India undergo rigorous practice session ahead of India-Pakistan 3rd ODI #IndvsPak

India undergo rigorous practice session ahead of India-Pakistan 3rd ODIWith only pride at stake after losing the three-match ODI series against Pakistan, the Indian team underwent a rigorous training session on Saturday ahead of the final match on Sunday with the spotlight on some under-performing players, including opener Virender Sehwag.

The full Indian squad, sans middle order batsman Yuvraj Singh, had a three-hour long training session under coach Duncan Fletcher at the Feroze Shah Kotla with under-fire opening duo of Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir having extended batting sessions.

Yuvraj was conspicuous by his absence in the practice session.

With the dense fog and bone-numbingly chill weather prevailing in the Capital, the Indian players arrived at the Kotla around 11:45 am. As soon as they came out at the ground, the sun smiled on them bringing a sense of relief to the players.

There was the customary game of football as some moved gingerly while others showed their ball-control skills. The short session set the stage for a gruelling fielding session followed by the nets.

The fielding session saw players having throw downs and slip catching practice in two batches, one led by coach Duncan Fletcher and other by fielding coach Trevor Penny.

While Sehwag, Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane, Ravindra Jadeja, Ashok Dinda and Dhoni were Penny’s batch, the other group comprising Suresh Raina, Ajinkya Rahane, Virat Kohli, Gautam Gambhir, Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar was closely observed by Fletcher as he was seen egging on the players to be accurate with their throws.

After the warm-up session, the batsmen hit the nets with renewed vigour and punished the local DDCA bowlers with their impressive shot selection.

The batsmen batted in pairs — Sehwag and Gambhir, Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Raina and Jadeja — with the Delhi opening duo, who face the net bowlers first, came back again after a half-an-hour stint.

Sehwag and Gambhir faced the local DDCA bowlers who bowled with accurate line and length. While Sehwag seemed to be in a defensive mode while also sharpening his reflexes, Gambhir looked more aggressive and sometimes took to the aerial route.

Sehwag was beaten a few times but he generally looked at ease against the pacers.

Few minutes later, Jadeja, Raina and Ajinkya Rahane joined Sehwag and Gambhir at the other sides of the nets and faced the local spinners.

After some time, vice-captain Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma took over as they focussed on running between the wickets while facing Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Sehwag and Gambhir came back later for their second round of batting and faced Ishant and R Ashwin respectively. The opening pair, who have come under severe criticism for not giving a good start for some time now, batted with positive intent as they put on show their full repertoire of strokes.

While Fletcher closely observed Sehwag, Penny took the onus to test Gambhir’s concentration level.

Meanwhile, Dhoni was seen involving in a serious discussion with Fletcher. They chatted close to 20-25 minutes before the Indian skipper padded up for his batting turn.

The three India ‘A’ squad members who were called at the nets — Ishwar Pandey, Mohit Sharma and Pervez Rasool — tested the Indian batsmen with their pace and spin.

While Madhya Pradesh pacer Pandey and Jammu and Kashmir right-arm spinner Rasool tested Kohli with swing and flight respectively, Mohit Sharma first bowled to Raina and then to Dhoni. Bengal paceman Shami Ahmed also bowled at the nets.

Rasool was particularly impressive while bowling to Dhoni at the end of the session as the Indian captain was beaten a few times. Dhoni also faced pacers Bhuvneshwar, Pandey and Ahmed.

Dhoni refuses to blame coach Fletcher, says players responsible #IndvsPak

Dhoni refuses to blame coach Fletcher, says players responsibleDuncan Fletcher’s role may be under scanner following India’s prolonged poor run of form but Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni on Saturday refused to blame the coach, saying the utmost responsibility for performance lies with the players.

Dhoni was asked about the role played by Fletcher as India have lost one series after another.

“It’s time that players take the responsibility. Coaches are there to guide us. If the player has problem in technique, coach can suggest. Coach cannot go to ground. It will be wrong to blame the coach. The utmost responsibility lies with the players at the end of the day,” Dhoni said at the pre-match press conference ahead of Sunday’s third and final one-dayer against Pakistan.

