but again none of them could translate the start into a match-winning effort.

Off-spinner James Tredwell was the pick of the English bowlers as he scalped four for 44 while Jade Dernbach chipped in with two wickets.

It was a creditable turnaround for the visitors who came into match with back-to-back defeats in the warm-up games against India A and Delhi respectively.

The two teams will now travel to Kochi for the second one-dayer to be held on January 15.

James Tredwell: If the batsman plays a good shot, then hard luck , but I was just executing my skills. Raina bowled pretty well and I just tried to copy him. We got wickets at the right time and that was helped us. The batsmen while going for their shots might play into your hands. Most of the stadiums in India have been fantastic.

James Tredwell is the Man of the Match

Alastair Cook: It was a good win. Everyone in the dressing room is proud of it. We made the most of winning the toss. If one of the batsmen had gotten to a big hundred we could have gotten to 340, but Samit batted really well. To defend 325 on this pitch, it was a very good effort. India kept coming at us, but we picked wickets at the right time. Tredwell did well to take 4 wickets on that pitch. Its pretty much the same attack that we had in 2011. Hope the players can grow as the tour progresses.

MS Dhoni: ‘We should have got to the target. It was a fast outfield. Maybe I should have batted a few more overs. There was a situation in the middle when it looked like they would get to 340. The spinners bowled well. Yes, we were costly in the final overs, but this is a new batch of bowlers. If you don’t get your yorkers right, they will make you pay. We did not get convert the good start properly. With me and Raina in the middle, it did look real easy, especially with the new rules. Once he got out, followed by me, it became difficult.

Australia thrash Sri Lanka by 107 runs in 1st ODI #AusvsSL

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 03:45 AM PST

Australia thrash Sri Lanka by 107 runs in 1st ODIOpener Phil Hughes scored a debut century as Australia amassed 305 for five and dismissed Sri Lanka cheaply for a 107-run victory in the opening match of the five-game one-day international series on Friday.

Scorecard | Australia vs Sri Lanka Highlights 1st ODI

Hughes became the first Australian to score a century on his ODI debut as the hosts posted a big score after winning the toss against Sri Lanka in Melbourne.

The diminutive left-hander cracked 112 off 129 balls to help set the Sri Lankans a competitive run chase under lights at 6.12 runs an over.

But the Sri Lankans, despite being well in the match at 111 for two, self-destructed with three run outs and Clint McKay (4-33) helped bowl the tourists out for 198 with 10 overs to spare.

Hughes was the highlight of a free-scoring Australian innings with skipper George Bailey scoring 89 off 79 balls and David Hussey chipping in with a late unbeaten 60 off 34 balls.

Hussey, the younger brother of veteran Mike Hussey, finished with a flourish, plundering 21 runs off the last over from off-spinner Ajantha Mendis, including a six over long-off to bring up his half-century.

There were a couple of failures in the Australian innings with Usman Khawaja run out for three after setting off for a risky single and being sent back by Hughes.

Fellow top-order debutant Aaron Finch went for 16 and Glenn Maxwell was caught attempting to chip over the on side off Nuwan Kulasekara for five.

Paceman Lasith Malinga didn’t fare well on his return for Sri Lanka taking 1-61 on a pitch suited for batting.

Sri Lanka were travelling well at the halfway stage of their innings before Tillakaratne Dilshan (51) was run out by a direct hit from Usman Khawaja.

The Sri Lankans paid dearly for suicidal running between wickets with cover fieldsman Glenn Maxwell running out Angelo Mathews (12) and Lahiru Thirimanne (0) in consecutive deliveries in the 30th over as Sri Lanka slumped to 128 for five.

Mitchell Johnson (2-43) dismissed Jeevan Mendis (20) caught at mid-off and wicketkeeper Brad Haddin pulled off a diving catch to remove the danger man Dinesh Chandimal for 73 off 95 balls in the following over from McKay.

Johnson also removed Thisara Perera (four) and McKay claimed the last two wickets in successive deliveries.

Australia rested opener David Warner, skipper Michael Clarke, injured vice-captain Shane Watson and wicketkeeper Matt Wade, while Mike Hussey, newly-retired from Test cricket, was dumped after announcing this will be his final international season.

It is the most first-gamers Australia have fielded in an ODI game since January 1986 when Simon Davis, Dave Gilbert, Bruce Reid and Steve Waugh made their debuts.

