Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina helps India beat England in 4th ODI to clinch ODI series #IndvsEng

Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina helps India beat England in 4th ODI to clinch ODI seriesA rejuvenated India clinched the one-day series against England as the hosts rode on the batting heroics of Suresh Raina (89 not out) and Rohit Sharma (83) to fashion a comfortable five-wicket victory in the penultimate game and take an unassailable 3-1 lead on Wednesday.

Scorecard | India vs England Highlights 4th ODI

The Indians first restricted the visitors to 257 for seven and then overcame some anxious moments before overhauling the target with 15 balls to spare in a floodlit contest played in cold conditions at the PCA stadium.

Though the hosts had the game in control after putting England into bat, they conceded as many as 100 runs in the last ten overs with unheralded Joe Root (57 not out off 45 balls) and Kevin Pietersen (76) providing the late sparks with some lusty hits.

Captain Alastair Cook was another notable performer with a knock of 76.

But the Indians held their nerve during the run chase and it was ultimately Raina who guided the team home.

It was a creditable series victory for Mahendra Singh Dhoni and his men who had come under fire for indifferent performances in recent times, which saw the team lose a Test series to England and an ODI series defeat against arch rivals Pakistan at home.

It was Rohit Sharma, rated as highly talented but one who has seldom delivered, who turned the spotlight on himself as he grabbed with both hands an unexpected opportunity to feature in the playing eleven as an opener in place of Ajinkya Rahane.

Sharma proved his class with some delightful shots to lay the foundation for the chase and his show will enhance his chances of cementing a place in the ODI team.

Ravindra Jadeja hit the winning runs by taking three off Jade Dernbach to trigger off scenes of wild celebrations in the galleries and the Indian dressing room where the players hugged each other.

The two teams will now move to the picturesque town of Dharamsala for the last and final match on Sunday, though it has now been rendered inconsequential.

India lost opener Gautam Gambhir early but the left- hander, who has been out of form for quite a while, was distinctly unlucky to have been adjudged caught behind by umpire Steve Davis as replays suggested that there was no edge.

Gambhir tried to poke at an outside-the-offstump delivery off Tim Bresnan and the English fielders appealed for a caught behind which was upheld by the umpire. Gambhir was shocked and was seen shaking his head while walking to the pavilion.

The hosts could have been in more trouble had Pietersen not spilled a difficult catch of Sharma when he was on 12, with Bresnan being the bowler.

Sharma and Virat Kohli steadied the innings with a 52-run partnership for the second before James Tredwell struck for his team in his very first over by evicting Kohli for 26.

It was a tossed up delivery and Kohli drove it straight to the bowler for a simple return catch.

Local hero Yuvraj, who joined the action after Kohli’s dismissal, did not survive long as he fell prey to Tredwell, who trapped him leg before as he went for a pre-meditated sweep shot.

Sharma notched up his 13th ODI half century and celebrated the moment by spanking Tredwell for a six and a four off consecutive deliveries.

Sharma, who came into the team in place of an out-of-form Rahane, found an able ally in Raina who scored at a brisk race to put the pressure back on the visitors. The pair scored 50 runs off just 37 balls.

Just when they seemed to be going great guns, Steve Finn provided the breakthrough by sending back Sharma with a ball that dipped in sharply, trapping the batsman leg before wicket. Sharma’s 83 came off 93 balls and contained 11 boundaries and a six.

Raina was lucky to get a reprieve when he was caught by Cook in the slip but Davis signalled a dead ball as the bowler Finn had knocked the stumps over on his delivery stride, much to the relief of a near-capacity crowd.

Earlier, put into bat, England lost three wickets in quick succession in the middle of the innings after a reasonably good start, but the young Root unleashed a stunning counter attack to steer the total past the 250 mark, which looked doubtful at one stage.

Root, who clobbered eight boundaries and a six during his 45-ball blitzkrieg, and Pietersen were largely responsible for England’s recovery.

Spinner Ravindra Jadeja was the pick of the Indian bowlers with 3/39 while Ishant Sharma 2/47 and R Ashwin 2/63 were the other wicket takers.

England’s opening pair put on 37 runs for the first wicket before Ishant provided the breakthrough by evicting Bell, who perished to a rash stroke.

Bell decided to step out against Ishant but could not get to the pitch of the ball and Kumar pulled off a brilliant diving catch at the third man region.