Asked if India needs a foreign coach, Dhoni jokingly said, “I don’t know. Desi aur videshi. Desi aur videshi to bas murge hote hain (Indian or foreign is meant for chicken only).”

Dhoni evaded a direct answer when asked if some new players, such as Ajinya Rahane, will be given a chance to play tomorrow since India have already lost the three-match ODI series.

“We have given chance to Bhuvaneshwar Kumar. We all know he is a good swing bowler. But we have not decided on the playing XI. Jinks (Ajinkya) has been doing well. We will feature the best side,” he said.

Dhoni nor only backed the coach, he threw his weight behind his under-fire colleagues, saying that the team was not lacking in talent.

“When you lose, you feel bad. When we bat well, we don’t bowl well, if we bowl well, we don’t bat well. We have talent but we have to perform together,” he said.

Vernon Philander injury woes ahead of South Africa – New Zealand 2nd Test #SAvsNZ

Posted: 05 Jan 2013 05:00 AM PST

Vernon Philander injury woes ahead of South Africa New Zealand 2nd TestThe South African team medical staff will again be keeping a close eye on opening bowler Vernon Philander in the lead-up to the second Test against New Zealand, starting in Port Elizabeth on Friday.

Philander, who collected his fifth man of the match award in only 13 matches after destroying the New Zealand batting in the first Test at Newlands, was a doubtful starter for the match after injuring his left hamstring less than two weeks earlier.

He felt stiffness in the same hamstring in the second innings and left the field before South Africa completed a win by an innings and 27 runs inside three days.

Mohamed Moosajee, the South African manager and team doctor, said Philander would be monitored closely, especially because it was a recurrence of the injury that made him doubtful in the first place.

With three Tests against Pakistan following soon after the two-match New Zealand series, Moosajee said the team management would need to be sure that Philander was fully recovered, rather than risk him aggravating the injury and then possibly having to miss most of the Pakistan series.

Philander, 27, has enjoyed phenomenal success since he made his Test debut against Australia at Newlands in the 2011/12 season.

In his first Test, he took five for 15 as Australia were bowled out for 47 in the second innings and he was again the main destroyer, taking five for seven, when New Zealand were dismissed for 45 in the first innings at the same ground last Wednesday.

He has had eight five-wicket hauls and has twice taken 10 wickets in a match. His tally of man of the match awards equals those of fast bowling partner Dale Steyn, who has played in 61 Tests, and batsman Hashim Amla, who has played in 66, although he trails long-serving all-rounder Jacques Kallis (23 in 159 Tests) and captain Graeme Smith (11 in 106).

But he has had injury concerns and has twice had to miss Tests — the second against Sri Lanka in his debut season because of a knee strain and the second in the recent away series against Australia because of a back injury.

If Philander had to miss the Port Elizabeth Test he would almost certainly be replaced by Cape Cobras teammate Rory Kleinveldt, who is part of the Test squad. But Kleinveldt could play as an extra bowler if Philander is fit.

Smith said after the Newlands Test that a four-man bowling attack, with the addition of Kallis, had been good enough to take 20 wickets. But he added that having AB de Villiers as a specialist batsman who also kept wicket meant there was room for an extra batsman or bowler.

“It gives us options,” said Smith. “We will look at the situation again in Port Elizabeth.”

Dean Elgar played as an extra batsman in the first Test but a scratchy innings of 21 and a dropped catch, which followed a “pair” in his first Test against Australia last month, did not advance his cause.

MS Dhoni doubtful for India-Pakistan 3rd ODI at Delhi #IndvsPak

Posted: 05 Jan 2013 04:27 AM PST

MS Dhoni doubtful for India-Pakistan 3rd ODI at DelhiIndian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni was on Saturday rendered a doubtful starter for Sunday’s third and final One-dayer against Pakistan due to a sore back, forcing the team management to call up Dinesh Karthik as the back up.

