Preview : Australia vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20, Sydney 2013 #AusvsSL

Preview Australia vs Sri Lanka, 1st T20, Sydney 2013After three Test defeats in which they were pushed nearly to the ground, followed by a tied ODI contest in which they were robbed of a great chance of a series win due to an abandonment, two Twenty20 internationals could be seen as a welcome release for some of the Sri Lankan players.

The one-day series was shared after Australia beat Sri Lanka by 32 runs on Tuesday, leaving this two-match contest as Sri Lanka's last shot at taking home some memorable silverware. It has been a long and difficult tour for them, with defeats in all three Tests and injuries to key players followed by a leveled 50-overs leg. But in Twenty20 the Sri Lankans can claim the upper hand over Australia on the basis of looking a better team in the format. They are not ranked No. 1 without reason. Continue reading below

Sri Lanka were ICC World Twenty20 finalists at home in September and have beaten Australia in their last three meetings in the format. The last time these two teams met, Sri Lanka came out with an eight-run win at Pallekele in 2011 to claim the series 2-0. On that occasion Australia were flummoxed by Ajantha Mendis's magical spell of 6 for 16, then the best figures in T20I history. Considering Australia's struggles against Sri Lanka's bowlers in the ODI series, the captain George Bailey will hope history doesn't repeat itself.

Sri Lanka have largely the same Twenty20 squad as the one-dayers, though the captaincy will shift from Mahela Jayawardene to Angelo Mathews. Jayawardene and Tillakaratne Dilshan are looking the likely openers, followed by wicketkeeper Dinesh Chandimal, Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne and the allrounders Jeevan Mendis and Thisara Perera. Mathews is likely to share the medium-pace responsibilities with Nuwan Kulasekara – Man of the Series in the ODIs – and Lasith Malinga. Ajantha Mendis will lead the spin bowling, while offspinner Akila Dananjaya, who claimed five wickets in three games at the World Twenty20, should get his fourth cap.

Australia's Twenty20 squad looks distinctly different from the one-day unit, with only Bailey, David Warner and Matthew Wade the batsman whom Sri Lanka encountered recently. Aaron Finch, Player of the Series in this season's Big Bash League (BBL), returns to partner Warner; Shaun Marsh has been recalled after topping the BBL run charts with 412 at 58.85; and Adam Voges, Ben Laughlin and James Faulkner have also rewarded for their domestic efforts. Mitchell Starc and Ben Cutting – who made his ODI debut against Sri Lanka – will lead the bowling with 22-year-old Faulkner hoping to impress at the international level.

Victory at the SCG will also ensure Sri Lanka retains its No. 1 ranking in the ICC Twenty20 international rankings. If Australia sweep the series, Sri Lanka will fall to fourth place and West Indies will rise to the top spot.

Probable XIs
Australia: 1 Aaron Finch, 2 David Warner, 3 Shaun Marsh, 4 Adam Voges, 5 George Bailey (capt), 6 Matthew Wade (wk), 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Ben Cutting, 9 Mitchell Starc, 10 Xavier Doherty, 11 James Faulkner

English media lashes out at Indian umpires for India-England series #IndvsEng

English media lashes out at Indian umpires for India-England seriesIndian umpires came in for criticism for their poor officiating in the ongoing five-match One-Day International (ODI) series against England.

The Indian umpires, though seen as not biased, do lack cricketing experience, not having played at first-class level.

Noted British columnist Scyld Berry blasted the Indian umpires on Friday, calling their performance as “abysmal.”

“At one end, the 60 year-old Australian, Steve Davis, for whom it looks like a series too far. At the other, three different Indian umpires whose standard has been – well, abysmal,” he wrote in his column in the Telegraph.

“I wouldn’t accuse any of the three Indian umpires in this series of any bias. In this current ODI series, the three Indian umpires have simply failed to demonstrate the necessary feel for the game – not surprisingly, because none has played first-class cricket.”

Berry also took a dig at the fact that no Indian umpire after Srinivas Venkataraghavan had been part of the the ICC elite panel.

“It is harsh but fair to say the only Indian umpire of international standard in the last generation has been Venkataraghavan,” he wrote.

“But since Venkat retired in 2004, there hasn’t been one Indian umpire on the ICC elite panel, which reflects badly on the Indian board. A billion people, and a budget of billions, but not one umpire of international standard.”

