South Africa bowling has been the key to their success and with such a momentum they will look to end the series on a high as well. New Zealand batting has been the major disappointment for the team. Pakistan tour of South Africa biggest challenge of my career, says Misbah-ul-Haq #PakvsSA

Posted: 18 Jan 2013 06:45 AM PST

Pakistan tour of South Africa biggest challenge of my career, says Misbah-ul-HaqPakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq on Friday admitted that the upcoming Test and ODI series in South Africa will be the biggest test of his captaincy but said that his team is capable of toppling the Proteas.

“The coming series in South Africa is the biggest challenge of my career. But I am confident that we can topple South Africa in the Test series,” Misbah said.

“People didn’t rate us highly even when we played England last year in the UAE. But we surprised everyone. The secret of our success is the team spirit and unity we have built in the last few years in the team,” he added.

Misbah insisted that a lot will depend on the batsmen during their tour of South Africa.

“We have the ability to beat South Africa. But the batsmen will have to stand up and deliver. I know we have two or three batsmen who can stay at the wicket even in the different conditions in South Africa.

“If we can post a decent total, I know our bowlers are capable of delivering,” Misbah said after his team Sui Northern Gas won the President’s Trophy final at the national stadium.

The 38-year-old skipper also pointed out that South African tour would be even more challenging as Pakistan had mostly played their cricket either in South Asia or the UAE in the last three years.

“After playing in England in 2010 we only went to New Zealand. Apart from that we have played in the UAE or South Asia. So it is an incentive for us to prove ourselves in South Africa as well,” he insisted.

The 16-member Pakistan squad will leave on Sunday for a two-month tour to South Africa, which commences with a three Test series from February 1 in Johannesburg.

Pakistan will be touring South Africa for the first time since 2007 and Misbah felt while in recent series the spinners had won matches for his team, in South Africa the pace bowlers would have to prove their worth.

“I am confident that pacers like Umar Gul and Junaid Khan will be difficult customers to handle in South African pitches. And we have a top class spinner in Saeed Ajmal to back them up. We have the bowling to pose questions to the formidable South African batsmen,” he said.

Misbah, however, said that his bowlers would not be targeting any particular South African batsman.

“It is a team game and we always look at our opponents as a team. We take it session by session. Our job is to give our best and we will do that.”

Stating that he was under no pressure because of the criticism over his batting, Misbah said, “I’m used to it but I know I have a role to play in the team and I am sure my experience and that of Younis Khan will count for a lot in South Africa.”

‘Pressure will always be there on Dhoni’, Eoin Morgan #IndvsEng

Posted: 18 Jan 2013 06:17 AM PST

Pressure will always be there on Dhoni, Eoin MorganEngland batsman Eoin Morgan said that “pressure will always be there” on India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni as he has to shoulder the burden of expectations of a billion people.

“I think he (Dhoni) is always going to be under pressure.

He is the captain of India. He has 1.2 billion people on his shoulders. He is a captain of a massive nation. The pressure is always going to be there. Being back in his home town might even give him some pride to play for,” Morgan told the mediapersons here today.

Morgan said the pressure affects when you’re not doing anything.

“I think the only way it affects you is when you are not actually doing something. Once you are out there and once you get into the flow, other things become easier.”

“It is certainly different to what we are used to back playing back in England. Playing over here (in India), you get used to the surroundings that revolve around cricket. Cricket in this country is huge, it is indescribably big.

“Everything that surrounds it is fanatical. Again, at this stage, I am quite used to it. Even the trip from the airport to the hotel seeing the streets lined like that just for a team turning up was amazing.”

Asked whether Dhoni’s injury would help their cause, Morgan said,”You can’t pray on anyone getting injured. If you get injured then so be it, these things happen, life goes on.”

The Englishmen might have struggled against slow bowlers in Kochi, but Morgan said they when they put pressure against India when they perform.

Citing example of the Mumbai Test, Morgan said, “That pitch had both turn and bounce on offer. I think we underperformed in the last game and we have learnt some lessons that we need to go back to. The bottomline is when we do perform, we test India and as you could see in the first game we came out as a better side.”

On the series that is tied 1-1, Morgan said:”Yeah, we can do. I am massive believer in the first game of the series can be the most important because it sets the tone for the rest of the series. The first blow a bit like a boxing match. Every game is as big as the other. To go 2-1 up would be huge.”

Morgan also backed his bowlers who leaked 108 runs in the last 10 overs in Kochi that proved to be difference between both the teams.

“They came under a lot of criticism for the last 10 ivers given the fact that they were immaculate in the first 40 and set us up perfectly. I think it was just a matter of not executing our plans.”

With England hosting the Champions Trophy in June, Morgan said they were making a steady progress.

“Our records suggest that. The only blip we have had since Alastair [Cook] took over was the last trip we had here and we learnt a lot of lessons from that.”

Morgan said he was keeping his fingers crossed on his future in the upcoming IPL as he would decide after their team selection for the squad against New Zealand.