Dhoni said at the customary pre-match press conference that he developed soreness on his back during the morning practice session at the Feroze Shah Kotla ground here.

He was actually asked about the absence of middle-order batsman Yuvraj Singh at the training session and the skipper said, “If at all somebody is doubtful, it’s me. I have a sore back and we have called Dinesh Karthik as back up.

“Since it was an optional practice session, Yuvraj did not come,” he said.

Asked, who will lead the side if he does not recover in time, Dhoni said, “Let’s hope that I play. We’ll see tomorrow.”

The beleaguered Indian batting line-up could come under more pressure if Dhoni sits out on Sunday. He has been India’s top scorer in the series with a 113 not out in the first match in Chennai and an unbeaten 54 in the second in Kolkata.

Asked if it would be a setback for Indian batting, which has been struggling to put up decent scores against Pakistan in the first two matches, Dhoni replied in the negative.

“Nobody is irreplaceable. I am sure if Dinesh plays tomorrow, he will bat as good as I batted in the last two games,” he said.

“It’s important to back players. Yes, we are going through a tough period but we field the best eleven. If we go by criticism or by media, probably we would need 30-40 teams. Had I put myself under such pressure, I would have broken down by now,” Dhoni said.

A section of media had claimed that Indian team members, especially the skipper and the coach, do not speak to each other much after a match but Dhoni said it’s not like that.

“It’s not that we are not talking. We have meetings but having 15 types of different meetings does not help.”

Dhoni has been India’s batting mainstay in the series against Pakistan with an unbeaten 113 in Chennai and unbeaten half-century in Kolkata.

Asked if it would weaken the Indian batting further if he sits out on Sunday due to sore back, Dhoni said, “Our batting is good but we have not performed. No individual is irreplaceable.

“The new boys are as good, it’s just that they have not got enough chances. If Dinesh gets a chance, he will play as good as I played in the last two games. It’s important that our top order clicks.”

Dhoni hoped that the Feroze Shah Kotla wicket will behave the same in both the innings.

“It’s difficult wicket. It’s difficult to predict. But hopefully it will remain similar after the first half,” he said.

When a Pakistani journalist asked about his viewpoint on the visiting side, Dhoni said, “They have a balanced side. They play with five bowlers. Hafeez and Malik also bowl. They have more options and they are consistent. We have not batted well to test them.”

The Indian captain said that there was not much difference in ODIs due to new rules but India were struggling due to the lack of a fifth bowler.

India vs Pakistan live streams 3rd ODI Delhi 2013

Pakistan coming to the 3rd ODI with a clean sweep on the mind. India have lost the home conditions advantage first loosing the test series to England then leveling the T20 series and now lost the ODI series already. India will only think of a consolation win to get save some pride. Conditions in Delhi are quite chilly and it will definitely help the seamers in early conditions. Pakistan have a strong bowling attack and with Indian batsman out of form they are very likely to clean sweep the series. Looking at the bowling too, Indian bowlers were not picking wickets at regular intervals and there is no fifth bowling option for them. India have suffered a humiliating loss but can they save themselves from 0-3 defeat? Will Pakistan take away the series 3-0 played after 2008? A lot of question have raised about India played mindset and commitment in the field. Can they bounce back in last ODI?

Australia on the verge of clean sweep against Sri Lanka in Sydney Test #SLvsAus

Posted: 05 Jan 2013 01:00 AM PST

Australia on the verge of clean sweep against Sri Lanka in Sydney TestAustralia were on the verge of a four-day victory in the final Test and a series clean sweep after a Sri Lankan batting collapse on the third day at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday.

For a time it looked as if Sri Lanka, well beaten in Hobart and Melbourne, could make a contest of it as Dimuth Karunaratne and skipper Mahela Jayawardene almost wiped out the 138-run innings deficit with a century stand before wickets tumbled.

At the close, Sri Lanka were a shaky 225 for seven and leading by 87 runs with two days left with Dinesh Chandimal on 22 and Rangana Herath not out nine.

