Cheteshwar Pujara unlikely to play in home ODIs against England : MS Dhoni #IndvsEng

Cheteshwar Pujara unlikely to play in home ODIs against England - MS DhoniProlific Saurashtra middle-order batsman Cheteshwar Pujara, who slammed his career’s second Ranji Trophy triple hundred on Thursday, may have to wait a little more to make his ODI debut, Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni indicated.

“Well it (ODI debut) looks very unlikely as of now because we have to see the whole batting line-up the position he’s ideally suited for and all those things. As of now, it looks very unlikely,” said Dhoni on the eve of the first ODI against England at the SCA stadium.

“Let’s see what happens tomorrow. If somebody gets unfit, we’ll see…,” he added.

Pujara, who notched up 352 in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal match against Karnataka, has played nine Tests with distinction for the country and has scored three hundreds and a fifty in his fledgling international career.

The 24-year-old cricketer has been included in the ODI squad for the first time in place of Virender Sehwag.

Instead of practicing with the rest of the Indian team, Pujara continued batting in the Ranji Trophy game after getting permission from the team management.

“As of now everyone is fit. I don’t know if it will change by night, but everyone is fit now,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni conceded that the lack of big opening partnerships has hurt the World Cup champions’ chances in ODIs off late.

Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir have struggled to cobble together sufficiently big opening partnerships for the rest of the batting line up to build upon.

“The stats suggest that for quite some time we have not got off to a very good start in terms of a (opening) partnership. Yes, the openers have been scoring runs on and off, but we have not been able to get a good partnership between them. One of them has been getting out. We are hoping to get good starts in this series.

Jinx (Ajinkya Rahane) is the new opener. He has played on and off and done decently well,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni, however, sounded unfazed about the criticism he and the team had to go through after a series of losses.

“It (criticism) is not something that’s new to us. As Indian cricketers, you know you are supposed to do well. The moment we don’t do well as an individual or as a team you know you’ll get to face a lot of criticism,” said the skipper.

“But it’s the same when you do well, then you get a lot of appreciation. I’ve always said it’s very important to be in a good zone as a team, because if you are in a good zone you have more chances of being successful and be able to perform.

“I never question my ability. That’s one thing that all the weaker persons do. Before others question you as an individual you start questioning yourself. Self-belief is something that’s very important. Especially in a team sport, it’s important that everybody keeps believing in themselves and understands the roles and responsibilities that they’ve got,” he added.

Reluctant to talk about giving up the captaincy in one or more forms of the game as suggested by some former cricketers, Dhoni said, “We’ll have to wait and watch. It’s not something that’s on my mind right now, before the start of an important series. We can’t be thinking about that now. Let’s wait and watch when we get some time off.”

Dhoni conceded that switching from one format to another in a short span was always a difficult thing to do but was happy that the team was continuing to play the five-match ODI series on the back of the three-game series that it lost 1-2 against Pakistan.

“It’s quite difficult when you’re switching formats, from the longer format to the shorter format. Getting into the T20 version is a different challenge altogether. But as an individual, at the top level, you are supposed to stand up to the kind of challenge that’s provided for you.

Preview : India vs England, 1st ODI, Rajkot, 2013 #IndvsEng

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 02:30 AM PST

Preview India vs England, 1st ODI, Rajkot, 2013Their egos battered after the debacle against arch-foes Pakistan, India hardly have any time to reflect and plug the loopholes but an inexperienced England attack gives the hosts a slight edge in the five-match ODI series starting at Rajkot on Friday.

The 1-2 loss to Pakistan had exposed chinks in the Indian batting armour, forcing the selectors to omit off-colour opener Virender Sehwag and replace him with in-form local hero Cheteshwar Pujara in the squad to take on England in the first three games.

The consolation victory over Pakistan in a low-scoring thriller in the final game in bitterly cold conditions was a desperately-needed shot in the arm for the Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men ahead of the rubber against England, which earlier whipped the hosts 2-1 in the four-game Test series.