“I was fully centrally contracted last year. So again things won’t change and it will be assessed about whether or not I am in the squad from New Zealand if I am going to play the start of the season. If I am on the fringes, obviously things will have to be thought about quite deeply and we will go from there.”

“Yeah, I would like to be involved because I have learnt a lot from the IPL. But again, more so I want to be involved in particular this summer. It is two Ashes series and it’s what everyone dreams of,” he said.

India came back strongly in last ODI to level series and now will look to take the lead in the 3rd ODI at Ranchi. Its MS Dhoni’s home ground and is also the first international game to be played at this ground. All eyes will be on Indian Skipper, MS Dhoni. India have won the last ODI but skipper Dhoni still concerned about the batting. Indian batting hasn’t been the best in the recent form and looking at the past ODI Dhoni and Raina are the only one who are putting up runs for team India. Ajinkya Rahane, who replace Sehwag doesn’t seem to be in great touch and so is the no. 3 batsman Virat Kohli. One of these should make the way for man in-form Cheteshwar Pujara for 3rd ODI. Coming to Indian bowling, they performly badly in 1st ODi but came back strongly in 2nd ODI. They need to be consistent with their bowling. Indian fielding so far has been the major positive for the team. Each and every member of the team have given there 100% in the field.

For England, it was a very poor performance from the team who won the first ODI. England batsman were exposed first time in the series and they lost the match. Another point of concern was the bowling unit. None of there pacers were able to stop Dhoni, Raina and Jadeja in the last 10 overs. Dhoni and Jadeja scored 96 runs in the 10 overs which clearly took the game away from England. The pitch at Ranchi is said to be batting friendly which means the pressure will be back on bowling side. Both teams will be looking to win the match and it will be interesting to see who finally get it.

Sri Lanka crush Australia in low scoring tie at Brisbane #AusvsSL

Posted: 18 Jan 2013 01:25 AM PST

Sri Lanka crush Australia in low scoring tie at BrisbaneSri Lanka beat Australia by four wickets in the third one-day international in Brisbane on Friday to go 2-1 up in the five-match series.

Opting to bat first, Australia were all out for 74 runs in 26.4 overs with only Mitchell Starc (22 not out) and Xavier Doherty (15) managing double digits.

For Sri Lanka, Nuwan Kulasekara claimed a career-best five for 22 runs while Lasith Malinga bagged three for 14.

Sri Lanka wobbled early in their chase before reaching 75 for six in 20 overs.

Kushal Perera joined top-scored for the tourists with an unbeaten 22, while Tillakaratne Dishan also contributed as many runs.

Mitchell Johnson was the most successful Australian bowler, claiming three for 11.

Sydney hosts the fourth one-dayer on Sunday.

India vs England 3rd ODI : High scoring game on the cards #IndvsEng

India vs England 3rd ODI - High scoring game on the cardsBasu Dev, curator of the newly built JSCA International Stadium, expects the team batting first to score approximately 350 runs. India will take on England in the third One-Day International (ODI) here Saturday on what he calls a sporty wicket.

“I have prepared a sporty wicket which will have a true bounce. The bounce will not be too low or too high. It is a bit green too and will dry as the match progresses. I expect the team batting first to score around 350 runs,” said Basu Dev, who is a Jharkhand State Cricket Association (JSCA) employee.

Daljit Singh, chairman of the ground and pitches committee of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), along with zonal curator Ashish Kumar Bhowmik, were also here to oversee the preparation of the pitch.

“Daljit Singh saw the pitch and told me it is a very good one. One of the best he has seen in recent times,” added Basu Dev, who is a long-standing groundsmen of the JSCA at the Keenan Stadium in Jamshedpur which hosts Jharkhand’s home Ranji Trophy matches.

Preview India vs England 3rd ODI Ranchi 2013Propped up by the massive series-levelling win in the second ODI, India will look to keep the momentum going when they go into the third one-dayer against England here tomorrow, hoping that skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s first match in his hometown will prove lucky.

After they fell short by mere nine runs in a high-scoring 326-run chase in Rajkot, India came back strongly in Kochi to level the series 1-1 with a 127-run win, their second highest margin of victory against England.

The manner in which the victory came for Dhoni’s men gave a fresh lease of life to the struggling outfit and it would look to take the crucial lead going into Mohali and Dharamsala.

Another destructive innings by Dhoni (72 from 66 balls) coupled with Ravindra Jadeja’s unbeaten 61 from 37 balls set the momentum after yet another top-order failure in Kochi as England choked in the 286-run chase.

In the Kochi triumph, India finally seemed to have got the allrounder solution in Jadeja who came of age, brilliantly chipping in with 2/12 from his seven overs of left-arm spin.

Another positive was the failing middle-order batsmen’s return to form with the Suresh Raina, Dhoni and Jadeja notching half-centuries.

That Virat Kohli, going through a rare lean patch, showed some flair in his 37 would also augur well for India as the think-tank may not look to fiddle with the batting line-up, even as the poor run of Gautam Gambhir continues to baffle.

But come tomorrow, and it will be all about Dhoni when India play their first match at the skipper’s home ground.

