Preview Australia vs Sri Lanka, 3rd Test, Sydney (SCG), 2013Australia captain Michael Clarke vowed to strive for a 3-0 clean sweep against Sri Lanka in the final Test starting Thursday to give retiring batsman Michael Hussey a fitting send-off. Clarke has opted for a four-man pace attack after Australia’s crushing innings victory against the tourists in last week’s second Test at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Mitchell Starc returns after being rested, joining quicks Peter Siddle, Jackson Bird, and MCG man-of-the-match Mitchell Johnson on a green Sydney wicket. Clarke declared himself fit and will bat at four in place of Shane Watson, ruled out with a calf injury. Continue reading below

All-rounder Glenn Maxwell was named 12th man, meaning Usman Khawaja misses out. Although a dead rubber, Clarke said the game had taken on special significance after veteran middle-order batsman Hussey declared it would be his final Test, with the squad determined to see him off with a flourish.

“When guys retire, it’s extra special to get a win in that last game for them and I’m certain this Test match will be no different in regards to Michael Hussey,” Clarke said. “I think a lot of guys will be emotional that Mr Cricket’s finishing up in Test match cricket after this game… we want to make sure that we send him out on a high,” he added. “Our focus is to win this Test match and to have beaten Sri Lanka 3-0 in this series.”

Clarke said his own hunger for success had increased with news of Hussey’s retirement and he was confident of a big score after making 106 in Melbourne, adding his hamstring had improved. The skipper said he also hoped that Hussey, 37, who has been in exceptional form, averaging 180.00 in the past two Tests, would make one final Test ton.

Hussey is the second experienced hand to vacate Australia’s middle order this summer, with Ricky Ponting recently calling time on his 17-year career. The departures come ahead of a critical 12 months for Australia, with a tour of India starting in February followed by Ashes series in England and Australia.

Clarke denied there was new pressure on him with the loss of Ponting and Hussey. He predicted a new generation of leaders would emerge in the squad. “I think over the next 12 months, you’ll see these young players stand up, because they’re ready for it,” he said.”They look forward to this challenge, as I do, and I don’t think my role [as captain] will change too much at all.”

Sri Lanka, despite being humbled by an innings and 201 runs inside three days in the second Test in Melbourne, can still hold onto the hope of claiming a first Test victory in Australia on what should be the most spin-friendly of the three tracks.

Sri Lanka’s battered and bruised tour party, by contrast, have had to call for reinforcements after injuries ruled out batsman Kumar Sangakkara and bowler Chanaka Welagedera and put serious doubt over wicketkeeper Prasanna Jayawardene and seamer Nuwan Kulasekara. Still, batsman Thilan Samaraweera said they were motivated by the chance of making a little bit of cricketing history.

“It was really hard to digest that defeat … but that’s the past now,” batsman Thilan Samaraweera said on Monday. “The good thing is this team has to believe they can make history if they win one Test in Australia. That is the kind of attitude we are taking into the New Year’s Test.”

Indian batting has been a problem, admits MS Dhoni #IndvsPak

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 06:15 AM PST

Indian batting has been a problem, admits MS DhoniAhead of the crucial second One-Day International against Pakistan at the Eden Gardens, India skipper MS Dhoni admitted that batting was a “concern” and hoped his batsmen would come good in the match on Thursday.

“It is a must-win game for us and obviously we are under a bit of pressure, especially when it is a short series. Our batting has been a problem. That is one area that we need to come good in. It is the right time for our batters to come back to form,” Dhoni told mediapersons on the match-eve.

Dhoni also said that the team was going through a transition period as some of the legends, including Sachin Tendulkar, had bowed out.

“The team is going through a transition period, some of our frontline bowlers are injured and we have an inexperience bowling line up. However, I am not worried, we need to do the basics right,” said Dhoni.

With new rules by the ICC for ODIs introduced in the series, Dhoni said it was important for the team to play according to merit instead of going for big shots. Under the new rules, a maximum of four fielders are allowed to man the boundaries at any stage of the 50-over contest.

“With just four fielders outside the circle, there can be temptation to play big shots which can eventually lead to wickets. So it is imperative that we play the ball according to its merit. We need to keep wickets in hand and not think too much about big scores. It is important that we play according to what the situation demands.”

The captain, however, was quick to back his batsmen.