The second game in the series takes place in Adelaide on Sunday.

2nd Test : South Africa wins toss, opts to bat vs New Zealand – Port Elizabeth 2013 #SAvsNZ

Posted: 11 Jan 2013 12:09 AM PST

Toss: South Africa have won the toss and elected to bat

Smith: We will bat first as it is sunny at the moment. The wicket looks reasonably good and we will hope to put up a good total. Rory comes in place of Philandar. The last one year has been good for us and the players have responded well.

McCullum: We would have bowled first. It is windy at the moment and our bowlers will look to exploit that. We have suffered tough loss in the last Test and we will look to put up a much better performance in this match. Chris Martin and Franklin misses out, while Colin Munro will make his debut today.

Teams:
New Zealand (Playing XI): Brendon McCullum(c), Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Dean Brownlie, Daniel Flynn, Colin Munro, BJ Watling(w), Doug Bracewell, Neil Wagner, Jeetan Patel, Trent Boult

South Africa (Playing XI): Graeme Smith(c), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers(w), Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel

Pitch report: Mike Haysman reckons this is a bowl first pitch as it is full of grass. On the other hand, Pollock feels that the pitch will get low as the game progresses and the captain winning the toss should bat first as it is sunny and warm at the moment.

1st ODI : England wins toss, elects to bat vs India – Rajkot 2013

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 10:08 PM PST

Toss: England have won the toss and elected to bat

Cook: ‘We will bat first. We have had two warm-up games. We have a young squad. It looks like a great wicket and we want to make first use of the wicket. Joe Root will make his debut. It is the first international game here but it looks like big runs will be scored on this pitch.’

Dhoni: ‘The wicket might remain the same and the outfield is fast, so chasing might not be a bad thing. We have to field well and the aggression shown on the field during the third ODI against Pakistan was good. It will be tough for the bowlers. Ashok Dinda replaces Shami Ahmed.’

Pitch Report: It is a flat deck. There will be a bit of carry with the new ball. There is an even spread of grass and the outfield is fast. The spinners will find some grip and it is a 300 plus wicket. The team that wins the toss will opt to bat first.

Pakistan Super League (PSL) to begin from March 26 #PSL

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 09:22 PM PST

Pakistan Super League (PSL) to begin from March 26The Pakistan Cricket Board will hold its first International Super League Twenty20 tournament from March 26 to April 7 this year but it is not clear whether any overseas players have agreed to participate in the event.

PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf said the response so far from the players and their agents contacted has been very good.

“We are hopeful that we will get a good turnout of overseas players for the Pakistan Super League,” he told the media at the logo unveiling ceremony of the league in Lahore.

Also present were the former ICC CEO Haroon Lorgat and the captains of the Pakistan ODI and T20 squads — Misbah-ul-Haq and Mohammad Hafeez — besides other top Board officials.

Ashraf said Lorgat had been appointed advisor for the league and was also helping sign overseas players.

Lorgat said it was a good step taken by Pakistan to launch its own league as T20 cricket clearly had a bright future in the country.

“T20 cricket is getting popular by the day and every ICC member country has the right to host its own league. Pakistan has done hard work and I hope with foreign players’ participation the outside world will change its perceptions about the country,” Lorgat said.

The PCB is reportedly paying Lorgat a monthly retainer of USD 25,000 for his advisory job.

Ashraf also announced that around USD 100 million would go into hosting the league which would be contested by five franchises representing the main regions of the country.

“Each region will be allowed six overseas players, 10 local players and two emerging players. After the first three years they are plans to increase the teams as well,” he said.

Ashraf said the idea behind the league was to exploit the popularity of T20 cricket in Pakistan.

“The other purpose obviously is to show the world that it is safe enough to play in Pakistan. We are hopeful once the super league is held the doors will open for international cricket to return to the country,” he said.

No Test-playing nation has visited Pakistan since March, 2009 when terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team in Lahore killing six Pakistani policemen and a van driver and wounding five of the visiting players.

The dates of the league are such that the Pakistani players will go into it immediately after returning from a tour of South Africa.

Ashraf also said a proper secretariat had been set up to organise the league and look after all its issues which is headed by Sarwar Salman Butt, a banker by profession.

He said that leading business houses of the country had shown interest in buying the franchises and players would be signed through a bidding process to ensure that the event was also financially lucrative.