The World Cup-winning captain has an aura about himself at the newly-constructed JSCA International Stadium Complex in the south-western fringes of the city, like Sourav Ganguly has in Kolkata.

“200 per cent I’m looking forward to it (playing at home). It’s a big thing for me,” the Ranchi-born wicketkeeper batsman, who has so far played 216 ODIs since making his debut in 2004 in Bangladesh, had said.

With Dhoni being in the form of his lifetime, the ODI in his home town could not have come at a better time as it would add to the fervour the match has already generated in the state.

Since the 2011 World Cup, Dhoni has averaged 83.28 at a strike rate of 92.39, with 11 fifty-plus scores in 27 innings.

Amid the Indian batting ruins, Dhoni has stood tall sometimes left ploughing a lonely furrow with little support from his fellow batsmen. He has aggregated 307 runs in his last five matches at a handsome average of 102.33.

The biggest praise for Dhoni has come from his English counterpart Alastair Cook who has described the Indian skipper as the best in the world.

“He is probably the best player in the world in these situations… He does it time and time again. He’s incredibly hard to bowl at and with that extra man in the circle, it’s very, very hard to stop on these flat wickets,” Cook had said after the Kochi ODI loss.

Having thrashed more or less the same side 5-0 twice (when they toured last in 2008-09 and 2011-12), a lot would be at stake for Dhoni’s men, under heavy criticism after suffering back-to-back series defeats to England (Tests) and Pakistan (ODIs).

Most of the Indian batsmen failing collectively has been the reason for the recent slide.

On the bowling front, Bhuvneshwar Kumar took down the English top-order early on in Kochi when he removed Kevin Pietersen and Eoin Morgan in the space of three balls in an outstanding new-ball spell.

The 22-year-old also showed fine stamina, bowling his 10-over quota at a stretch and was rewarded with his best International figures of 3/29 in his fifth appearance.

Bhuvneshwar will be the key in Indian bowling as the wicket promises to offer some swing early on, even as the poor form of Ishant Sharma may prompt the think-tank to bring in Ashok Dinda.

Ishant has been a shadow of the magical spells he produced in Australia, as he has been bowling too short or wayward, leaking runs at more than eight an over.

England’s hope for a double, and a repeat of the 1984-85 series, where they won both the Tests and ODIs, would largely depend on how Kevin Pietersen performs in the next three ODIs.

The middle-order batsman is yet to convert his starts (44 in Rajkot and 42 in Kochi) in the series.

Down 0-1 in the Test series, Pietersen had turned it around with a series-levelling 186 in Mumbai to help England pocket it 2-1, their first in 28 years.

England have not won an ODI series since then, as their last best performance on the Indian soil was the 3-3 result in 2001-02.

On a Rajkot-like batting-friendly pitch here, the opening duo of Cook and Ian Bell, who had put 158 together in the first ODI, will once again look to set the platform for the Englishmen.

In absence of Stuart Broad (heel injury), England are touring with an inexperienced attack. Their speed options are Steven Finn, Jade Dernbach, Chris Woakes and Tim Bresnan.

In the spin department, off-break bowler James Tredwell, after an encouraging 4/44 in Rajkot, will look to relish the Indian conditions, while Samit Patel would be useful with his left-arm orthodox.

Teams (from):
India: Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt and wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Shami Ahmed, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara Amit Mishra and Ashok Dinda.

Chris Gayle returns to Jamaica squad for Caribbean T20 series

Posted: 17 Jan 2013 11:20 PM PST

Chris Gayle returns to Jamaica squad for Caribbean T20 seriesChris Gayle, one of the most destructive batsmen in world cricket, is arriving at St.Lucia to bolster Jamaica’s chances of capturing the only regional title that has eluded them.

Talismanic opener Gayle will replace the injured Andre McCarthy in the line-up and is expected to play the side’s final match of the preliminary round of the Caribbean T20 against Combined Campuses and Colleges (CCC) Friday, reports CMC.

The Jamaicans have already strengthened their play-off chances by brushing aside Guyana and are the favourites against CCC.

Jamaica are hoping to advance to Saturday’s two-team play-off and a possible clash in Sunday’s final with defending champions and unbeaten Trinidad and Tobago.

“The Jamaica Cricket Association sought approval for Gayle to replace the injured McCarthy,” said a statement from the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) Thursday.

“The WICB Caribbean T20 2013 Technical Committee approved the replacement.”

Gayle was not included in the original squad because of his contract with Sydney Thunder in the ongoing Australian Big Bash League.

The big-hitting left-hander is joining the Caribbean T20 roughly one week after emerging from a run drought to hit the fastest half-century in the Big Bash tournament.

His presence is expected to lift the fortunes of Jamaica, currently second in the tournament standings with 13 points from 5 matches. The former Jamaica and West Indies captain was a key member of the Windies team which won the ICC World T20 trophy in Sri Lanka last year.

In his T20 career he has played 125 matches and scored 4,475 runs at a strike rate of 152.10

Gayle has scored a record eight centuries, and hit a whopping 316 sixes.