“We have done well in the shorter formats of the game and it would be unfair to blame the batsmen just on the basis of the last game,” said Dhoni.

Dhoni, who has persisted in playing with four frontline bowlers and seven batsmen, also defended his decision.

“Had there not been a seventh batsman we could have ended under 120 in the last game. It is more like a catch-22 situation where you want to play five bowlers but also want a seventh batsman. However, it is imperative that our part-time bowlers bowl smartly and not give away easy runs,” he said.

Dhoni also said that he was not perturbed about former players criticising his captaincy.

“You have to respect what others say but my job is to play and guide the youngsters. We are more concerned about winning tomorrow than criticisms.”

Pakistan leading the three match ODI series by 1-0 will look for a series win when they take the field at there favorite ground, Eden Gardens at Kolkata. Pakistan haven’t lost a game at Eden Gardens and will look for the same result in the second ODI of the series as well. Aside from 6 wickets win against India in last ODI Pakistan have won only 6 ODIs in the year 2012. Pakistan will definitely look to change that in this year. Pakistan have a far superior bowling attack with Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan leading from the front then enters Umar Gul and the No. 1 and 2 ranked ODI bowlers, Saeed Ajmal and Mohammad Hafeez. Indian batting have been the serious issue and loosing games at home conditions is a sign of worry for them. They need to score runs if they look to level the series at Eden Gardens.

India will bounce back against Pakistan: Sachin Tendulkar #IndvsPak

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 03:19 AM PST

India will bounce back against Pakistan Sachin TendulkarSachin Tendulkar might have called time on his limited-overs career but he says his heart is still with the team and exuded confidence that India would bounce back in the ODI series against arch-rivals Pakistan.

“Even though I am not part of the team now, my heart is always with the team. I will support the team all the way. And I have no doubt that the team is going to bounce back in the series,” Tendulkar said during his first interaction with the media after his retirement from ODIs.

“The team needs good wishes and support from all of us. They need good feedback from everybody so that they can play good cricket,” he said, while also offering the countrymen good wishes in the new year.”

“Now 2013 has set in and I would like to wish the people of this country happiness and good health,” he added.

Tendulkar, who has been holidaying here with his family, thanked fans for the support he got throughout his long career.

“It has been a fantastic journey for the last 23 years and I would like to thank everybody for their support. They have supported me in the ups and downs of my career. It means a lot to me. So, it has been a memorable journey,” he said.

Asked about his holidaying here, Tendulkar said, “For the last 23 years, the cricket schedule has been very tight and I could get just a few occasions to spend time with the family. Here I was able to have long walk and appreciate how beautiful the country is and how fabulous the place is.”

“I have my privacy here and I thanked the media for this. I played badminton, table tennis, tennis ball cricket also and watched cricket on television,” he said when asked how he had spent his time during the holiday.

Tendulkar has been holidaying in this north Indian resort town with wife Anjali, son Arjun and daughter Sara since December 23 just after announcing his ODI retirement.

Preview: India vs Pakistan, 2nd ODI, Eden Gardens, Kolkata, 2013 #IndvsPak

Posted: 02 Jan 2013 12:03 AM PST

Preview India vs Pakistan, 2nd ODI, Eden Gardens, Kolkata, 2013Wrecked by Pakistani seamers in their opening ODI match, India’s under-fire cricketers will have to pull themselves up against the arch rivals when they clash in a must-win second cricket one-dayer at Kolkata on Wednesday.

Pakistan pacer Junaid Khan had sucked the life out of Indian batting when his fiery spell of four for 43 in Chennai mopped up the top order and eventually set up a six-wicket victory for his team.

None of the top five batsmen could even reach a double digit figure and if it would not have been for skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s heroic unbeaten 113, things would have been more embarrassing for the hosts who are trailing the three-match series 0-1.

Another defeat tomorrow would mean India’s second series loss in less than a fortnight after England recorded their first Test series win (2-1) on Indian soil in 28 years.

With odds heavily stacked against them at Eden Gardens, a struggling India will be under tremendous pressure tomorrow to keep the three-match series alive.

It remains to be seen how captain Dhoni makes the famed top-order click with both Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir struggling to give a good start to the team.

In absence of retired ODI batsman Sachin Tendulkar, senior pro Sehwag is yet to take up the challenge and lead the batting from the front.