Teams:
South Africa (Playing XI): Quinton de Kock(w), Graeme Smith, Colin Ingram, Farhaan Behardien, Faf du Plessis(c), David Miller, Ryan McLaren, Rory Kleinveldt, Dale Steyn, Aaron Phangiso, Lonwabo Tsotsobe

England announce squad for New Zealand series, Woakes replaces injured Bresnan #EngvsNZ

England announce squad for New Zealand series, Woakes replaces injured BresnanEngland’s Tim Bresnan has been ruled out of the tour of New Zealand with an elbow injury while wicketkeeper Craig Kieswetter was dropped from the One-Day International (ODI) squad.

National selector Geoff Miller announced Thursday a 15-man squad for the three Test series, with uncapped Warwickshire seamer Chris Woakes replacing Bresnan, who has been struggling with a right elbow problem for over a year.

Miller hopes the Yorkshireman will be fit in time for a packed schedule on home soil later in the year that sees England staging a return series against New Zealand, the Champions Trophy and an Ashes contest with Australia.

Kieswetter who played in 34 successive One-Day Internationals until England’s defeat by India in Mohali on Wednesday, was included in the original ODI squad for New Zealand.

But a run of low scores, as well as some indifferent performances with the gloves, have seen the Somerset man leapfrogged by county colleague Jos Buttler and Yorkshire’s Jonathan Bairstow in the revised squad announced Thursday.

England have also added two players to their 50-over party in top-order batsman Joe Root and seamer James Harris.

Former England off-spinner Miller, explaining Bresnan’s absence, said: “It’s not necessarily an operation at this stage and we feel he’ll be absolutely fine; our medical staff say he’ll be fine for the [English] summer.

Turning to Woakes, a near like-for-like replacement for Bresnan in that he too is a useful lower-order batsman, Miller, in an England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) statement, said: “He is coming in for all parts of the New Zealand tour because he’s shown with the [second-string England] Lions what he is capable of.”

As for Kieswetter, Miller said he’d failed to make the most of his chances.

“Craig has had an extended opportunity in ODI and T20 cricket and while he has shown evidence of delivering performances on the international stage, we don’t feel these have been consistent enough.

“We discussed it with him and felt the best way forward was for him to go back to Somerset, work on his game and get a lot of runs early in the season.”

Root has made his debut in all three international formats in India, with the Yorkshireman helping Alastair Cook’s men clinch a 2-1 series win in the drawn fourth Test in Nagpur last month.

“He’s already shown us what he can do and he’s shown he is very, very easy in the international arena,” Miller said.

“We’re excited about him.”

Spinner Samit Patel and middle-order batsman Eoin Morgan were both dropped from the Test squad.

England last played a Test series in New Zealand in 2008, winning the three-match contest 2-1.

A Twenty20 side led by Stuart Broad start a three-match series in Auckland on February 9, with the first ODI in Hamilton on Feb 17.

The first of three Tests is due to start in Dunedin on March 6.

Australia announce squad for West Indies series in Australia #AusvsWI

Posted: 24 Jan 2013 10:32 PM PST

Australia announce squad for West Indies series in AustraliaAustralia brought batsman Aaron Finch back into the one-day squad unveiled on Friday for the first two internationals against the West Indies next month.

David Hussey made way for Finch, paying the price for what the selectors said were “concerns” with the batting performance in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.

Australia levelled the series 2-2 in Hobart on Wednesday but struggled against Sri Lanka’s swing bowlers and looked to have been saved by the rain in Sydney last Sunday.

“A top four of (David) Warner, Finch, (Phillip) Hughes and (Michael) Clarke has good balance and the team looks forward to getting better starts than has been the case recently,” said national selector John Inverarity.

“David Hussey has been dropped from the squad as the NSP (National Selection Panel) keeps a constant eye on the future.”

Inverarity said skipper Clarke was making steady progress with the ankle he twisted last Tuesday in training and should be fit to play the opening game of the series of five on February 1 at the WACA.
Perth also hosts the second game two days later.

“James Pattinson came under consideration for this squad, but, at the time of the selection meeting, he had not bowled a ball in interstate or international cricket since 24 November,” Inverarity said. “It is anticipated that James will go to Perth to practise with the squad.”

The West Indies also take on Australia at Canberra on February 6, at Melbourne two days later and Brisbane on February 13.

Squad:

Australia: Michael Clarke (c), George Bailey, Ben Cutting, Xavier Doherty, Aaron Finch, Moises Henriques, Phillip Hughes, Mitchell Johnson, Glenn Maxwell, Clint McKay, Mitchell Starc, Matthew Wade, David Warner.
