MS Dhoni praises bowlers and fielders for win in India vs Pakistan 3rd ODI #IndvsPak

MS Dhoni praises bowlers and fielders for win in India vs Pakistan 3rd ODIIndia captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni today hailed his bowling and fielding department for notching up the face-saving 10-run win against Pakistan in the low-scoring third and final ODI of the series here.

Coming into the match with the three-match series already out of their grasp after losing in the first two ODIs, India struggled to 167 all out before producing a spirited bowling and fielding display to restrict Pakistan to 157.

“We didn’t start well. 160 wasn’t enough but I told the team that yes it is not enough, but the team should compete well.

“There was something for the fast bowlers in this wicket but the important contribution was from the spinners. The spinners did a great job but for me the men-of-the-match were the fielders in this game,” Dhoni said at the post-match press conference.

“Bhuvi (Bhuvneshwar Kumar) started well, then Ishant bowled well with a not-so-new ball. (Ravindra) Jadeja and (Ravichandran) Ashwin supported each other well too,” he added.

The India skipper said that the only positive to come out of the series against Pakistan was the hosts’ bowling effort.

“It is important to learn from each and every game and this is a young side and there is learning for everyone.

Bowling line-up was a big positive in this series. Yes, there was help for bowlers, but we bowled well as a unit,” said Dhoni, who was adjudged the man-of-the-match for his 55-ball 36 and leadership qualities in today’s game.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul-Haq agreed with his Indian counterpart and said India’s bowling and fielding made all the difference in today’s low-scoring thriller.

“Full marks to the Indians. They bowled very well and their fielding was outstanding. We tried to see off the new ball, but the ball was doing things even after that. It was difficult to score runs,” he said.

Misbah lauded the entire team, especially his bowling attack for helping the side win the three-match series 2-1.

“There were plenty of positives from this series, especially the fast bowlers and Nasir Jamshed. It was a great series, tightly contested and today we had another tight game,” he viewed.

Even though man-of-the-series Nasir Jamshed, who scored back-to-back centuries in the first two ODIs in Chennai and Kolkata, was pleased with his performance, he was disappointed to return home on a losing note.

“I started well today, but unfortunately didn’t last till the end. The pitch was difficult to score in the second innings. Thanks to the crowd, it has been great all this series,” he said.

Sachin Tendulkar scores a ton in Ranji Trophy quarterfinal

Sachin Tendulkar scores a ton in Ranji Trophy quarterfinalSachin Tendulkar, who has quit One-Day International (ODI) cricket, scored his 80th first class century for Mumbai in the Ranji Trophy quarterfinal against Baroda at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday.

The 39-year-old nudged one to long leg for a couple to bring up his 18th Ranji hundred.

He is now one short of the Indian record held by Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 81 first class hundreds. In Ranji Trophy, Gavaskar hit 20 hundreds.

Teammate Wasim Jaffer is batting on 130 while Tendulkar is at 102. Mumbai were 257/2 on the first day.

Sehwag dropped, Pujara called up, BCCI announced ODI squad for England series #IndvsEng

Posted: 06 Jan 2013 08:30 AM PST

Sehwag dropped, Pujara called up, India announced ODI squad for England seriesVirender Sehwag was expectedly dropped from the Indian squad as the national selection committee decided to include in-form Cheteshwar Pujara for the series against England, starting at Rajkot on January 11.

The squad has been selected for the first three matches and all the other members of the squad that played against Pakistan were retained.

Two other non-performers Gautam Gambhir and Rohit Sharma, however, held onto their places despite a string of failures during the past few months.

Sehwag’s axe comes on expected lines as he had managed to score only 238 runs in his last 10 matches with a single half century at an average of 23.8.

There were enough hints about his exclusion once the team management decided to drop him from the playing XI for the third and final ODI against Pakistan on Sunday.

Gambhir managed to stay in the team as selectors didn’t want to risk dropping two senior openers keeping the Test series against Australia in mind.

Sehwag has the highest individual score of 219 in ODIs and has tallied 8273 runs from 251 ODIs with 15 centuries.

But at the age of 34 with slowing reflexes and problem with the incoming delivery, it will be very difficult for the dashing opener to make comeback into the shorter format.

Pujara, who has been in terrific form having scored 761 runs in nine Tests with three centuries has also been a prolific limited overs player for India A and Saurashtra.

In the last edition of Challenger Trophy, he had scores of 158, 124 and 78 while leading the India ‘B’ team. He has so far played 61 List A matches having scored 2735 runs with eight tons and a whopping average of 56.97.

A look at the squad will suggest that Ajinkya Rahane will now get atleast three matches to consolidate his place in the squad while the selectors will certainly keep an eye on Murali Vijay after his good show against England in the warm-up game.

