Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera help Sri Lanka beat Australia by 5 wickets in 1st T20 #AusvsSL

Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera help Sri Lanka beat Australia by 5 wickets in 1st T20David Warner’s unbeaten 90 went in vain as Sri Lanka beat Australia by five wickets in the first Twenty20 International on Saturday to go 1-0 up in the two-match series.

Shot-making was not easy on the drop-in pitch at Sydney’s Olympic Stadium but Warner blasted an unbeaten 62-ball 90 in a brilliant display of controlled aggression to power Australia to 137 for three wickets.

Kushal Perera (33) and captain Angelo Mathews (35 not out) shone with the bat for Sri Lanka before Thisara Perera (19 not out) clobbered back-to-back sixes to see the visitors home with seven balls to spare.

Melbourne hosts the second and final match on Monday.

Australia were reeling at 53-3 in nine overs after opting to bat first on a tricky surface before Warner added 84 runs in 11 overs with Adam Voges (25 not out) to give the bowlers a decent total to defend.

The hosts lost opener Aaron Finch (one) in the second over when Kushal Perera took a diving catch at short cover after Nuwan Kulasekara had induced a thick leading edge.

Shaun Marsh (six) was sent back by Tillakaratne Dilshan’s direct throw while Australia captain George Bailey (11) did not last long either, leaving the onus on Warner to put up a fighting total.

Warner hit Kulasekara for a boundary to bring up his fifty before hitting Mathews for a four and a six in an eventful over in which Kulasekara dropped him at mid-wicket when the batsman was on 69.

In contrast, Sri Lanka were off to a flying start with openers Kushal Perera and Dilshan (16) adding 46 runs before departing in successive overs.

Dilshan was soon in his elements, bending down to play that audacious scoop shot off Mitchell Starc that sailed over the wicket-keeper’s head for a six.

Two overs after playing the “Dilscoop”, the right-hander sustained a nasty cut over his right eye but batted on with a bandaged eyebrow until Ben Laughlin ran backwards to take a spectacular diving catch and send him back.

Glen Maxwell removed Kushal Perera and Dinesh Chandimal to trigger a mid-innings collapse but Mathews stayed put while Thisara Perera struck successive sixes off Laughlin to score the winning runs.

5th ODI Live Streams India vs England Dharamsala 2013

We are into the final match of the series which started in November last year. England yet another time had a dismissal performance in ODIs against India in India. Looking at their previous encounter they have lost the series by 5-1, 5-0, 5-0 and now with 3-1 already. England will be look to finish the tour on high with a win in the last match. India have came back strongly after loosing the test series and leveling the T20 series. India lost the 1st ODI but since then haven’t given any chance to England to bounce back. Rohit Sharma replaced Rahane in last ODI and proved himself in the match. This will be the first ever international game at the Dharamsala ground and with India not gonna play any ODI cricket till Champions Trophy so signing off on a winning note would be memorable for the fans.

England have lot of issues to work on in the team. Besides the first ODI, there batting has been a major let down for the team. Ian Bell beagn the series with 85 runs knock but since then he only managed to score 1, 25 and 10. Alastair Cook too haven’t been the best of form like he was in test series. Kevin Pitersen did started off well but was only able to convert them into one fifty in the last match. Samit Patil has been a disappointment and with Keiswetter out of form , Jos Buttler will get his second game.

Preview : India vs England, 5th ODI, Dharamsala, 2013 #IndvsEng

Preview - India vs England, 5th ODI, Dharamsala, 2013A morale-boosting series win sealed, India would be aiming to finish with a flourish when they take on England in the inconsequential fifth and final cricket one-dayer at the picturesque HPCA stadium on Sunday.

A 4-1 victory might not heal the scars of a Test series loss against the same opponents but it will surely inject a fresh lease of life in Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s men ahead of their next Test assignment against Michael Clarke’s Australia. The skipper himself will certainly feel good as he is leading from the front and walking the talk of shouldering more responsibility upfront having successfully wielded his willow.

There is an old adage that ‘revenge is a dish best served cold’ and certainly the irony is not lost out when one considers the problems that the Englishmen faced whenever their caravan headed north — be it Delhi or Mohali.

Dhoni would certainly expect that the same script is followed to the ‘T’ when his side steps on to the field for the 43rd international venue in India. With the series already decided, the match is of academic interest but for the team management and the national selectors, there are a few areas that they would like to check out.

Cheteshwar Pujara has been eagerly waiting for his ODI debut and one would expect that that the talented Saurashtra batsman would finally get a chance considering that he has not been released for the high-profile Ranji Trophy final against Mumbai starting on Saturday.