England will again be led by their victorious Test skipper Alastair Cook but their bowling attack, without the presence of several key Test bowlers, appears inexperienced and could be just the tonic needed by the bruised Indian batting line-up to get back into the groove.

Barring Dhoni, who scored a ton and a half ton in totalling 203 runs in the three games against Pakistan, it was a collective batting failure by the Indian top-order in which Suresh Raina, with a modest tally of 92 runs with 43 as his best score, emerged as the second-best batsman.

Opener Gautam Gambhir, who escaped the axe in the aftermath of the series defeat, his Delhi teammate Virat Kohli and Yuvraj Singh were flops against Pakistan whose pace attack severely dented their confidence.

But against the less-experienced England pace attack, led by Tim Bresnan and Steven Finn, the same set of batsmen ought to flourish, especially on what promises to be a batting-friendly playing surface.

The old ground in this city, the Madhavrao Scindia race course ground, was known for its placid tracks and in the last ODI game played here in 2008, the England pace attack was hit all over the park by Gambhir, Sehwag and Yuvraj, who cracked a 78-ball 138 with 6 sixes and 16 fours in it.

That attack comprised of James Anderson, India’s nemesis in Tests who is absent from the ODI series, Stuart Broad, available only for the last two games of the current rubber, and the retired duo of Andrew Flintoff and Steve Harmison.

The current new-ball attack comprising Bresnan, Finn, Stuart Meaker and Jade Dernbach does not appear as lethal as the one that was smashed to smithereens by the Indian batsmen four years ago.

“It will be good to see the Indian batsmen getting some confidence back (after their poor display against Pakistan bowlers) and the track will suit the batsmen. Scores in excess of 300 are expected,” said a top official of the Saurashtra Cricket Association about the pitch at the newly built SCA Stadium.

It remains to be seen whether Pujara, who goes into the game with a triple century for Saurashtra in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal game against Karnataka, would be fitted into the eleven.

The England attack, which is yet to come to grips about the changed ODI rules vis-a-vis field restrictions, has come under criticism in its media following the two straight losses the team suffered in the warm-up games in Delhi against India A and Delhi and may find the track here devoid of any substantial help.

Off-spinner James Tredwell has emerged with some success in these games and England would look to him to make inroads in the middle overs at this ground where tall scores have been common in past Ranji Trophy games before it was officially inaugurated last Sunday.

In batting, England will depend a lot on Cook, Ian Bell, who seems to have taken a liking at last to Indian tracks by scoring a ton and a 91 in the two warm-up games, Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan.

In wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter and Joseph Butler, England have two other batsmen capable of taking the aerial route and get quick runs.

India’s young pace bowling attack of Shami Ahmed and Bhuvneshwar Kumar would be tested severely on this track after the bowler-friendly conditions they had played in against Pakistan. The more experienced Ishant Sharma needs to show the way.

Spin would be in the hands of Ravichandran Ashwin, whose form has been up and down, and Ravindra Jadeja, along with Yuvraj Singh, who has the knack of getting among the wickets against Englishmen.

The noon start for the game would also negate the effect of dew fall later in the day to a large extent.

The series provides a chance for India to redeem its prestige, while England can cement their place on the top of one-day rankings by winning. India also have the chance to shoot to the top of the order again if they can make a 5-0 clean sweep like they did in 2008.

For England, like it was the case in the Test rubber, a series triumph would result in re-writing history after nearly three decades.

England currently lead second-ranked South Africa by a fraction of a point, but will take an outright lead on the championship table if they win the series against India, irrespective of the results of the South Africa-New Zealand and Australia-Sri Lanka series.

Teams:

India (probable): Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (c & wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed.