The bowling squad remains unchanged with the trio of Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed and Ashok Dinda having done a commendable job considering their limited exposure to international cricket. The experienced among the fast bowlers Ishant Sharma has also managed to hold to his place.

Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Amit Mishra are three spinners in the side led by Mahendra Singh Dhoni.

The selection of Rohit despite his repeated failures continues to baffle one and all as he has got more than 100 chances to represent the national team (ODIs and T20 included) but never delivered according to his potential.

While senior off-spinner Harbhajan Singh continues to be ignored, Zaheer Khan, who is nursing an injury before he was dumped, is also not expected to make a comeback in the shorter format very soon.

Squad: MS Dhoni (Captain), Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Ishant Sharma, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Shami Ahmed.

India fightback to prevent whitewash against Pakistan in 3rd ODI #IndvsPak

India fightback to prevent whitewash against Pakistan in 3rd ODIA spirited India clinched a sensational 10-run victory in a low-scoring thriller to avoid a series whitewash and restore some pride in the third and final cricket one-dayer against arch-rivals Pakistan on Sunday.

Scorecard | India vs Pak 3rd ODI Highlights

The Indians were first bundled out for a paltry 167 in 43.4 overs but relied on a brilliant bowling display under pressure to stop the visitors at 157 in a nerve-wracking day-night contest, held in extremely chilly and windy conditions.

Fortunes fluctuated from one team to the other till the very end before the hosts finally brought some cheer for their fans with the dramatic victory, which reduced their margin of defeat to 1-2 in the three-match series.

It was another poor batting display by the Indians who never really got going as the Pakistani pacers Mohammad Irfan and Junaid Khan caused early damages before Saeed Ajmal joined the party with a career-best effort of five for 24.

But the host bowlers made amends in the end to fashion the win.

The Pakistanis, chasing the small target, were in a spot of bother as pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar rocked the innings with the early dismissals of Kamran Akmal and Younis Khan, but the visitors recovered through a gritty partnership between captain Misbah-ul Haq (39) and Nasir Jamshed (34), who were the top contributors for Pakistan.

However, the Pakistan innings collapsed again, giving the hosts an opportunity to come back into the game.

A nearly fully-packed holiday crowd, defying the chilly winds which blew right through the day, turned up at the Feroze Shah Kotla and were lucky enough to see a change in India’s sliding fortunes.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni (36), Suresh Raina (31) and Ravindra Jadeja (27) got the starts but could not translate those into big knocks, though the heavy wintry conditions made batting a little difficult.

Ishant Sharma, after making a hash of a run out attempt, dismissed Mohammad Hafeez to bring about India’s triumph, triggering scenes of wild celebrations in the stands.

The win also meant that India avoided a series whitewash on home soil which would have been their first in 29 years.

The Pakistani innings began on a disastrous note as opener Kamran (0) and the experienced Younis (6) fell cheaply with paceman Bhuvneshwar claiming both the wickets to reduce the visitors to 14 for two by the seventh over.

While Akmal was trapped leg before with an incoming delivery, Younis was bowled by another inswinger as he attempted a loose drive.

But Jamshed, who has been in tremendous form with two back-to-back century, and captain Misbah played cautiously to steady the innings though both of them survived some anxious moments.

With the conditions assisting the quick bowlers, Dhoni chose to use Bhuvneshwar for ten unchanged overs and the young Uttar Pradesh seamer bowled his heart out, but could not add to his tally of two wickets.

The pair put on 47 runs before off-spinner R Ashwin provided the breakthrough for the hosts in his very first over by evicting the in-form Jamshed.

Jamshed paid the price for trying to play a pre-meditated sweep shot to a flighted ball on the off and middle stump and umpire Billy Bowden had no hestitation in adjudging him leg before. His knock of 34 came off 64 balls and had five fours.

Misbah departed soon after with Ashwin doing the damage while Shoaib Malik (5) fell to Ishant Sharma, who trapped him leg before. Ravindra Jadeja then accounted for Umar Akmal (25) with Dhoni stumping him.

From a comfortable 113 for three, Pakistan suddenly slumped to 125 for six to add some drama to the proceedings and raise hopes of a dramatic Indian victory.

Mohammad Hafeez, who came down the order, was dropped by Rahane off Ashwin, a costly lapse which prevented India from tightening their grip on the match.

A horrendous decision by Indian umpire Sudhir Asnani, who turned down a confident lbw shout by Ashwin, also did not help India.

Earlier, India’s top-order collapsed yet again in the face of some fiery bowling by the Pakistani pacers — Junaid and Irfan — who troubled the hosts in helpful conditions.

