Preview : Australia vs Sri Lanka, 4th ODI, Sydney, 2013 #AusvsSL

Preview Australia vs Sri Lanka 4th ODI Sydney 2013Sri Lanka are one win away from wrapping up the series against Australia, but much of the talk in home circles is how an Australian ‘B team’ is in disarray following two sloppy defeats. Michael Clarke’s return for the previous match saw Australia bowled out for 74, with only the last pair Mitchell reaching double figures, and the knives have been drawn by the team’s critics.

The significance of a Sri Lankan victory in the fourth ODI at the Sydney Cricket Ground cannot be understated; should they beat Australia, they will become just the second team ever to win two bilateral series against Australia in Australia. The advantage lies with Sri Lanka. Continue reading below

The visitors’ four-wicket win was set up in the field when, led by five-wicket man Nuwan Kulasekara, they bowled Australia out for an embarrassing total. The batsmen huffed and puffed before victory was achieved, but clearly Sri Lanka are the buoyant side. Their bowling was top class, with Kulasekara moving the ball around superbly and Lasith Malinga keeping a lid on the lower order. Another such showing will boost incredibly Sri Lanka’s chances of a rare overseas win, and will leave Australia smarting.

While Sri Lanka will be looking to turn the final game in Hobart into a dead rubber, Clarke and Co. will be desperately seeking an upheaval and to regain pride. Their batting in Brisbane was woeful, but they do not have many options to ponder. David Warner returned to the side and made 4, David Hussey has 29 and 4 in two matches, George Bailey was out first ball in Brisbane and Phillip Hughes' drastic drop in form has not helped. There are no replacement batsmen in the squad, so the only possible change would be Glenn Maxwell in as the allrounder in place of Moises Henriques.

For Sri Lanka, Ajantha Mendis – two short of the 100-wicket mark in ODIs – could be drafted back in on what is expected to be a harder surface in cooler climates. Shaminda Eranga would thus miss out. Kushal Perera should continue to keep wickets with the management monitoring Dinesh Chandimal’s fitness.

Probable XIs
Australia: 1 Phillip Hughes, 2 David Warner, 3 Michael Clarke (capt), 4 George Bailey, 5 David Hussey, 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Moises Henriques/Glenn Maxwell, 8 Mitchell Johnson, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Clint McKay, 11 Xavier Doherty

Sri Lanka: 1 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 2 Upul Tharanga, 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Lahiru Thirimanne, 5 Angelo Mathews, 6 Kushal Perera (wk), 7 Jeevan Mendis, 8 Thisara Perera, 9 Nuwan Kulasekara, 10 Lasith Malinga, 11 Ajantha Mendis

James Franklin steer New Zealand to thrilling win over South Africa in 1st ODI #SAvsNZ

James Franklin steer New Zealand to thrilling win over South Africa in 1st ODIJames Franklin batted skillfully with the tail to secure a tense one-wicket upset win for New Zealand in the first one-day international against South Africa at Boland Park on Saturday.

Franklin hit 47 not out as the last three New Zealand wickets added 104 runs in a low-scoring match after South Africa had been bowled out for 208.

He put on 35 for the eighth wicket with Nathan McCullum (24) and 47 for the ninth wicket with Kyle Mills.

When Mills was bowled by Ryan McLaren for 26 there were still 22 runs needed but Franklin successfully farmed the strike before hitting McLaren through the covers for the winning boundary.

It was a heartening result for New Zealand at the start of the three-match series after they lost both Test matches by an innings.

McLaren seemed to have won the game for South Africa before Franklin’s final flurry of strokes.

He had shared a crucial 59-run sixth wicket partnership with top scorer Faf du Plessis (57) as South Africa were bowled out for 208 after being sent in to bat.

Then McLaren took four for 46. He bowled BJ Watling for 45, trapped Jimmy Neesham two balls later for nought and then broke two late partnerships when he dismissed Nathan McCullum and Mills.

Left-arm opening bowler Mitchell McClenaghan took four for 20 on debut as New Zealand’s bowlers exerted tight control.

McClenaghan took the key wickets of Graeme Smith and captain AB de Villiers and followed up with two late wickets.

Part-time off-spinner Kane Williamson took four for 22 as the South African batsmen failed to master some steady bowling on a slow pitch.

Du Plessis made a dogged 57 off 71 balls.

He hit only three boundaries in a South African innings which included only 12 fours and four sixes.

One of the fours and three of the sixes were hit by tailender Rory Kleinveldt, who hit his sixes off four balls from Mills in making all 26 runs in a last wicket stand with Lonwabo Tsotsobe.