England (probable): Alastair Cook (c), Joe Root, Ian Bell, Samit Patel, Eoin Morgan, Craig Kieswetter (wk), Chris Woakes, James Tredwell, Stuart Meakar, Eoin Morgan, Jade Dernbach, Steven Finn

Dravid suggests Dhoni to quit T20 captaincy but remain Test skipper

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 12:30 AM PST

Dravid suggests Dhoni to quit T20 captaincy but remain Test skipperFormer India skipper Rahul Dravid has thrown his weight behind the beleaguered MS Dhoni, saying that he is the “only man” capable of leading the Test team but should quit Twenty20 captaincy to avoid becoming “stale”.

“Not only is Dhoni the only man to lead India in Test cricket, he is still capable of doing the job well. What it will require from him is a change in the way he captains, a recognition that he can’t do everything all the time, and the willingness to ask for and accept help,” Dravid said. Continue reading below

“Dhoni has got to recognise that he can’t continue to captain and play all the time, because it is making him stale… To start with, Dhoni could easily give up the India T20 and Chennai Super Kings captaincies…He needs to take breaks between captaining and keeping and playing,” he wrote in his ESPNCricinfo column.

“He should certainly play ODIs and T20s for India, because he is invaluable to the side. Giving up a couple of captaincy roles might give him more time in the main India job and the freshness to keep doing it. It would also give India an opportunity to perhaps give someone like (Virat) Kohli a chance to be T20 captain, break him into the job and see how he goes,” he said.

Dhoni’s captaincy was criticised after India’s recent home Test debacle against England followed by the ODI loss to arch-foes Pakistan. Even though he is in decent form with the bat, several former players feel Dhoni has shown signs of fatigue as captain.

But Dravid believes India does not have anyone to replace the wicketkeeper-batsman, who led the country to the 2007 Twenty20 World title besides the 2011 ODI World Cup. Dravid also said that Dhoni should change his approach slightly.

“He has had a good run, and will be recognised as India’s most successful captain, and he now has a chance to extend it. Other than his leadership qualities, there is the fact that there are no alternatives to Dhoni at this stage,” he pointed out.

Dravid said opener Gautam Gambhir could have been a possible captaincy candidate but his lack of form in Tests has put a question mark on that. “At one point we felt Gautam Gambhir could take over the job. In 2008-09, Gautam showed he could definitely play at the international level and in all formats. His captaincy of Kolkata Knight Riders in the last IPL was excellent.

“Yet what goes against him today is the fact that he has not scored too many Test runs in the last three years, and he averages under 32. Also, unlike Dhoni, Gautam does not have a second skill to back up his batting, even if that skill is being an excellent slip fielder,” explained the batting great, who accumulated over 24,000 in international cricket for India.

“Still, Gautam’s batsmanship and experience remain very important for the team, and giving him the captaincy at a time like this would be a burden on him. Before anything else, he has to get his Test batting back on track. If he does, he still has age on his side,” he said.

As for promising Virat Kohli’s chances of leading India, Dravid said the youngster needs more time to evolve. “Virat Kohli is the only other alternative leader, and he ticks the box of being an automatic selection in all three formats. Yet I believe it’s a little early for him. At the moment, he is a growing, developing cricketer.

“I would love for him to get the job after the next overseas cycle is done, with the end of the England tour in September 2014. If he can keep his form and develop till then, it will be a good time for him to take over. He is a long-term prospect as batsman and captain, but giving him the Test captaincy at this stage might be risky,” he explained.

Dravid said Dhoni, if he still has the zeal, should continue to lead the side in its transition phase and quit when the side settles down. “Between the home series against Australia next month and the end of that England tour, there are 15 Test matches.

“At the end of those 15 Tests, if Dhoni can have turned things around for Indian cricket, have had a couple of good overseas tours, and can then hand over the captaincy to the next man, that would rank among his greatest achievements,” he said.

“He would have taken the responsibility of leading a team in transition and left it in a better state.” Dravid praised Dhoni for leading by example and showing tenacity in adversity.

“What I like about Dhoni is that he is a leader by example. We saw this in the Nagpur Test match – and not merely from his second-innings 99. In Nagpur, because the wicket was slow, Dhoni came up to the stumps to Ishant Sharma, who was bowling at 140kph.