Pakistan bowled as a unit — the fast bowlers provided the start and the spinners carried on with the good work.

India owed their partial recovery to the partnership between skipper Dhoni and Raina. They joined forces when the team was stuttering at 63 for four and their 48-run stand for the fifth wicket repaired the flagging innings to some extent.

Ajmal broke the stand by trapping Raina and then scalped Ashwin in the next ball, which brought Jadeja to the crease.

Dhoni dispatched Hafeez for a six over mid-wicket boundary before being dropped by the same bowler in his follow-through later on. Dhoni smashed one hard, which Hafeez tried to latch on to but only ended up hurting his left hand. Dhoni was batting on 29 at the time.

The Indian captain could not cash in on the chance and was out to Gul when he went for a cut only to find Umar Akmal at point. His 55-ball knock featured four boundaries, including three sixes.

With Dhoni’s dismissal, India’s hopes of a recovery were crushed even as Jadeja came up with a useful cameo of 27 with the help of two sixes.

Junaid and Irfan tested the Indians with some short and fast deliveries and succeeded in subduing the hosts’ top- order. The Kotla wicket had some juice and the Pakistani duo made full use of the conditions to keep the Indians under check.

India left out struggling opener Virender Sehwag and brought in Ajinkya Rahane in the hope that they would provide a good start, which has eluded the hosts right through the series.

Rahane (4) was never comfortable and fell prey to the seven-foot tall Irfan when he edged one to keeper Kamran Akmal.

Jamshed: ‘The captain told me to play my normal game. I started well but couldn’t continue. The pitch was difficult in the second innings. It was seaming a bit. I enjoyed the tour, the crowd was great and it was good to win the series. I always enjoy my batting, wherever I bat.’

Nasir Jamshed is the Man of the Series. He scored 2 centuries in 3 ODIs.

MS Dhoni is the Man of the Match as well. He top scored for India with 36.

Dhoni: ‘We didn’t start well. 167 wasn’t enough. I told the team ’160 isn’t enough but let’s make sure that we bowl well’. The pacers bowled well and the spinners contributed too. The Man of the Match was the fielding. We saved close to 25 runs on the field. Bhuvneshwar gave us the vital early breakthroughs. Ishant made sure that he got seam movement as well. We maintained the pressure. Jadeja bowled well and supported Ashwin – Ashwin gave a few runs but there were 2 wides which went for 10 runs. We learnt plenty of things from the series. The kind of side we’ve got, I’m sure we will show improvement in the coming series. The biggest plus was the bowling unit. There was help for the pacers but we bowled well. It’s importance to score runs now. If we play a 50 over game like a T20 game, with 15 powerplay overs it is still possible to score more than what we scored today.’

Ashwin: ‘We thought we’ll give it a shot. The bowlers had a meeting in the break and we backed each other. The new ball bowlers bowled well. It got a lot cooler and the pitch became cooler as well. We made use of it in the evening. We needed a couple of wickets in the middle and we got it. A great morale-booster for the bowling line up.’

Michael Hussey finishes on high, Australia sweep series 3-0 against Sri Lanka #AusvsSL

Michael Hussey finishes on high, Australia sweep series 3-0 against Sri LankaMichael Hussey ended his Test career on a high when Australia beat Sri Lanka by five wickets with a day to spare in the third Test on Sunday to sweep the series 3-0.

The 37-year-old was deprived of the fairytale ending when his batting partner Mitchell Johnson scored the winning runs but Hussey, ever the team man, was not remotely concerned.

“What a place to finish,” he said after being applauded off the pitch by both teams.

“I couldn’t be happier. It was nice to be out there in the end. This has to be one of my top three favourite grounds in the world.”

Australia, chasing 141 runs for a series sweep, lost three wickets in quick succession just before the break to bring Hussey out for his final Test innings before retirement.

The break came with the hosts just five runs shy of victory and when Johnson pushed the ball wide of point for his only run Hussey (27) was already halfway down the pitch to secure the winning run.

Australia had dismissed the tourists for 278 before lunch to set up the run chase but they inched nervously rather than romped towards the target after David Warner had departed for a duck without a run on the board.

Seamer Suranga Lakmal had the opener caught in the slips by his captain Mahela Jayawardene but it was the spin-bowling of Tillakaratne Dilshan and particularly Rangana Herath that was always going to provide most problems on a turning wicket.

The peace of a hot, sunny afternoon at the Sydney Cricket Ground was punctuated by the loud appeals of the Sri Lankans pretty much any time the ball came near a batsman’s front pad.

SNAIL’S PACE

Jayawardene, so profligate with his appeals to the TV umpire in this series, made the most of his first of the innings to remove Hughes for 34 with Australia still 96 runs short of their target.