Kleinveldt followed up with the wickets of New Zealand captain Brendon McCullum and all-rounder Grant Elliott to cap a successful debut in 50-over internationals.

McCullum’s decision to send South Africa in to bat paid dividends when the home side’s three most experienced batsmen, Smith, Hashim Amla and captain de Villiers were dismissed within the first 12 overs.

Franklin: ‘It is a nice way to come back. This was a massive game for us. The next couple of games are going to be hard for us. I was trying to bat as deep as possible. Nathan and Kyle (Mills) showed great character with the bat. There is room for improvement and we will be training hard for the next game at Kimberly. Mills has been a clean striker of the ball and we all know that he is a big hitter.’

James Franklin is the MoM for his 1/44 and his unbeaten 47 which helped NZ win a close match.

Brendon McCullum: ‘It is an incredibly satisfying feeling. We showed a lot of fight today. A couple of experienced people got us over the line. The top order is an area of concern and we have to improve. There are a couple of areas in the field where we have to improve. We will enjoy this victory. McClenaghan has shown that he steams in and looks to take wickets. He was outstanding. We are a more confident ODI unit and we came up against a strong South African team in the Tests. We managed to show character and strength to get over the line. Special mention to James Franklin thanks to his contributions with both bat and ball.’

de Villiers: ‘We were not our best today. We have to play better in the next ODI. It was a good game of cricket but New Zealand came out on top. The top order has to score runs but we put pressure on the lower order. I am feeling much better without the gloves and I had a lot of time to communicate with the guys. Faf du Plessis is in wonderful form. Ryan McLaren has been a very consistent performer but unfortunately, we could not get over the line. I am sorry to have disappointed the fans.’

MS Dhoni equals Sourav Ganguly record of 76 wins in ODI as Indian skipper #IndvsEng

Posted: 19 Jan 2013 05:11 AM PST

MS Dhoni equals Sourav Ganguly record of 76 wins in ODI as Indian skipperIndian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni registered his 76th One-Day International (ODI) win, when India beat England by seven wickets.

Dhoni achieved this feat at Ranchi, his homeground where he played his first international match on Saturday.

The victory puts him in par with former Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly as the second most successful ODI Indian captain after Mohammad Azharuddin.

While Ganguly captained India in 147 ODIs, Dhoni has led the team in only 133 matches so far.

The list of most successful ODI captains in the history of cricket is topped by Ricky Ponting with 165 victories to his credit. He is followed by Allan Border (107), Hansie Cronje (99) and former Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming (98).

Dhoni is currently eighth on the list.

India thrash England by 7 wickets in 3rd ODI, takes 2-1 lead #IndvsEng

India thrash England by 7 wickets in 3rd ODI, takes 2-1 leadIndian bowlers put in an inspired show before Virat Kohli returned to form with a rollicking unbeaten 77 as the hosts spanked England by seven wickets in the third one-dayer to make captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s first match in his home town a memorable one on Saturday.

Scorecard | 3rd ODI Highlights India vs England

India first bundled out the visitors for a paltry 155 in 42.2 overs riding on Ravindra Jadeja’s 3/19 and then chased down the target with 21.5 overs to spare to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match match series.

Nearly 40,000 vociferous spectators at the newly built JSCA Stadium cheered Kohli, who rediscovered his form, and other Indian batsmen as they went about the run chase without much fuss in what turned out to be a rather lop-sided contest.

The script unfolded like a dream for home boy Dhoni as he won the toss and his bowlers responded magnificently by skittling out the visitors for a meagre total though it was not a difficult wicket to bat on.

Only Joe Roots (39) could hang around for long while opener Ian Bell (25) and Tim Bresnan (25) were the other contributors as England lost wickets at regular intervals.

Apart from Jadeja, who again excelled with his left-arm spin, R Ashwin and Ishant Sharma chipped in with two wickets apiece to maintain the pressure on the hapless Englishmen who never recovered from the early jolts.

India also lost opener Ajinkya Rahane (0) early but Gautam Gambhir (33) and Kohli steadied the innings to some extent by putting on 67 runs for the second wicket.

After Gambhir’s dismissal, Kohli and Yuvraj Singh (30) accelerated the pace of scoring with a flurry of explosive shots much to the delight of the home crowd. Yuvraj was, however, out with 12 runs left.

Kohli blasted as many as two sixes and nine fours during his knock which formed the cornerstone of the Indian response.

Dhoni hit the winning runs by pulling Steven Finn to the square-leg boundary to trigger off scenes of celebration in the galleries and the Indian dressing room.

The two teams will now travel to Mohali for the fourth match to be held on January 23.