Sehwag had a poor 2012, accumulating 217 from 10 matches.

Barring a 96 against Sri Lanka last year, he’s yet to fire since his record-breaking 219 in December 2011.

The Sehwag conundrum is hurting India’s cause and the Delhi opener will need to come up with a sizzling innings to give India a dazzling start, something that more often than not translates into a big win.

Considering that Sehwag, who did not play the T20Is, specially figured in India’s ODI scheme of things, his return to form will be the need of the hour.

“When the senior player like Sehwag comes into the side, when he is specially picked for the series, he needs a go ahead,” Dhoni said indicating that Sehwag will remain at his slot.

Virat Kohli too is going through a mini-slump and it has only added to India’s misery. Kohli had injured his foot in Chennai and there’s a cloud of uncertainty over him but India would want the promising right-hander to be back in his usual number three.

Barring Yuvraj Singh who had set up India’s series-levelling T20 International win in Ahmedabad with his 36-ball 72, India’s batting has been a picture of inconsistency.

But the skipper has backed his famed batting line-up despite the prolonged lean patch.

“All of Indian top-order were bowled which means that the deliveries were good. You can’t really question the talent of our top order,” Dhoni said, giving credit to Pakistani pacers in Chennai.

“Honestly, there was plenty for the bowlers in the initial period. They bowled in the right areas and exploited the conditions.”

Promising batsman Ajinkya Rahane has been warming the bench and may get a chance to play tomorrow in case Kohli does not recover from his injury.

Dhoni might have drawn severe criticism in the wake of defeat to England, but the skipper has maintained his ‘ice-cool’ demeanour in leading from the front as he showed in his unbeaten century to take India to 227 from 29/5.

But Dhoni stressed on the need to avoid such a situation in future.

“Actually, you don’t want a situation for your number six or seven (batsman) to score a 100… You want your top order to perform,” he said.

In the bowling department, India would like young Bhuvneshwar Kumar swing the ball with his fine pace, while in spin department Ravichandran Ashwin will be the key as the home side would look to keep the same three-plus-one pace-spin combination, that means local lad Mohammad Shami Ahmed may have to wait for his first ODI cap.

The Pakistani camp, on the other hand, have an all-win record against India from three matches at the Eden Gardens and they would look to wrap up the issue here.

The pace battery of Umar Gul, Junaid Khan and Mohammad Irfan will once again look to bowl full throttle and exploit India’s weakness.

Irfan had pulled a hamstring under muggy conditions of Chennai and it remains to be seen whether the 7-feet 1-inch frame speedster figures in the ranks.

But all eyes would be on left-arm pacer Junaid as he would look to give early breakthroughs with the new ball.

The only concern for skipper Misbah-ul-Haq would be to improve their death bowling performance that had conceded 81 runs in Chennai as India could recover to 227.

Even in Ahmedabad T20I, where their bowlers had conceded 74 runs in last five overs, it had hurt Pakistan’s cause as India levelled the series with a 11-run victory.

“We have to really improve our fielding and bowling in the death overs and Power Play. When two batsmen are set, it is difficult to bowl at them like it was Dhoni (in Chennai),” Misbah said.

Bolstered by the return of experienced pro Younis Khan in the one-dayer, Pakistan doesn’t not have many concern in batting. Their top batsmen of Mohammad Hafeez, Nasir Jamshed Shoaib Malik are also among runs and Pakistan would look to get going.

Youngster Nasir has shown fine qualities of an opening batsmen as he guided Pakistan to a six-wicket win with his 101 not out. He would look to continue from where he’s left and give Pakistan a solid start.

Even as it’s a noon start, dew would be a concern in this part where sun sets early. The pitch will have plenty in it for the batsmen, promised curator Prabir Mukherjee.

“It’s a typical one-day batting friendly wicket. Batting first upon winning the toss would be a wise decision,” he added.

Teams:

India(Probable): Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Suresh Raina, Yuvraj Singh, MS Dhoni (c&wk), Ravichandran Ashwin, Ashok Dinda, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma.

Pakistan(Probable): Nasir Jamshed, Younis Khan, Mohammad Hafeez, Misbah-ul-Haq (c), Kamran Akmal (wk), Azhar Ali, Shoaib Malik, Junaid Khan, Umar Gul, Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Irfan
