Preview : South Africa vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI, Kimberley, 2013

Preview South Africa vs New Zealand, 2nd ODI, Kimberley, 2013Saturday’s victory over South Africa would have brought plenty of relief but the pressure will be on New Zealand to hold their nerve once more in the remaining two ODIs. New Zealand have never won an ODI series in South Africa, and if Brendon McCullum’s team can get it right on Tuesday at the De Beers Diamond Oval in Kimberley, it will be a memorable way to round off what has been a difficult tour.

New Zealand have only won three of 19 ODIs in South Africa against the hosts, and following the hammering they received in the Tests, a series win could be seen as a big step forward. New Zealand’s batsmen are often criticised for their impatience, and it is this trait that will be tested in the rest of the series. A chase of 209 turned into a mess after New Zealand lost their openers in ten deliveries on Saturday, and it needed a patient and simple approach from James Franklin to steer them to a one-wicket win.

Another such batting effort would not leave New Zealand much room to breathe. As Franklin put it after his Man-of-the-Match performance, the team is under no illusions. “We have to be almost at our best, if not our best, to compete with these guys. Particularly over here in South Africa, we don’t have a great track record here in one-day cricket, now we have got a real chance of maybe winning a one-day series.”

New Zealand’s top order was particularly shaky, and from 4 for 2 it was BJ Watling who held the batting together with 45 off 78 balls. It is this approach which New Zealand could do with from the first ball. So Martin Guptill, whose two-ball duck extended his poor run on tour since he stroked a superb century in the first Twenty20 on December 23, and Rob Nicol will be under plenty of pressure. The rest of the team should stay the same. After his superb debut 4 for 20 that helped bowl South Africa out for 208, expectations will soar from New Zealand’s latest fast-bowling prospect, Mitchell McClanaghan.

With AB de Villiers serving a two-match suspension for a poor over-rate in Saturday’s narrow defeat, South Africa will be without their most valuable limited-overs player. Already without the experience of Jacques Kallis and JP Duminy, the hosts will look to their openers Graeme Smith and Hashim Amla for solidity. The pair failed in Paarl, setting the tone for a poor batting effort. Faf du Plessis – who scored the only fifty of the match – will lead the side in de Villiers’ absence and Dolphins’ batsman David Miller has been called up as a replacement batsman.

South Africa looked a batsman short on Saturday, with allrounder Ryan McLaren batting at No. 7, so it is possible that one of the four frontline bowlers used in Paarl makes way for another batsman in Farhaan Behardien. Rotation was expected for this series, so Morne Morkel could come in for Dale Steyn who went wicketless in Paarl. For an inexperienced side, these two must-win matches now look a lot tougher.

Probable XIs:
South Africa: 1 Graeme Smith, 2 Hashim Amla, 3 Colin Ingram, 4 Faf du Plessis (capt), 5 David Miller, 6 Quinton de Kock (wk), 7 Ryan McLaren, 8 Robin Peterson, 9 Rory Kleinveldt, 10 Dale Steyn/Morne Morkel, 11 Lonwabo Tsotsobe

New Zealand: 1 Rob Nicol, 2 Martin Guptill, 3 BJ Watling, 4 Kane Williamson, 5 Brendon McCullum (capt/wk), 6 Grant Elliott, 7 James Franklin, 8 Jimmy Neesham, 9 Nathan McCullum, 10 Kyle Mills, 11 Mitchell McClanaghan

South Africa announce squad for first test against PakistanSouth African seamer Vernon Philander, who missed the last Test against New Zealand owing to a hamstring injury, has returned to the squad for the first cricket Test against Pakistan.

He replaced all-rounder Ryan McLaren in the side.

Philander had bagged the Man of the Match award in first Test against New Zealand in Newlands before he was ruled out of the second Test match in Port Elizabeth with a hamstring injury. South Africa clinched the series 2-0.

Philander’s replacement in the last Test seamer Rory Kleinveldt, and Jacques Rudolph will again provide the bowling and batting cover for the squad.

“We are very happy with the job that Rory did against New Zealand when Vernon dropped out while Jacques provides us with a lot of experience as the cover batsman,” Cricket South Africa (CSA) selection convener Andrew Hudson said.

The first Test match against Pakistan will be played at Wanderers in Johannesburg from February 1.

South Africa Test squad for first Test:

Graeme Smith (c), Alviro Petersen, Hashim Amla, Jacques Kallis, AB de Villiers (wk), Faf du Plessis, Dean Elgar, Robin Peterson, Vernon Philander, Dale Steyn, Morne Morkel, Jacques Rudolph, Rory Kleinveldt.

Shane Warne fined again for breaching Cricket Australia’s code of behaviour

Shane Warne fined again for breaching Cricket Australia's code of behaviourAustralian veteran Shane Warne was on Monday fined Aus$5,000 (US$5,250) for a code of behaviour breach in the domestic Big Bash League, his second penalty this month, cricket officials said.