Big Bash Final Post Match Presentation – Brisbane Heat beat Perth Scorchers

Posted: 19 Jan 2013 04:49 AM PST

Hartley: ‘The last few games we have showed what we can do. Congrats to the boys for putting on such a fine show. We are all excited to be the champions. We had to play a perfect game of cricket to beat the Scorchers and congrats to them as well – they were fantastic throughout the tournament.’

Katich: ‘Firstly commiserations for the boys. We were completely outplayed by the Heat, congrats to them. The crowd have been very supportive and it has been unfortunate that we didn’t put a good show today. Thank you.’

Aaron Finch has been named the player of the tournament for his 332 runs.

Chris Lynn has been named the young gun of the tournament.

Hauritz: ‘Throughout the series I thought we were pretty close up to the mark and Pomersbach played really well in the last couple of games.’

The player of the match for today’s game is Nathan Hauritz.

Kohli: ‘I was batting well for a while. I got out to a few good balls, made a few mistakes earlier. I kept a positive mind frame and I was just following my instinct today. I decided to be positive and one you get a few boundaries, you start to feel good. It was a hard wicket. Finn was getting some seam movement but you just had to apply yourself. The crowd support was brilliant today. It was a great atmosphere in the middle. We put a lot of effort in our fielding and we make it a point to try and save at least 10-15 runs. We take a lot of pride in that.’

Virat Kohli is the Man of the Match for his unbeaten 77.

Dhoni: ‘I think the bowlers did the job of us. Once the seamers were off, the spinners contributed well. Gautam batted really well along with Kohli. Overall a very good performance. We are gelling well as a team. Ashwin is experienced, Ishant has come back in. Bhuvi and Shami have just come in. It would give them a lot of confidence. I was happy to contribute, Yuvi would hit me for saying that. The people were fabulous. The facilities were excellent. The crowd was superb everywhere. It was just the perfect script. We’re not sure what will happen in Dharamshala. We need to do well in the next game.’

Cook: ’150 was nowhere near enough on that track. Credit to India. They put a lot of pressure on us. We did not get out to many attacking shots. That’s a bit of a concern. We’ve played well below potential in the last two games. We needed a freak result to win this one after getting just 155. We’re still in the series. We have to look deep and produce a better result at Mohali.’

3rd ODI : India wins toss, opts to field vs England – Ranchi 2013 #IndvsEng

Toss: India have won the toss and elected to field

MS Dhoni: We’ll bowl first. We saw fair amount of dew in the last two days, which may play a role. Out of the 40,000 people here, I guess I would have played cricket with 15,000 people. I had a word with the president a couple of years ago, he always wanted to build a world class stadium. We batted well in the previous game, it was a perfect game for our bowlers. They got regular wickets. There was fair amount of turn too. We are going with the same side.

Cook: ‘We would have bowled first, but it looks like a good batting wicket. We batted first and won the game in the 1st ODI. Hope we take some confidence out of that. Bresnan comes in for Woakes, who unfortunately misses out. The facilities here are pretty good.’

Pitch report: ‘It’s flat and there is some grass that will hold the pitch together. It should stay a great batting pitch for both teams. The dew could play a factor in the 2nd innings,’ says Ravi Shastri.

Teams:
India (Playing XI): Ajinkya Rahane, Gautam Gambhir, Virat Kohli, Yuvraj Singh, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni(w/c), Ravindra Jadeja, Ravichandran Ashwin, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ashok Dinda, Shami Ahmed

Big Bash League Final Live Streams - Perth Scorchers vs Brisbane Heat

Perth Scorchers will be in the finals for the second straight time when they play against Brisbane Heat. Left-handed opener Shaun Marsh continued his good form with a 40-ball 68 against the Stars, leading all run-scorers this season with 396 at an average of 66. But in a huge blow, the hosts will be without South African opener Herschelle Gibbs, who injured his left hamstring in the win. Hussey could be promoted to open with the likes of Tom Triffitt potentially returning for the Scorchers, who lost to the Sydney Sixers in the final last season. While their bowlers struggled against the Stars, Perth will be confident Alfonso Thomas and Brad Hogg can do the job.

The Heat have benefitted from a late-season flurry of runs from Luke Pomersbach, who has smashed scores of 82 and 112 not out in his past two innings. Brisbane will have their leading wicket-taker from this season, paceman Ben Cutting, available after he was not required by Australia in their one-day international against Sri Lanka on Friday. While Pomersbach starred with the bat in their 15-run win over the Melbourne Renegades, Cutting and Alister McDermott impressed with the ball.