Pietersen, who joined the action after Bell’s dismissal, started off watchfully and took some time to get off the mark.

The experienced duo of Cook and Pietersen kept the scoreboard moving with gentle nudges and pushes and did not take too many risks as they steered England past 100.

The duo stitched 95 runs for the second wicket before off spinner Ashwin came to the hosts’ rescue by dismissing Cook in what appeared to be a dubious decision by Sudhir Asnani.

Cook was wrapped on the pad while trying to play forward but the ball appeared to have pitched outside the leg stump line. Cook slammed 13 boundaries during his knock which came off 106 balls.

The departure of Cook triggered off a collapse of sorts as Eoin Morgan (3) and Samit Patel (1) perished in quick succession as England slipped from a comfortable 132 for one to 142 for four.

Suresh Raina: ‘Me and Rohit were trying to be positive. We had a good partnership. God has been kind, I was lucky in the middle. I got an opportunity and did well for the team. I was putting great effort in the nets, thanks to my coaches. Rohit was batting really well, he is a middle order batsman, but showed the character at the top of the order. Sachin had told us that we need to be number 1 fielding side. We have worked hard with Trevor Penny.’

Suresh Raina is the Man of the Match

MS Dhoni: ‘Overall it was a good performamce. We were good with the new ball. Most of the teams will look to save wickets in the first 10 overs. If you see with the fielders up, before the last 10 overs, we did really well. Even if the opposition gets 260, it is still gettable. Rohit Sharma is one of the most gifted cricketers. Unfortunately he hasn’t done well. It is a shame if he can’t do well. He is a natural puller. He batted really well. It was great to see that once he got to 50, he wanted to convert it into a big hundred. All the wickets except Ranchi had decent bounce. Glad that we won the series on sporting tracks.’

Cook: ‘I think the partnership between Raina and Rohit Sharma was great. We couldn’t stop the momentum. To get so close we did really well. It did nip around quite a lot during our innings. We knew that we could get to 250-260 if we played well in the last 10 overs. Joe Root is good at mowing the ball around. The way he handles himself on the field is great.’

Stat alert: With this win, MS Dhoni goes past Sourav Ganguly’s total of 76 ODI wins. Azharuddin has 90, the only captain ahead of Dhoni.

Rohit Sharma: ‘ I came to know (of my inclusion) today morning and I was prepared to open. We needed to build a few partnerships. Suresh finished it really well. Depends on the management (replying to a question if he wants to open in future). Feels happy to play a good knock in a series-clinching victory.

Phil Hughes ton helps Australia beat Sri Lanka in 5th ODI to draw series #AusvsSL

Phil Hughes ton helps Australia beat Sri Lanka in 5th ODI to draw series Phil Hughes returned to form with a century before Xavier Doherty and Moises Henriques took three wickets each to lead Australia to a series-levelling 32-run win over Sri Lanka in the final one-day cricket international on Wednesday.

Scorecard | Aus vs SL 5th ODI Highlights

Hughes struck 138 not out at Bellerive Oval but Sri Lanka were on course to overhaul Australia’s 247-5 until Doherty exploited spin-friendly conditions to dismiss three of the tourists’ top four batsmen.

Pressure from Doherty reduced Sri Lanka from 50-0 at the 10-over mark to 85-4 from 25 and the tourists never fully recovered, stumbling to 215 all out and a 2-2 draw in the five-match series.

Australia still have batting concerns despite Hughes’s second ton of the series, with David Hussey’s 34 the next highest score, but the team showed spirit in the absence of injured captain Michael Clarke.

Australia’s recent woes, which included a disappointing 170 all out in Adelaide and a shambolic 74 all out in Brisbane, looked set to continue when the home side crawled to 62-2 from 20 overs.

Hughes, however, overcame a slow start to rediscover the fluency he showed earlier in the series with an unbeaten 154-ball innings, hitting out with particular flair after he reached his century.

“Give yourself time early and you can always catch up later,” Hughes said. “It was one of those innings today.

“I had found it quite tough but luckily enough I got a few away at the end. We had wickets in hand and that was always in the back of our mind.”

Signalling his team’s preference to chase a target rather than set one, Sri Lanka captain Mahele Jayawardene opted to bowl first and handed the ball to Tillakaratne Dilshan for the first over.