Cricket Australia said Warne was fined following a disciplinary hearing into his failure to list himself as captain during the Melbourne Stars’ semi-final against the Perth Scorchers in a bid to dodge a penalty for a slow over-rate.

Warne had previously been issued with one strike for a slow over rate violation and a second strike this season would have resulted in an automatic one-match suspension.

“Warne was found guilty of breaching Rule 5: Laws of Cricket and Spirit of the Game by Commissioner Arthur Lodge,” said Cricket Australia.

The 43-year-old spinner was not present at the hearing and was represented by Melbourne Stars officials.

Warne apologised earlier this month after a foul-mouthed rant against West Indian all-rounder Marlon Samuels that earned him a ban and a Aus$4,500 fine.

He claimed 708 Test wickets in a celebrated career but has also courted controversy, notably when he was fined for accepting money from a bookmaker and sent home from the 2003 World Cup for taking a banned diuretic.

Faf du Plessis replaces banned AB de Villiers as South African skipper #SAvsNZ

Faf du Plessis replaces banned AB de Villiers as South African skipperFrancois ‘Faf’ du Plessis was handed the captaincy of the South African One-Day International team on Sunday after AB de Villiers was suspended for a slow over rate in the first match against New Zealand.

It was another twist in a tale of two cricketers who were schoolboy team-mates at the Afrikaans Boys High school in Pretoria.

Back then it was Du Plessis who was the captain of the first XI, although De Villiers was always the more obvious future star, playing for South African Schools in his last two years at school, while Du Plessis missed selection.

But Du Plessis earned a place on a South African under-19 tour of England in 2003 and was made vice-captain to Imraan Khan, who played in one Test for South Africa in the 2008/09 season.

De Villiers was playing international cricket barely two years after leaving school and was named captain of South Africa’s One-Day International and Twenty20 teams soon after Gary Kirsten took over as coach two years ago.

Du Plessis made slower progress, making his ODI debut two seasons ago.

But he quickly earned recognition as one of the leaders in a team environment — a reputation which soared when he made a match-saving century on his Test debut against Australia in Adelaide this season.

When De Villiers sought a rest ahead of a Test series against New Zealand, Du Plessis captained the South African Twenty20 team in three matches during December, and now he will be in charge for the remaining two one-day internationals against the Kiwis, in Kimberley Tuesday and Potchefstroom Friday.

Left-handed batsman David Miller was added to the squad to fill the gap in personnel left by De Villiers.

In addition to De Villiers being suspended, the South African players, already stung by a surprise one-wicket defeat against the Black Caps in Paarl on Saturday, will lose their entire match fee after it was found the home side were six overs short of their target even after time allowances were taken into account.

De Villiers admitted he had failed to ensure an acceptable over rate for the match, which finished more than half an hour late.

Match referee David Boon imposed the suspension after De Villiers pleaded guilty to the offence.

Australia recall Shaun Marsh for T20 series against Sri Lanka #AusvsSL

Australia recall Shaun Marsh for T20 series against Sri LankaTop-order batsman Shaun Marsh was recalled to Australia’s Twenty20 side on Monday, joining others who impressed in the domestic Big Bash League to take on Sri Lanka later this month.

Chief selector John Inverarity said Marsh was among six players in the squad who did not feature in last year’s ICC World Twenty20 event in Sri Lanka, where Australia were beaten by the West Indies in the semi-finals.

“Each of these six, Aaron Finch, Shaun Marsh, Adam Voges, Ben Cutting, James Faulkner and Ben Laughlin has shown outstanding form in the T20 format over the past two months,” said Inverarity.

“Their performances have been compelling and we anticipate they will take this momentum into the two fixtures scheduled for 26 and 28 January.”

Marsh was the BBL’s highest run-scorer, finishing with 412 runs, while Finch was player of the tournament. Laughlin was the leading wicket-taker on 14, closely followed by Cutting, with 13 wickets.

Cutting is the only player not to have previously represented Australia in the T20 format.

Inverarity said choosing the squad was difficult, with batsman Ben Rohrer from the Melbourne Renegades and New South Wales batsman Luke Pomersbach both in strong contention. David Hussey and Cameron White also missed out.

“We’ve just picked the best squad that we can,” Inverarity said.

“It was David Hussey or Glenn Maxwell and we’ve gone with Glenn Maxwell and some other younger players have performed better than Cameron White.”

He said Marsh’s form had been “absolutely compelling”.

“He’s batted brilliantly and we all know how well he can play when he’s in a good space and he seems to be in a very good space at the moment,” Inverarity said.

Australia play two T20 internationals against Sri Lanka, one in Sydney on January 26 and in Melbourne on January 28.

They have already completed a clean sweep of the three-match Test series but trail the tourists 2-1 in the one-day series, with Sunday’s fourth game rained off and the series decider to be played on Wednesday in Hobart.

Australia T20 squad:

George Bailey (c), Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, James Faulkner, Aaron Finch, Ben Laughlin, Shaun Marsh, Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Starc, Adam Voges, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