After lunch, opener Tillakaratne Dilshan failed for the fifth time since his 147 in the first Hobart Test when he was caught centimetres from the ground by Phil Hughes at third slip off Johnson in the seventh over.

Jayawardene then watched four batting partners depart as he tried to keep his team’s innings together, but upon his dismissal just inside the final hour it was all downhill for Sri Lanka.

Karunaratne edged Jackson Bird to wicketkeeper Matthew Wade for 85 to end a 108-run stand with Jayawardene in the 34th over when Sri Lanka were still trailing by six runs.

First innings top scorer Lahiru Thirimanne survived a leg before wicket review before he fell hooking Mitchell Johnson to Bird at fine leg in the 41st over.

Thilan Samaraweera completed a wretched series when he went after spinner Nathan Lyon and skied to long-on where Michael Hussey took the catch to a huge roar from the home crowd celebrating the Australian veteran’s farewell Test.

Samaraweera’s third-ball duck followed scores of 7, 49, 10, 1 and 12 in the three-Test series.

A dreadful mix-up led to Angelo Mathews being run out for 16 after he failed to beat the throw from David Warner.

Jayawardene was out four balls later ending his 200-minute resistance when he edged Peter Siddle to Michael Clarke at first slip and the tourists had tumbled to 178 for six and only a lead of 40.

Dhammika Prasad became Mitchell Starc’s first wicket when caught behind for 15 heading into the final half-hour.

In the morning session Wade scored a thrilling unbeaten century as Australia added 90 more runs before declaring to lead Sri Lanka by 138 runs.

Wade opened up in a last-wicket stand of 39 with Bird to grab his second Test century and gave skipper Michael Clarke the opportunity to declare his team’s innings at 432 for nine in the half hour before lunch.

Wade rushed towards his teammates in the Sydney Cricket Ground Members Stand and kissed his helmet after crashing Suranga Lakmal for a boundary to raise his century off 158 balls, after setting out on the third day on 47.

He was dropped by Prasad at fine leg two balls later going for another big heave before skipper Clarke called a halt with the declaration.

Bird provided staunch support to give Wade his chance to go after his against-the-odds century. Wade was on 70 when the fast bowler came to the crease. Bird remained six not out.

Left-arm spinner Rangana Herath finished Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-taker with four for 95 off 31 overs.

Australia lost the wickets of Siddle (38), Starc (2) and Lyon (4) on the third morning.

Preview: India vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI, Delhi 2013 #IndvsPak

Preview India vs Pakistan, 3rd ODI, Delhi 2013Battered and bruised by yet another series defeat, India’s struggling cricketers will seek to restore some pride when they go into the third and final one-dayer against arch-rivals Pakistan at Delhi on Sunday with the future of some of the under-performing stars at stake.

The collective failure of the top order batsmen even in home conditions has hurt the team badly in recent times and the hosts will need a huge spark of inspiration to prevent the spirited Pakistanis from achieving a 3-0 clean sweep.

Clearly, the pressure will be on the Indians who have been plagued by an inexplicable form slump of their star batsmen while the limited and inexperienced bowling resources have compounded the misery for the hosts who have now sunk to a new low with the recent debacles.

With the series already out of their grasp, the Indians may experiment by giving a chance to some of their bench players but whether they can change the team’s sliding fortunes remains to be seen in a day-night game which will start at noon to neutralise the dew factor.

Captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni, in good form with the bat, has been at a loss to explain the repeated failures and there have been suggestions that he should promote himself up the order considering the poor form of the top half.

The hosts lost the first game in Chennai by six wickets and the second in Kolkata by 85 runs to give their arch foes their first series win on Indian soil since 2004-05.

Unless the Indians put up a far better display, the Ferozeshah Kotla could be a witness another drubbing for Dhoni and his struggling men.

Ajinkya Rahane, who has surprisingly not played a single match despite his decent showing in the two T20 games prior to the ODI series, is almost certain to feature in the playing eleven tomorrow.