Knowing Dhoni’s penchant for sticking to tried and tested combinations, it will be interesting to know if the likes of Pujara and Amit Mishra, who has so far only warmed the dug-out will get a chance to be in the thick of things.

The skipper hit the ‘bull’s eye’ with his ploy of sending Rohit Sharma as an opener and which certainly means ominous signs for Gautam Gambhir.

Gambhir is one player, who would like to make it count on Sunday simply because opportunities might soon dry up for the Delhi lad.

Ajinkya Rahane may have been benched in the last match after having an indifferent start in the first three matches but the youngster is expected to get more chances in the future.

If Rohit gets settled in the role of an opener and Rahane is given an extended run, Sunday might as well be the last chance for Gambhir in the limited overs for the time being.

Suresh Raina is certainly basking in the new found glory of being a good finisher and Virat Kohli will like to play an innings like the one in Ranchi to end the series on a high.

There couldn’t have been a perfect setting for the series finale as Dharamsala can be easily compared with Newlands in Cape Town or the John Davies Oval in Queenstown as one of the most beautiful cricket grounds in the world.

The temperature is perfect and with the bright sunshine beating down on the 22-yards, the batsmen are expected to do well but the open nature of the ground might help the seamers during the early part of the day.

A Bhuvneshwar Kumar might just revel in these conditions with his ability to swing the ball. Shami Ahmed, on the other hand, would like to make amends for leaking runs in the last game in Mohali.

Ishant Sharma, who is slowly and surely looking like getting into the groove, will also look to consolidate his place in the shorter format as someone responding to the name of Umesh Yadav might soon be back in action.

For the England team, they have nothing to lose and will come out all guns blazing as a 2-3 ODI series defeat would look much better than a 1-4 hammering.

It will also be time for Alastair Cook to introspect about what exactly has been wrong with the team in the shorter formats especially after excelling in the longer version.

Kevin Pietersen’s 76 was a bright spot in the batting line-up while Cook will also aim to carry on from where he left in Mohali.

England’s main concern, however, has been their pacers with Jade Dernbach and Tim Bresnan unable to figure out the right length to bowl in Indian conditions. Dernbach, especially has been consistently leaking runs.

The only bowler who has made some kind of impact is the lanky Steven Finn. He has extracted steep bounce and bowled in right areas to trouble the Indian batsmen consistently.

In all, an exciting contest is on the cards.

India vs England 5th ODI at Dharamsala will begin at 9:30 AM : BCCI #IndvsEng

Posted: 26 Jan 2013 02:04 AM PST

India vs England 5th ODI at Dharamsala will begin at 9-30AM BCCIThe fifth and final cricket one-dayer between India and England here tomorrow will start half-an-hour later than the scheduled start due to inclement weather conditions in the hill town, the BCCI announced today.

“The fifth ODI between India and England, scheduled to be played at Dharamsala on Sunday, 27 January 2013, will start at 9:30 am, instead of 9:00 am,” the BCCI said in a release.

The revised timings will have no effect over the length of the game as it would be a 50-overs-a-side affair.

India has taken an unassailable 3-1 lead in the series and the final ODI gives the host team a chance to test the bench.

England, meanwhile, would look to end the tour on a positive note.

Brendon McCullum: ‘Incredibly proud. The young team has shown great fighting character, especially after the Test series. To bounce back like this was very satisfying. We are without 4 or 5 of our best players but we have responded well in the ODI series. There’s going to be great competition for spots in this team. We were taught a lesson in the Test side, it was a chance to learn. The guys stood up and took their opportunities in the ODI series so it was a massive confidence booster. It was a big series for Kane Williamson. He is a very strong leader within this group. England is going to be a big series for us. We have to use this series win as a spring-board and continue the momentum against England.’

Smith: ‘NZ have played superbly this series. It was a good experience for our young middle order. I found a good mental space to perform (without the captaincy repsonsibility). It felt good and it was also a great chance for Faf du Plessis to learn and grow as a leader. We wanted to take it close and if it goes till the end, we always had a chance. To see McLaren bowl well and hit the winning runs was good. He has been in and out of the side and this will help his confidence. The Pakistan series is going to be an exciting series. The Test side has had an incredible year, but it’s going to be a big test for us to do well against Pakistan’

Smith is the Man of the Match

du Plessis: ‘ It felt like I was getting older. It was thrilling, very glad to see the youngsters perform. McLaren played the shot of the day to clinch the game. We didn’t play too well but we’ll take a win. Bowling in the death is a problem. We gave away a bit too much. We need a few steady heads in the middle order as well. Smith was there today but we need to learn from this and finish games. Smith is experienced and he knows how to do it. It’s a learning opportunity for the youngsters in the team. It has been 3 hard months for us. NZ played better cricket through the series.’