“To do that was gutsy, because it had “break your finger” written all over it. Dhoni was willing to take that chance, and to me, in some ways, that shows leadership. Sometimes he promotes himself up the batting order at critical times – the World Cup final was a good example,” he recalled.

“He is willing to play through niggles and injuries. That provides an example for others in the team to follow. When he bats with the tail, he plays his shots, can improvise, and shows he is not there to protect his own runs or his wicket,” he said.

Cheteshwar Pujara slams triple ton ahead of England ODI series

Posted: 10 Jan 2013 12:04 AM PST

Cheteshwar Pujara slams triple ton ahead of England ODI seriesCheteshwar Pujara celebrated his call-up to India’s ODI squad by first converting a century into a double and then proceeding to notch up a sprightly triple-century off 356 balls on Thursday. His innings – coming off the back of an unbeaten 203 off 221 balls in the previous round – helped his state team Saurashtra qualify for the Ranji Trophy semi-finals.

Pujara, who replaced a struggling Virender Sehwag in the ODI squad for the first three matches against England starting on Friday at his hometown of Rajkot, achieved the feat in the quarter-final of the premier domestic tournament against Karnataka, just over 24 hours away from the first ODI. The 24-year-old began the final day on 261 at the Saurashtra University Ground, and eased himself past 300.

“My plan was to get some practice for the ODI. Once I was set, once I scored my hundred I was in a positive mood and our team was safe,” Pujara had told ESPNCricinfo.

However, Pujara’s ODI debut is uncertain, considering the effort he has put in for three days on the crease just before the first game of the five-match series.

Preview Australia vs Sri Lanka, 1st ODI, Melbourne, 2013Sri Lanka are banking on the return of slinging paceman Lasith Malinga to give them a fresh start in the one-day series against Australia, starting in Melbourne on Friday.

The explosive Malinga, whose unusual “slingshot” action makes him difficult to face, was keenly missed by Sri Lanka in their three-Test mauling by the Australians as he concentrated on the shorter forms of the game.

In missing the Tests, he became one of the standout bowlers in Australia’s Twenty20 Big Bash League with the Melbourne Stars.

Sri Lanka go into the series opener reinvigorated by the addition of Akila Dananjaya, Upul Tharanga and Ajantha Mendis along with Jeevan Mendis and Thisara Perera, who have been playing in the Big Bash League.

“I think it’s going to be a fresh start because there are a few guys who will be joining us as well,” all-rounder Angelo Mathews said.

“It’s very disappointing the way we played in the Test matches but I think we need to get through that, flush it out of the system and concentrate on the ODIs.

“Lasith Malinga is joining us and we have got more fire in our bowling department…. I think he’s the best bowler going around in world cricket at the moment in the Twenty20 format.”

Sri Lanka will be encouraged by their ODI record in Australia, with four wins in seven matches last year, while they claimed their first-ever series win in Australia 2-1 in 2010.

The Lions have also won their past three ODIs at the Melbourne Cricket Ground, boosting their confidence ahead of the five-match series after the 3-0 battering they received from Michael Clarke’s team in the recent Tests.

Selectors have rested Test men Clarke, Matthew Wade and David Warner from the two opening ODIs, and are fielding debutants in their top three batting spots in Melbourne — Aaron Finch, Phil Hughes and Usman Khawaja.

“We’ve got to concentrate on our cricket… whatever team Australia puts on the field that’s up to them,” coach Graham Ford said.

“But a couple of those names are real match-winners in their own right and it is a bit of a comfort knowing they’re not going to be around.

“We tend to prefer the short formats of the game anyway. We’ve got some really skilful one-day players.”
Only three rankings points separate fourth-placed Australia from fifth-placed Sri Lanka in the ODI rankings and the home side are going in with a much-changed squad and an eye on building towards the 2015 World Cup at home.