The two experienced openers — Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir — have invariably failed to give a good start and that has hurt the team badly. The Indians may contemplate benching either Sehwag or Gambhir and let Rahane open the innings.

The form of Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina has been patchy and none of them have shown consistency nor have they shouldered the responsibility.

In the absence of retired greats like Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid, the experienced players in the team have not shown the willingness to take the batting load.

Dhoni has acknowledged time and again that the batting has let the team down.

“Everybody knows it’s disappointing. When you are going through transition, you want your senior players to perform and groom the juniors. Once two-three wickets start falling, you need someone to soak up the pressure and consolidate the innings”, Dhoni said.

“But again our batting was disappointing. It’s important to have wickets in hand in the end. If you have wickets in hand, it’s possible to score 80-odd runs in the last 10 overs,” Dhoni said.

India’s bowling also does not have the bite to pose much problems for the strong Pakistani batting line-up which has been well-served by left-handed opener Nasir Jamshed who has cracked back-to-back centuries.

The trio of Ishant Sharma, Ashok Dinda and Bhuvneshwar Kumar neither have the pace nor the consistency to evoke any confidence while spinners R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have also not been in the of best form.

The absence of a genuine all-rounder in the team has hurt the Indians, particularly with the new rules coming into play.

The new fielding rules, which allow only four fielders outside the 30-yard circle, have made it difficult for Dhoni to use his part-timers like Yuvraj Singh and Suresh Raina for their full quota of 10 overs.

That has really handicapped the Indians who have always preferred an additional batsman with the part-timers filling up the fifth bowler’s slot.

The home team may toy with the idea of giving a chance to rookie paceman Mohammad Shami Ahmed and leg spinner Amit Mishra, both of whom have warmed the benches in the first two games.

While India’s cup of woes has been brimming, it is a totally different story for the Pakistanis who have found everything going in their favour.

The batting has clicked with Jamshed in stunning form while the experienced Mohammad Hafeez and Younis Khan have also chipped in with useful contributions.

But it is their bowling which has really made the difference, particularly the potent pace trio of Junaid Khan, Mohammad Irfan and Umar Gul.

Junaid has shown an exceptional ability to swing the ball and used the damp conditions in Chennai to devastating effect by ripping through India’s top order.

Junaid was impressive in Kolkata also where he got reverse swing going and the jittery Indians must find a way to tackle him.

Irfan, the towering 7 feet one inch speedster, has also proved to be quite a handful for the Indians, getting the ball to bounce disconcertingly while Gul has also been impressive.

In the spin department, Saeed Ajmal can prove to be a wily customer while Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are good at doing the containing job.

Pakistan captain Misbah-ul Haq could not have asked for a better show from his teammates who have outplayed the Indians in every department of the game.

“Indian batsmen are struggling for quite a long time. But I think our bowlers exploited the conditions better. Normally we get flat pitches here in India. But both the pitches — in Chennai and Kolkata — were challenging for batsmen,” he said.

Misbah is now looking for a clean sweep and it should not be difficult.

The toss may play a big role given the dew factor and the chilly winter conditions. The team which wins the toss, may opt to bowl first as dew may hamper spinners later.

Though the match has been rendered inconsequential, a full house is expected at the Ferozeshah Kotla with tickets being sold out for the Sunday showdown.

Sunil Gavaskar, Imran Khan blames IPL for India’s poor show against Pakistan

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 11:33 PM PST

Sunil Gavaskar, Imran Khan blames IPL for India's poor show against PakistanTwo legends of world cricket, Sunil Gavaskar and Imran Khan today held IPL responsible for the Indian team’s recent downfall, with the former going on to say that for some Indian players, national duty comes second to the cash-rich Twenty20 league.

Without naming anyone, Gavaskar questioned some Indian players’ complete focus on IPL.

“If you look at the events that took place immediately after the 2011 World Cup, you will know the guys who actually took their places for granted, those who did not make themselves available and preferred to play in the IPL and then go for surgeries,” Gavaskar said.

“I think those are the guys who instead of looking at India were looking at contributing for their IPL franchises.