There was some confusion as to whether the Sri Lankans were appealing for a catch or lbw off the Herath delivery.

The TV pictures showed no nick or glove but did reveal that the ball would have hit the stumps so Hughes was despatched to the dressing room.

Clarke, the most prolific Test batsmen of last year, came to the crease for another duel with Herath, who took more Test wickets than any other bowler in 2012.

In the end though, it was the spin of Dilshan which removed the Australia skipper for 29 but Ed Cowan (36) and Wade (9) did fall victim to Herath.

With game moving at a snail’s pace, the crowd had already started chanting Hussey’s name before Clarke’s dismissal in the hope he would get out to bat in his final Test.

Sri Lanka had resumed on 225-7 looking to bulk up their lead of 87 and give their bowlers something to work with.

Dinesh Chandimal hit a defiant 62 not out off 106 balls but ran out of partners when Jackson Bird had Nuwan Pradeep caught behind for nine half an hour before lunch.

Chandimal and Pradeep put on 41 for the final wicket after Herath (10) and Lakmal (0) had departed relatively cheaply.

Australia won the first Test in Hobart by 137 runs and the second by an innings and 201 runs inside three days in Melbourne last week.

Clarke: We had to work hard throughout the Test match. Winning the toss and bowling first is not a great idea at the SCG. But we have had 4 quality seamers who were well supported by Nathan Lyon. It is tough to lose two fab players in Ponting and Hussey during a season. It has been a great honour to play with Mike, we will always remember him. We would have loved to win all 6 Tests but it was disappointing to lose the Test against South Africa at Perth. But, we did show that we had the quality to match up with the best in the game. 2013 is the year for Australian cricket and we have started on a winning note.

Michael Clarke is the MoS for his outstanding batting

Mahela Jayawardene: It has been fantastic, first time we were playing the Boxing Day and New Year Tests, the boys were looking forward to it. We played some great cricket, we will learn a lot from this experience. Maybe a target around 200 was ideal. Herath and Dilly bowled well, there was nothing for the pacers. There has been some positives, we need to invest in our youngsters. As long as they learn from such exposures, Sri Lankan cricket will be in steady hands.

Bird: Thanks for all the support out here at the SCG. It has been a busy 18 months, great feeling to be celebrating a series win with the team. To do so in front of the family and friends is great. It was nice to stick around and help Wade complete his ton.

Jackson Bird is the MoM for his 7 wickets.

Warner: We will miss Hussey a lot, he has been a man of perfection. The youngsters will have greater responsibilities now. I was happy with the way I batted, I felt that I could play very positively. We had a great summer, we perhaps had just one bad day in the series against South Africa which cost us the series. I am being given a couple of ODIs off, I would like to re-focus ahead of the remaining ODIs and the Indian tour. Nice to send off Huss with a clean sweep against Lanka.

Michael Hussey’s kids join him in the centre. He poses with them for the cameras.

Hussey: I am very delighted to finish on the winning note. I did not want to bat at all, amazing to be a part of the winning finish. SCG is probably one of my top 3 grounds. I will miss wearing the Baggy Green, I will miss all the boys in the dressing room. I would love to be remembered as a good team man. Thanks to the fans and all our supporters, Australia are going in the right direction and I hope you do well in India and in the Ashes. He also promises to follow the team all along.

3rd ODI: India wins toss, elects to bat vs Pakistan – Delhi – 06 Jan 2013 #IndvsPak

Posted: 05 Jan 2013 10:15 PM PST

Toss: India have won the toss and elected to bat

Dhoni: ‘We will bat first. The conditions are not going to change much. It is really cold and we have managed to keep warm. Nobody is unfit for selection. I had a sore back but I am alright. We need to win one game. Sehwag and Dinda make way for Rahane and Shami Ahmed.’

Misbah: ‘The weather is playing a big hand and so we do not mind bowling first. It is more chilly in Lahore than here. Everybody is fit. We are taking it one game at a time. Umar Akmal replaces Azhar Ali in the team.’

Teams:
India (Playing XI): Gautam Gambhir, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, Ravindra Jadeja, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Shami Ahmed, Ishant Sharma

Pakistan (Playing XI): Nasir Jamshed, Mohammad Hafeez, Younis Khan, Misbah-ul-Haq(c), Shoaib Malik, Umar Akmal, Kamran Akmal(w), Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan

Pitch Report: The temperature is about two degrees celsius. The pitch has been rolled in and it looks flat. The grass is evenly distributed but it looks dry. Wasim Akram says, ‘The pitch reminds me of the Gaddhafi stadium in Lahore. The wicket is dry and the team that wins the toss should bowl first.’