Australia T20 skipper George Bailey will lead the side in Clarke’s absence as he strives to fully recover from a hamstring strain, while Brad Haddin takes over the wicketkeeping gloves from Wade.
But there was no place for senior batsman Mike Hussey, who played his 79th and last Test earlier this week.

Hughes said he was confident that Australia had the quality to cope with a Sri Lankan attack boasting Malinga and spin dangermen Ajantha Mendis and Rangana Herath.

“The experience is there through state cricket even though it’s not there through international cricket,” he said. “You’ve got to start somewhere.”

Teams:

Australia (probable): George Bailey (c), Aaron Finch, Phil Hughes, Usman Khawaja, David Hussey, Glenn Maxwell, Brad Haddin, Clint McKay, Mitchell Johnson, Mitchell Starc, Xavier Doherty.

Sri Lanka (probable): Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Mahela Jayawardene (c), Angelo Mathews, Jeevan Mendis, Lahiru Thirimanne, Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Thisara Perera, Ajantha Mendis, Lasith Malinga,Suranga Lakmal.

Preview : South Africa vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Port Elizabeth, 2013 #NZvsSA

Posted: 09 Jan 2013 09:31 PM PST

Preview - South Africa vs New Zealand, 2nd Test, Port Elizabeth, 2013The New Zealand batsmen were subjected to a barrage of hostile deliveries from their own bowlers as they prepared to combat South Africa’s formidable attack in the second and final Test starting at St George’s Park on Friday.

“Now that you know the challenge, the intensity and attitude that you put into training has to be as close to a match as possible,” said fast bowler Chris Martin in explaining his team’s unorthodox preparation

New Zealand were blown away for 45 in the first innings of the first Test in Cape Town on the way to defeat by an innings and 27 runs.

The damage was done by South Africa’s pace trio of Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.

Although Philander will miss the second Test because of a hamstring strain, New Zealand’s batsmen will again face a formidable challenge from Steyn, Morkel, Jacques Kallis and Rory Kleinveldt, who will replace Philander.

“It’s hard to imagine facing Steyn, Morkel and Philander in the nets,” said Martin, “but as a group of bowlers we’re trying to lift the ante a little against our batters to make sure they get what they need out of training, a little more hostility, more aggression.

“If you walk away having trained like that you can feel more ready to deal with the fight.”

The first Test ended inside three days. While the South Africans were given three days off before reassembling in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, the tourists were in the nets the day after the Test ended in an attempt to lift their game before the final match of the series.

There is such a wide gulf between world champions South Africa and eighth-ranked New Zealand that the host nation will drop a point on the International Cricket Council rankings if they win the series 1-0.

They will only gain one point if they complete the sweep, whereas they will lose four – and New Zealand will gain the same number – if the tourists defy the odds and square the series.

New Zealand are unlikely to encounter conditions as bowler-friendly as they were on the first day at Newlands.

The St George’s Park pitch has traditionally had less pace and bounce than other Test venues in South Africa, although much could depend on the amount of grass left on the surface – and which way the wind is blowing.

An easterly wind off the sea tends to favour swing and seam bowling, while a westerly from inland usually means good batting conditions.

South Africa will again start as hot favourites. All of their top five batsmen are ranked inside the first 20 on the latest ICC ranking list, whereas the highest-placed New Zealander in the tour party is captain Brendon McCullum at 25.

Despite the absence of second-ranked Philander, South Africa have the number one bowler in Steyn, while Morkel is in eighth place. Martin, at 16, is the best of the New Zealanders.

Teams:

South Africa (probable): Graeme Smith (c), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wk), Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Robin Peterson, Dale Steyn, Rory Kleinveldt, Morne Morkel.

New Zealand (probable): Brendon McCullum (c), Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson, Dean Brownlie, Daniel Flynn, BJ Watling (wk), James Franklin, Doug Bracewell, Jeetan Patel, Trent Boult, Chris Martin.

Umpires: Ian Gould (ENG), Kumar Dharmasena (SRI). TV umpire: Rod Tucker (AUS). Match referee: David Boon (AUS).