If at all you need to take a rest, you need to take a rest from club matches,” he told NDTV, when asked about India’s ODI series loss to Pakistan.

Gavaskar also blamed the team’s batting department for India’s shoddy performance as the hosts gave Pakistan an unassailable 0-2 lead in the three-ODI series at the Eden Gardens on January 3.

“It’s the batsmen, they are the ones who are known much more than bowlers (in India). They are the ones who are responsible. Indian batsmen are terribly out of form since 2011 World Cup. They have struck form sporadically,” he said.

Gavaskar’s views were supported by Imran, who too feels that IPL has a big role to play in Indian cricket team’s decline in the past one year.

“Unless Indian cricket deals with IPL, unless you work out a balance between Test cricket and Twenty20 cricket and the commercial aspect of IPL, Indian cricket will go down rapidly,” the former Pakistan skipper warned.

Virat Kohli named international cricketer of the year, Pakistan team of the year : CEAT awards

Posted: 04 Jan 2013 10:42 PM PST

Virat Kohli named international cricketer of the year, Pakistan team of the yearYoung India batsman Virat Kohli bagged the International Cricketer of the Year award while Pakistan was named as the Best International Cricket Team in the 2011-2012 season at the CEAT cricket awards at New Delhi.

Kohli, also the Vice Captain of the side, beat the likes of Australian captain Michael Clarke, former Sri Lanka captain Kumar Sangakkara and consistent South African opener Hashim Amla to clinch the top honour at a glittering function.

Kohli, however, could not make it to the event and former Pakistan captain and bowling legend Wasim Akram collected the award on his behalf.

“He is a special player. One of the best batsmen and fielder in the world cricket. He should be groomed as the next T20 captain of the Indian team. He is the right choice for the position,” said Akram of Kohli.

Akram also collected the award on behalf of the Pakistan team and said, “It’s an honour for me to collect this award on behalf of the team, They really played some good cricket this season and I congratulate them for emerging the winner.”

Another former Pakistan batting great Zaheer Abbas received the Lifetime Achievement Award.

In the special India-Pakistan award category, legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar lifted the Best Test Batsman trophy while former Pakistan skipper Inzamam-ul-Haq was honoured with the Best ODI Batsman award.

The 1983 India’s World Cup winning captain Kapil Dev was adjudged the Best Test bowler, Akram received the award Best ODI bowler award.

CEAT Audience Choice Awards 2011-2012 went jointly to former Pakistan opener Saeed Anwar and Indian opener Virender Sehwag.

Kapil, while awarding the International Best Cricket Team award to Pakistan said, “They deserve the award as they played good cricket.”

Asked about Indian team’s dismal show against Pakistan in the ongoing series, Kapil said it would be better to not talk on the issue.

“If we don’t talk about it, it would be better for us. I just hope that on Sunday (third ODI at the Feroze Shah Kotla) we see better cricket. The Indian team has the reputation of making a comeback so I just hope they play well.

“I would just like to congratulate the Pakistan time for playing a fantastic cricket. They have a fantastic bowling line-up and there batsmen are also coming good. You deserve to win,” he said.”

Kapil, while getting nostalgic about the Indo-Pak rivalry, said, “Whenever you entered the field, you just wanted to win. It was like just go there and win. I can’t explain in words the rivalry between the two nations.

Sometimes the pressure situation, the tense atmosphere didn’t let you to play the natural game.”

The first-ever CEAT young Indian cricketer of the year award was received by India U-19 World Cup winning captain Unmukt Chand, who collected the trophy from Gavaskar.

“I am happy to have been chosen for this award. That was a special win for all of us. That particular day when I lifted the World Cup trophy was a special moment.”

Former Pakistan captains Saeed Anwar, Rameez Raja and Inzamam along with Kapil, Ajay Jadeja, Gavaskar and Yashpal Sharma graced the occasion.

Ramiz and Shonali Nagrani played perfect host to the evening reminding the present dignitaries of the excitement attached to the Indo-Pak rivalry over the years.