Dilshan did not get to bowl in Sunday’s fourth match in Sydney – where Sri Lanka were on top until rain forced an abandonment – but he turned the new ball immediately.

He beat David Warner’s outside edge to bowl him for 10 and wicketkeeper Matthew Wade, pushed up the order to open, was trapped lbw by man-of-the-series Nuwan Kulasekara soon after.

Australia failed even to equal their dismal series average of 71-4 at 20 overs but made the most of the wickets in hand.

Hughes had a let-off on 20 when an inside edge from Angelo Mathews rolled on to the foot of stumps but failed to dislodge the bails. He gathered momentum from that point, adding 60 from 96 balls for the third wicket with captain George Bailey (17) and 98 from 102 with Hussey.

Hussey was run out by a direct hit from Thisara Perera after softly serving the ball back to the bowler but Glenn Maxwell and Henriques each scored at a run a ball to help Hughes keep the scoreboard ticking over.

Hughes now has two centuries from five one-day innings. “It’s nice to get a chance in one-day cricket,” said man-of-the-match Hughes, who played 20 tests before making his 50-over bow. “It feels like it was a long time coming.”

Sri Lanka were rolling nicely with Jayawardene driving and stroking the ball with ease but the opener, in his final match as captain, holed out to Mitchell Starc off Doherty for 38.

That started a rot from 57-0 to 77-4. Dilshan was caught behind off Henriques for a pedestrian 48-ball 19 and Doherty got rid of Lahiru Thirimanne for one before bowling the dangerous Dinesh Chandimal (6).

Mathews and Jeevan Mendis raised hopes of an unlikely win with 74 off 53 balls after Sri Lanka had hit a nadir of 113-5 from 35 overs but Henriques bowled Mendis for 26 and Mathews holed out off Mitchell Johnson for 67 in the next over.

The last five wickets fell for 28 runs as Sri Lanka were bowled out with nine balls remaining. Henriques finished with career-best figures of 3-32, while Doherty returned 3-21.

The teams now return to Sydney for Saturday’s first Twenty20.

4th ODI : India wins toss, elects to field vs England – 23 Jan 2013 #IndvsEng

Posted: 22 Jan 2013 10:07 PM PST

Toss: India have won the toss and elected to field

Dhoni: ‘The pitch has been under covers so it will help the pacers. The batsmen have taken up the responsibility and the bowlers are delivering as well. We have to continue that. We have been a side that relies a lot on part-timers but with Jadeja coming in, we have more options. I got hit on the thumb before the Ranchi game but I’m okay to play. Rohit is in for Rahane.’

Cook: ‘We have to get through the first 10 overs. It’s a lot cooler here and it’s more or less similar to England. We have to get through the new ball. It’ll do something initially and then become flat. Buttler comes in for Kieswetter.’

Teams:
India (Playing XI): Gautam Gambhir, Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Shami Ahmed

England (Playing XI): Alastair Cook(c), Ian Bell, Kevin Pietersen, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan, Jos Buttler(w), Samit Patel, Tim Bresnan, James Tredwell, Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach

Pitch report: ‘The pitch is nice and hard. The sun is beginning to come out. There is a lot of green grass and dampness on the wicket. The bowlers will enjoy it for the first 20 overs or so. It’s a win the toss and field first wicket.’

Kane Williamson: ‘It was nice to contribute in such an important game. The second half was good with the run-outs and fielding. The boys really stiffed up. I did cramp up a little bit, but got support from the other end. Just contributing to the team’s win was really great. Grant Elliott was outstanding.’

Kane Williamson is the Man of the Match

Brendon McCullum: ‘I am not going to underplay it, it has not been an easy tour. This will go down as one of our biggest wins. We probably had no right to win this game, but we kept things tight. Kane Williamson’s innings was as good as one I have seen. This is just the 4th game out of 20 against South Africa that we have won. Really proud of the boys. Everyone right throughout the tour has worked hard. I think that is the mark of a person who after conceding 17 in the first over comes back strongly.’

du Plessis: ‘We did not play well. They got 20 runs too many in the field. 5 run outs is not acceptable. More often that not, when you get into that situation, you should win it. It was an important ODI series for us, we want to be up there in the rankings. Losing Amla and de Villiers was a big loss. Williamson was fantastic, he showed how to play on this wicket. We will come back fighting and make sure our plans are good.’
